Just rang my local O2 store to ask about Friday;

Q) Have you you got any iphones?
A: Not yet, we're expecting them to be delivered tomorrow.

Q) Any 16GB phones?
A: No. We're only getting 8GB ones for Friday, i don't know when we're getting the 16GB model.

Q) What time are you open?
A: 8.02pm

Q) I'm an existing iPhone customer, can you upgrade me to iphone 3g?
A: We should be able to upgrade you in-store on friday without any problems.

Good and bad news there as i was hoping to get a 16GB model!! :(
I do live in a fairly small city in the UK (a large town really), so perhaps it's only the big O2 stores in the big cities that will have the 16GB models...

So if everyone that wants a 16 gb version holds out for a "few weeks" as O2 puts it, its going to be an embarrassing "launch day" or O2 with lots of 8gb versions sitting in the stores!

Here's the interesting part of it all is to see how people react next time. In 1 year, if Apple releases a new iPhone, everyone with an iPhone 3G will still be under contract.

In order to upgrade to a 2009 iPhone, you won't be eligible for subsidized pricing. So you would have to pay the early termination fee (~$115 since AT&T now prorates it) to get out of your contract.

arn

I don't know that that would be the case, Arn. Everyone with an EDGE iPhone is currently still under contract, and they're letting us get the subsidized price on iPhone 3G anyway. No reason to assume that they wouldn't do that again.

(Although to be fair, it's also way too early to assume that they would, too. It is AT&T, afterall. We'll just have to wait and see)

Because with the current phone the cost was not subsidized. It will be with the 3G. They will be less inclined next time around.

This might be a bit of a guestimation..

Any O2 iPhone users in the UK who tried to buy an iPhone the other day when O2 briefly opened their website ordering system? I tried all morning to do this, and several times got to the page where I enter my details, my phone choice and my credit card details. I never ever had a useful ersponse back from submitting this form however.

An hour ago I recieved a call from a courier (unfortunately I didn't note which one) - stating they had a premium insured item to be delivered to me at my work address tomorrow (10 July) between 9 and 12. They wanted to be sure I'd be around, as they needed my signature - the mail room security dude's would not be sufficient.

I'm intrigued - as I'm not expecting a parcel - and only ever used my work address for one item shipped before.

I'm wondering if my order did make it through.... anybody else in this situation? If there were someone else who had attempted to buy an iPhone 3G AND recieved a courier call for something unexpected... I'd be interested to know as it'd be a confirmation of my suspicions.

All too good to be true - albeit weird. I'm confident it's going to be raining on Friday - I don't want to have to stand around in this gorgeous summer drizzle.

True. I still think that wouldn't be the case though. They'll be better off letting people upgrade early than facing the wrath of however many million Apple fanatics by forcing them to pay contract termination fees to get the new phone at a discounted price.

I ordered mine from Carphone Warehouse, didn't get any calls today. I did get DHL at my door at lunch time though, got me all excited thinking it had come early - turned out it was a parcel for next door :(.

Quick question.

I'm 17 and I'm on a family plan with 3 other people (who are in my family ) and I was wondering if I could go to the Apple store myself and by the new iPhone without having to take my dad (primary account holder). Does anyone have a clue? I know that I read somewhere that AT&T said that if an iPhone is going to be purchased for a family plan, the person getting the phone must be in line.

I really want to go by myself (since I hope to make a date out of it with a special someone ;))

You need to be an authorized user on the account because in order to buy the iphone you need to sign up for the data plan which is a change to the account agreement. Either have dad put you on the account as an authorized user or bring him along.

Edit: Someone else correctly pointed out that you might have issues from being under 18. Why don't you just call the AT&T store and ask them? They should be able to tell you what you'll be allowed to do so there won't be any surprises.

Hmm okay. I didn't order through CPW because they had a field for me to type a PAC code in. Given I didn't have a PAC code and O2 weren't requiring one, I stuck with them. Oh well.

I have such a bad feeling that they will be sold out before I get to the store at 6:00pm!

Well the good news is that Apple is saying that they will be getting in new shipments DAILY. So if you don't get one Friday, go out and get drunk to drown the sorrow and get to the store first thing Saturday (or after they receive that day's shipment).

It is unfortunate that those New Zealanders are getting a raw deal from their com providers. There will be many unhappy hobbits and the prices may prevent ents from purchasing the phone.

As for mexico... screw mexico... maybe if everything wasn't so screwed up and their populous did something about it, things wouldn't be so expensive and the wealth wouldn't belong to 1% of the population.

Does anybody know if the .me account is just set up as IMAP exactly like the .Mac account?

Is any other country getting a raw deal besides Mexico and New Zealand? For some reason I thought I remember reading that Canada was getting hosed too. That is truly unfortunate. Thats like giving half the U.S. a different plan because health care is free.

Hi everyone, I'm sorry if this has been covered before, but no matter the amount of articles I read I can't get a clear answer:

You will be required to have all this documentation with you in order to buy an iPhone 3G, but will you be forced to sign a contract with AT&T at the store instead of just going home and doing it via iTunes at home?

I would like to jailbreak the iPhone to use with t-mobile so this is very important for me. Thanks in advance

Yes you will be required to sign a contract before you leave the store with your iphone. If you want to use this on t-mobile, be prepared to pay the ETF when you break your contract with AT&T.

What would be funny , is that all these people waiting trying to get they eager hands on the iPhone 3G and in a few months Steve Jobs will announce a price drop of $50 USD.

Which will follow wit flame posts here saying I waited 3+ hours to purchase an iPhone 3G for $XX.xx and now late adopters are purchasing with without a wait and cheaper.

I beg to ask, do people ever learn from past experiences.

There is a change that there will be price drop, however Steve Jobs stressed that the price needs to be cheaper as it was the No.1 factor mass adoption and when he mentioned the new prices it seemed he was testing the water to see what the market is willing to pay.

I believe there will be another price drop in the next year or less. :)

I fear the point is that most of us don't care. I fully expect a 32gb version in 6 months too. I'll buy it too.

no new canadian news? :(

Being Canadian, I do not feel the iPhone 3G is worth the lowered price and the price plan that Rogers/Fido i s requesting for new and supplementary plans, plus a 3 year contract. ROTFLMAO in another year or so the iPhone v3/rev 3 will be introduced with a possible lower price point. So all this fuss is just useless right now for a smartphone that cannot cut/copy/paste and other hardware related shortcomings.

No thanks Rogers/Fido I believe I will hold on to my money and might decide to purchase an iPod Touch since I want WAP Enterprise that will be in the iPhone OS v2. And since I live in the DT area I have no second thoughts about the matter. :)

Yea I have a feeling I would also...its the price you pay to have something when it first comes out. But, otherwise you can keep waiting and waiting and never get anything because there's always something better right around the corner.

I'm sure that the price will drop/there'll be a new version/they'll add a personal massage feature within the next year or so as well. You're absolutely right.

What I don't get though, is why so many people feel entitled to whatever is new because they waited in line a few months earlier. If you buy it now, you run the risk of something better/faster/cheaper coming out as early as the next day. Welcome to technology. I don't understand why so many people get all bent out of shape when it happens. You have to weigh your personal utility for the thing. Do you want it right now bad enough to risk it being outdated soon? Buy it. Are you on the fence about it? Wait. Personally, I believe that if I always wait for the next version, I'll never buy anything because there will ALWAYS be a next version EVENTUALLY. If I buy it immediately and get bit in the butt by a rapid update/price drop as a result, well, at least I had it before all of my friends did. That's why I wasn't at all upset about the price drop. It's gonna happen. Sometimes it works out for you, sometimes it doesn't, but that's the risk you take when you buy on Launch Day.

That's a long way of saying that I won't be complaining if a new one is released for Christmas :D

Seemed that many many customer cared when the price drop was implemented the first time around. There were stories here about people jumping through hoops to get the money they felt :apple: owed them even though they were very willing to pay the asking price initially.

Rather than have a 32GB model I would appreciate a SDHC micro slot so I can expand at will rather than being locked-in to internal memory. However I believe the only reason :apple: has stayed from removable media for its iPhone and iPod line is due to DRM since any restriction that would be implemented on removable media would be cracked and you would have people swapping media as if it was the late 80's early 90's with VHS, Cassette Tapes and the rest. :p:)

Weird. It seems as though they are out to spite us!:eek:

I filled in that form to no avail the other day but I'm not sure it actually sent properly and I've heard absolutely nothing, nor anything on my o2. I pretty much figure I was unlucky, and am going for the early morning get-up on Friday. I guess we all might no something tomorrow (well, I hope at least O2 will...)
