Well by reading a few stories (engadget, gizmodo) it looks as if the 2.0 software is already hacked, not even jailbroken but properly hacked firmware so that wont be a problem. As far as signing new contracts in store, yes i think you will have to. Apple know its fruitless to try and stop it being hacked so their only way to keep hold of it is via making sure people sign their contracts with the mobile operator.

What an absolute shame. I hear that there are also rumors that they may not go through with forcing activation in store (hassling you for it, but not forcing you), but when you put it that way, it does sound like they would do anything to stop hacking.

Damn it Apple..

I wonder if it's an "international" shortage as mentioned in the article, which I would take to mean that ample supply exists in the US.

Perhaps it's going to be a worldwide shortage.

This is untrue. There was that import report that claimed Apple was stockpiling the iPhone since March, but that was clearly false.

Since they carry the last beta release of the firmware, the iPhone 3G may have only been in production since somewhere after June 9th (7th beta released) and around June 26 (8th beta released).

arn

That's just the firmware. They could have (and should have) been making the hardware a while. Just a matter of installing the final firmware and boxing 'em up.

I will agree the concept of stockpiling fully boxed units in the US since March is baloney. Knowing Apple they've waited until the last minute to air freight them from China (I can't tell you the number of times I've ordered something overnight from Apple, and it was sent overnight from China to the US East Coast. What bizarre inventory management.).

NZ Petition wrong link

Wrong petition URL in the main post, the link given is for the iPhone Prepay petition.

The following is the one about the plans, which make them the most expensive plans in the world.

http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/iphone_rip_off_New_Zealand/index.html

A fair bit of colourful language in with the signatures:

And here is a youtube video of vodafone NZ being interviewed about the plans - slippery little bugger.

Oh there is definitely ample supply in the states! Apple will be making sure on there opening day(s) everyone gets one, how bad would that look if they didnt. Plus Apple have said US stores will be getting the stock replenished daily, but to do this i think stock has been lessened for the rest of the world.

but...but... You US guys already have an iPhone! not fair!

Push not working yet

Push doesn't seem to be working for me; tested with email, contacts, and calendars on a .Mac/.Me account. Looks right on the iPhone with final 2.0, shows the MobileMe name in the settings area etc but no data arrives. Perhaps they had it on earlier for a short test.

Also - when I turned on the options to sync my address book and contacts with MobileMe, it (with proper warning) deleted that info from my iPhone. So all was deleted, and no incoming data, all was left blank.

I disabled the .Me sync features and did a USB sync, got the data back fine.

Hi everyone, I'm sorry if this has been covered before, but no matter the amount of articles I read I can't get a clear answer:

You will be required to have all this documentation with you in order to buy an iPhone 3G, but will you be forced to sign a contract with AT&T at the store instead of just going home and doing it via iTunes at home?

I would like to jailbreak the iPhone to use with t-mobile so this is very important for me. Thanks in advance

You're better off getting an iPhone 1.0 off ebay for cheap and updating it to the 2.0 software, then SIM-unlocking it. Since T-Mobile's 3G network hasn't arrived yet, the 2.0 device doesn't offer as much of an advantage for you.

I'm so surprised by this. I have it, and it lags on me all the time.

That's a good point; i've got Beta 8 too and was still under the impression it was a BETA; it certainly feels like a BETA build, more stable than 7, but still has performance issues if you ask me....

Perhaps the full OS 2 isn't ready yet and they'll upgrade them at the stores or it'll upgrade itself when you get home...

I'd be amazed (and pretty dissapointed) if BETA 8 turns out to be the full production version!

Push email is working, calendars and contacts not yet. I can confirm the push email works though.

Ok, so im going to get a 1st gen, have 2.0 and i've ordered mobileme, do we think that by friday push email, calenders etc, will be up and running?

Also is mobileme a download purchase or via a CD/DVD in a box?

Since MobileMe is going live tonight, I'm assuming the push calendars and contacts should be working by tomorrow morning.

As for purchase, you can pay online or you can buy a box in the store, but all the box has is a piece of paper with your registration code. There's no CD/DVD. At least if it's the same as dotMac anyway. There's no extra software. The 2.0 firmware has all the capabilities built-in. I'm guessing we might see Mail.app, Address Book, and iCal updates for OS X tonight or tomorrow to support the features? Or maybe the dotMac preference pane will be updated to a MobileMe one and will "fix" the apps as needed. I have no idea how that will all work, guess I'll find out tomorrow morning when I wake up :)

Ah, Lovely.

I purchased last night via the apple store site, and at that point it was down as a Pre Order for delivery in July. Im i right in thinking i'll get a link/and or a OS update and an email with my registration code?

Only the push mail seems to be working atm

Just rang my local O2 store to ask about Friday;

Q) Have you you got any iphones?
A: Not yet, we're expecting them to be delivered tomorrow.

Q) Any 16GB phones?
A: No. We're only getting 8GB ones for Friday, i don't know when we're getting the 16GB model.

Q) What time are you open?
A: 8.02pm

Q) I'm an existing iPhone customer, can you upgrade me to iphone 3g?
A: We should be able to upgrade you in-store on friday without any problems.

Good and bad news there as i was hoping to get a 16GB model!! :(
I do live in a fairly small city in the UK (a large town really), so perhaps it's only the big O2 stores in the big cities that will have the 16GB models...

Looks like if i want 16GB i'll have to be content with the app store and Super Monkey Ball on my gen 1 for a while ;)

As a result, the only group of individuals who need to specifically go to the AT&T stores are business/corporate customers.

The above statement is not entirely true.

If you have a non-iPhone Go Phone and want to port your Go Phone number to a new iPhone 3G plan, you can only do this in an ATT corporate store.

There are probably very few people in this boat, but I thought I'd mention it since this is my situation.

Not to get off topic or anything but does anyone know what type of
iphone 3G case selection there will be at the AT&T and :apple: stores? I'm planning on going to an AT&T store Friday morning just to avoid the crowds at the :apple: store to buy my iphone. I want to get a case so that my iphone is protected on day one but haven't heard anything about what cases if any will be available on launch day at the AT&T stores. By the look of that backing on the iphone 3g, a case will be needed to avoid those little scratches. Links to product pages or any insight would be helpful.

I bet a debit card would work too. Unless you are dating another gadget geek I doubt going to the Apple store to buy yourself an iPhone will be very romantic (for the other person, anyway).

Anyways, I wonder if a software update will be necessary for Push to work with Mac OS X (I think it will be...) and when will we be able to upgrade our iPod Touches to the new firmware...

Of course it would its the exact same processing company. Besides, no one in their right mind is even using a credit card, but rather a card connected to actual cash.

"Major credit cards only" ended in like 1992, wth have you been?

Yes, grayg, I have an iPhone GoPhone, and from what it sounded like when I talked with AT&T and did the credit check, they said I would probably have to visit an AT&T store instead of Apple on Friday. Sad, this would have been my first product launch that I was planning on attending.

the hype machine is in overdrive

what better way to hype a product than to make it appear to be reallllllllllly difficult to get. well done apple marketing boneheads, once again you have showed how to properly brainwash consumers!

.....what if.......apple launched a new product.....and nobody cared......?

Was that a London store or somewhere outside London? I'm worried now that all the stores are only going to get 8GB models. Did they say it was only that store or potentially all stores? I simply don't believe it can be true, based on the fact that the O2 online store did have the 16GB models.

I guess we will find out tomorrow when the O2 website gets updated with 'more information'.
