My account reports up for renewal 10/30.

I wonder if they'll bump that forward a little bit for the pre-order. Hrmmm.

Still, I can't decide if any rumor I've read is enticing more than a purely curious nerd factor. Bigger (-), more cpu/gpu power (meh), bigger screen (-), LTE (meh), 5ghz wifi (+), better camera (+), I could use more storage 32GB (+)... sigh...

i'm the same way. bought 4S the first day. i'm eligible 5/2013. $449 if i want early upgrade.

funny thing is that i looked at the galaxy note and Galaxy S3 and i can only buy those for full price

The early upgrade only applies to the iPhone if I recall correctly.

Mine says the same thing right now - I'm going to check again after the phone is launched. If it is still the same, first few months sales for the 5 will be horrible.

Why? Because YOUR account isn't eligible for a full upgrade at launch? I don't understand your logic. Millions upon millions of 4 and 3GS customers are right this moment eligible for a full upgrade not to mention other non-iPhone users who are either eligible or not on contract. Not everyone upgrades every year. In fact, most people don't.

This is what mine says

But the lady at the corp store....says wait till the new one comes out as they haven't gotten official word.

If this won't work, then I'll just open another line and get a Galaxy Note 2.

what's weird is in early 2011 i went from a 3GS to HTC Inspire. Cheapo phone but OK. i was eligible to upgrade to the 4S when it came out that fall with a full discount

they probably don't have the subsidy contract ironed out with apple yet

Do i need to keep my iphone 4 to be a 'new' eligiblity or can I try Android OS while I wait for the iPhone 5 to come out?

Changing your phone HAS affected some people's upgrade dates in the past. I can't see if it will or won't today, but if I were you I'd be very careful.

Edit: This might be a good time to start directing people to the Upgrade Guide located at the top of the forum. It may be a bit dated and it's AT&T sepecfic, but still a lot of good information

Same here. I checked *639# today, in anticipation of the 5 coming out, and was disappointed to see 5/15/13 as my eligible upgrade date. I called AT&T, and she confirmed it, but couldn't explain why. She said could be due to a late payment, which I was a few days once, due to oversight. Glad I found this forum confirming it to be a policy change. Very disappointed to say the least. Holding out a sliver of hope that they move it up after the 5 is announced, but not holding my breath. Maybe I can talk my wife into letting me use her eligibility, an give her my 64GB 4S. She won't take advantage of the benefit of having a 5. :)

Can a cross upgrade be done with a pre-order? Do I have to set it up with AT&T ahead of time? Will the new iPhone (5) have a yet smaller sim, so wouldn't swapping sims be an issue without doing a cross upgrade?

Sorry for just getting back to you, no the cross upgrade can only be done in a cor retail store.

NO, ATT just favors showing only "iPhone" early eligibility.

In reality, you can use the "early $250 plus subsidized pricing" plus $35 activation fee on ANY ATT phone after 6 months from the time of your last upgrade.

You just need to call into ATT to do it.

And here's the "real secret". If you call and complain, they may give you a sweet deal for an "early upgrade" for any phone EXCEPT the iPhone.

Let's just say my friend (who also got a iPhone 4S on launch day last year). ATT gave him a Samsung Galaxy S3 essentially for "free". They charged him the $250 early upgrade price plus activation fee.

Not bad paying $250 for an Galaxy S3 when ATT's full subsidy pricing is $199.

But ATT will not give you a deal for an iPhone. Any phone in their lineup including high end phones like the S3, ATT may cut you a good deal.

i have my eyes on a Galaxy note refurb. $50 from AT&T now but i also want to keep my iphone 4S as well.

i've been eligible for an upgrade since the iphone 4s came out. But I got my 4s for free because the at&t store forgot to charge me.

They even did a "sale audit" of some sort. They called me back and said, hey, when you came in for your iphone, did you pay for it?" I said, yes i did!

When in all actuality, I walked out of that store without paying. The guy was new, so I think he just set up the phone and forgot to charge me for it. hahaha

So you just admitted to lying/cheating (making you a thief) and you think it's funny?

When the 4S came out I was pissed I couldn't upgrade cheaply. I simply asked the ATT manager how much my early termination would be and saw it was cheaper than ATT. I told him I could take both my lines to verizon and get 2 new phones there cheaper. He gave me low price, just this one time....

I bought the 4s last year on the release date. On August 13th, I texted *639# and got this reply:

A full discount on a standard device or iPhone upgrade is not available at this time but you may qualify on 05/08/2013. We can offer you a discounted iPhone upgrade at 2-yr commitment pricing + $250 along with a new 2-yr commitment and an $36 upgrade fee.

Today, this is what I got:

Due to past due balance, and other reasons, an upgrade is not available. Payment will make full retail pricing available for all handsets except iPhone. After payment, we can offer you an early iPhone upgrade with a new 2-yr commitment and an $36 upgrade fee at a participating iPhone sales location. Additional discounts for all other handsets may be available on 05/08/2013. Use *PAY to check your balance and pay your bill from your phone.

So to all those people saying it's going to be 20 months: you're wrong.

I bought mine on launch day last year and when I checked, I have to pay full price. Doesn't show me anything with the $250 early upgrade.

i have a question for those looking to trade in their 4S and upgrade. I like the most of you am eligible in May '13. If i choose to sell my 4S and purchase the phone unlocked via apple, i will be spending 700 with tax and getting $350 for my 4S. That means i am spending $350 to upgrade but i won't be adding to my contract correct? Does this not seem more plausible for most, though there is more up front cost, or am i missing something? Thanks

They are referring to a full upgrade.. After 6 motnhs you can get an early upgrade as stated for the price of phone and an upgrade cost

199.99 plus 250.00

In your case that you posted you have an entirely different message do to the fact you have a blemish on your billing. So basically it still giving you the same message in different context.

We've gone over this before. "Early iPhone upgrade" is $250 on top of the $199/299/399 subsidized price.

Correct. You are not upping your contract with the full price.

Everyone --- You can always "upgrade" whenever you want. You just have to be willing to pay for what the phone is WORTH...not what the carriers have discounted it down to. I am not eligible for a full upgrade because I chose to get the 4S...but I still will be getting the 5 not matter what (while selling my 4S to recoup some of the cost).

i might just sell my 4s and buy the phone unlocked from apple rather than commit two more years with att. after May i might joint boost mobile.
