What I find strange about my phone 4.3 phone as a hotspot, you can't change the name... it's creates a hotspot called iPhone.... you can't change it. So what happens if there are 2 people with it turned on in the same room?
It's named the same as your phone. Mine isn't "iPhone" as I've named it something else. But you're correct that you can't change it on the phone itself. You'd have to do it in iTunes.

I think the mifi version available for 20.00 will blow away any ATT offering, without forcing people to loose the unlimited data.

That is one slick program.;)

The latest MyWi works very, very well. If you don't have WiFi turned on already, then there's a hiccup while it "cleans up MyWi" [sic] to enable Wifi, and then you have to enable it again.

And of course the USB and Bluetooth operability on a jailbroken iPad or iPhone isn't going work perfectly if you're trying to hook up to a Mac.

But the WiFi capability more than makes up for that. I wish that Bluetooth worked easily, because of the low battery consumption, but most of us are going to know to be connected to a power supply when we're using MyWi.

If you have an iPad and an iPhone, and you're paying for data on both of them, there's a new addition to Cydia called MyWi On Demand. It would effectively allow you to drop the data plan on one device or the other, because you'd be able to seamlessly tether to the other device, automatically and quickly.

I'd consider hotspot if AT&T gave it to me as incentive to downgrade from my legacy 'unlimited'.
While I don't come close to 2G per month, it's going to take something above and beyond from AT&T to get me to give it up.

Well, they give you 4 GB of data now instead of 2 when you have the tethering plan.

True, but an extra $20-$30 (forgot which) a month is not an incentive. Honestly, I think they over price it to keep people from using it and taking down the network.

$20. It's a good deal for me because I had a Mifi and an iPhone before. To pay for only one data plan is nice.

I had to travel this weekend, and the room had an Ethernet only connection. I have handylight app on iPhone, but that won't work for iPad, so I downloaded the trial of mifi.

I can't believe how seamless and quick it works. Definitely going to buy this for just these occasions. On my drive home, the wife can tether to my iPhone as it also is using my navigon and rocking the iPod through the stereo.

I am not big on data tethering daily, however this makes so much sense for occasional uses when needed. I must say, I have not tried the Bluetooth functionality on it so I cannot comment, but the wifi has been absolutely perfect.

This is exactly what I'll be using tethering for. The occasional use and so that my wife can get data every once in a while when away from home and wifi. Hardly worth $20/month for the tethering plan for me. I'll be going the tetherme route with personal hotspot once iOS 4.3 drops and is jailbreakable.

It may be mentioned in this thread already, but if you do add tethering... for grandfathered unlimited data plans that automatically makes you switch to a tiered plan, correct?

What are you guys smoking? 25GB a week isn't very hard to do. Don't you have blu-ray players with HULUPlus or Netflix? I have three Netflix enabled devices in my house not counting my iPhone, the Mac pro, or the other two laptops. A show or movie every night easily pushes the 30GB alone, and that doesn't include surfing YouTube or ESPN3 or ftping huge video files up and down to the web for my biz. And now we're talking all about Apples cloud computing and backups and he servers. 25GB Could easily be every day in that environment.

you are very right. i didnt get netflix until just a few weeks ago but man it can rack up data. we are now in an age where 10-20 gb of data on a device is pretty common and also that 1 tb of storage (3 years ago it was almost non existent) is now not enough when we are talking about streaming, blu-ray and cloud storage. i have the unlimited plan but im happy added an extra 2 gb to the tethering plan. i will not be switching because i will not pay an extra 20 a month but hopefully when their 4g networks (hspa+ and lte) are complete by 2013 they will think about these data plans and hopefully bring back a true unlimited. also thats another 2 years away and who knows what we will have by then.

EDIT:i should post this before i get flamed because people are so uneasy when it comes to data. i use between 700 mb and 1 gb a month. at college we have to sign in with our campus account to use the wifi. most of the time it will take longer to sign in than what i want to do on my iphone. i either check macrumors :) check for app updates, look at appshopper and maybe check the weather. i dont bother signing in because im on my phone for about a minute or two so i use 3G. when im in my room i use my own router so i dont have to sign in so im always on wifi.

however i was saying in my post that times are changing quick and soon these 200 mb plans will not cut it. with new generations coming into a technologically advanced world they will be using a lot of data. ive seen 10 year olds with iphones and im sure they have netflix or will get it. data usage is going to skyrocket in the next few years and i think these companies will need to put back in an unlimited data plan.

Perfect place for an Airport Express. "Don't leave home without it!"

Well, in order for us to find out if we can use it as a hotspot, they have to RELEASE iOS4.3!!!!!

So how does the mobile hotspot work when on an AT&T wifi spot instead of using our 4gb allotment?

Umm, why bother with the mobile hotspot if you already have Wifi? Just connect your laptop to the same wifi access point the phone is using.

I do this in McDonald's and Starbucks all the time. :)

This is good news for me, since I'm getting an AT&T iPhone shortly. I need it for work, and Verizon sucks in my area. I'll be happy to ditch my Droid.

they could care less.

So they do care? What a relief :D

And I definitely don't use my mobile Internet connection the same way I use my home Internet connection. Watching Netflix or any video longer than a minute or two on my phone just doesn't float my boat.

I was going to say the same thing. How are people using 10GB+ over 3g in a month? I watch 1 video over 3g and I'm tried of waiting and instead go find a hotspot. 3g is still so slow that doing anything other than browsing and email feels like a complete waste of time.

AT&T is screwing us at every other opportunity. I don't see why they won't offer a data-limited (2GB) tethering plan to grandfathered iPhone unlimited data plan customers. Seems like they would want to make another $15 on data that's already been paid for.

Let me see if I got this right. If you switch to their 4GB tethering plan, it's not an additional $20 on top of your regular iPhone data plan? It would end up being $20 for your 4GB of iPhone data that you can also use for tethering?

It seems tempting to have a rather cheap non-jb'd option to do this. I know I usually don't even go over a gig a month, and whenever I do use MyWi it's never really for too long. Hell, I usually just take my laptop to places that have wifi anyway.

Pretty tempting, but just knowing I have unlimited of something is just as tempting. haha

I use my Slingbox every day on my iPhone, which is the main reason why I go over 5GB most months. My area's 3G speed is fairly fast, fast enough that I don't notice a significant difference between wifi and 3G.

The only reason I jailbroke my iPhone 4 is the MyWi app, which I also use most every day. My phone is very stable...as long as you have a focused effort when you jailbrake, and avoid installing a million apps and hacks, you will be fine.

My wifi at work blocks a lot of ports, including all IMAP and ports used for VNC, plus the ports I need for my Slingbox and Internet radio. It only really allows for HTTP traffic.
