What?! I don't know... they may confiscate the device. So if you were to go and buy a new iPhone 4 right now, then immediately come home and cancel the contract, what would happen?

It'd be $199, with no fees/charges? I'd doubt this. An ETF is either charged or you must return the phone.

Yes, if you cancel within 30 days you have to return the phone. If you don't AT&T will charge the full retail price to your CC.

Yeah I should have said that, if you cancel during those 30 days you need to return the device.

is there a wat to check your ETF online? i tried looking but i dont see it online

if you signed before june 1 it's $175 - $5 for every month of service.

if you signed after june 1 it's $325 - $10 for every month of service.

so just look at your contract start date and do the math. or you can call and ask.

If you cancel within 30 days, and you don't return the phone, AT&T charges the ETF, which would bring your total costs up to:

$199 (16 GB iP4) + $325 (ETF) + $-- (your monthly usage fee, if any)

Right? I'm pretty sure they won't charge the full retail price, which is what.... $599? That AND the ETF?! How could all those "entrepreneurs" selling on eBay make a single amount of profit then... or better yet... even break-even?

Question

Now, I have a premier account and under Current offers it states

You may cancel service within 30 days from the activation date to avoid the Early Termination Fee based on the device. See Early Termination Fee Chart for details.

Does this mean I can cancel without paying the ETF? I'm sorry maybe it's cause it's late but I feel dumb.

you can always cancel within 30 days of signing the contract without paying the etf but then you would have to return the device.

iPhone 4 ETF with AT&T is $325. but regular (non smartphone like motorola razor) ETF is still around $175 as listed on at&T site.

i activate my service on iPhone 4, if i swap my sim card to a non smart phone(which i bought unlocked on ebay) would my ETF be changed from $325 to $175???
Just to close the loop on your original question.

The ETF is tied to the contract and is based on the specific type of device as of any new contracts as of June 1. Any Smartphone is going to get the new $325 ETF feature and other devices will benefit from the new lower $150 ETF.

Quote:

Cancellations/Early Termination Fee: You may cancel service within 30 days from the activation date to avoid any applicable early termination fee (the "ETF"). If your Service Commitment includes the purchase of certain specified Equipment on or after June 1, 2010, the ETF will be $325 minus $10 for each full month of your Service Commitment that you complete. (For a complete list of the specified Equipment, check www.att.com/equipmentETF). Otherwise, your ETF will be $150 minus $4 for each full month of your Service Commitment that you complete. The ETF is not a penalty, but rather a charge to compensate us for your failure to satisfy the Service Commitment on which your rate plan is based. You will be responsible for all applicable usage fees, prorated access charges, taxes, surcharges or other charges through the termination date. AT&T will refund your activation fee, if any, if service is terminated within 3 days of activation.

Right... I called AT&T Wireless today and the specialist told me that the way I can use the iPhone without penalty or service is to buy it on a new line/upgrade or as a new account and then cancel the service by paying the ETF, so that it's $199 + $325 + tax total. That's it.

Why would you do that? Isn't the 16GB $499 outright? I guess you'd only be out $25, though.

I believe it's $599, just as the 32GB is $699... or at least here in California it is so. I wouldn't know where you're coming from.

Technically, we can't even get the "outright" unlocked iP4s, though there is a way to get them... by purchasing it as a "gift" for someone else, which has the $599 (16GB) price tag mentioned earlier. Most people would argue to get the no-commitment iP4 that runs for $599, but that's not available to us either.

So signing and canceling, having payed the ETF to keep the device, is the cheapest way to do it, since it'll make it $325+$199, which is $525 (or $625 for the 32GB) plus the tax, instead of $599 (or $699) plus the tax respectively.

if i get a new service (on iPhone 4) and when i get the phone in mail , what if i activate my sim using another non-smart phone ? would that change my ETF?

it didn't.

the $325 won't kick in until the first bill is paid.

Thats explains it then :)

They are $599 and $699 for the 32GB.
You can buy it out of contract but they are NOT unlocked iphone 4's sold in the US.
They are all locked to AT&T still.

if i get a new service (on iPhone 4) and when i get the phone in mail , what if i activate my sim using another non-smart phone ? would that change my ETF?

No, no trick or other scam you can pull.
Once you purchase an iphone 4 your contract ETF is $325.
It doesnt matter if you use it, dont activate it or anything else.

Yes, that will lock you in at $175, plus a small fee.

If you read the fine print on your terms & conditions, it's all spelled out for you. It's important to set aside a large block of time, since the recent revision added quite a few more pages to the agreement. As far as the small fee, it varies depending on where you live and your state law. Just keep in mind that by using the method you describe you are committing felony fraud. You will be expected to pay all court costs even though you will be sent to prison. No worries, just think of the interesting experience that will be. After all let's not forget AT&T has highly skilled attorneys that will insure you are locked away for LIFE. But hey, the phones worth it right?

•just kidding :)

It says on the back of my receipt that if you cancel your service within the 30 days without returning the device, you are charged the difference of the full price. There is no early termination fee but you are required to pay the unsubsidized price of the phone. So, if you bought the 16GB for $199, then canceled your contract but kept the phone, you would be charged the remaining $400.

Thats up to you and your choice.
I was just letting you know how the system works and that your plan to get the early $175 ETF with an iphone 4 wouldnt work.
Trying to save you some time and aggravation thats all :)

I don't see what the big deal about high ETFs are unless you're trying to cheat the system / break a contract.

If you have a legitimate reason for terminating service (i.e. moving out of the country, etc) then ATT (and other companies) have always respected that and not charged an ETF.

If you are just looking to get out and make some random excuse or whatnot - of course you're going to get slapped with a fee.

I called them earlier and told them I was moving out of the country, they didn't seem too willing to waive the ETF. I am going to call back.

Hmmm... so then it would actually be cheaper to use a month's service and pay the ETF instead, right?

That being said... the cheapest plan would be: $39.99 voice and a data of $15, so around $65 with the taxed total perhaps... That's one month's use, on a $199 iP4 purchase.

That also means, that if you can cancel the service on the 31st day, after your month's usage, then you'll have $10 subtracted from the ETF.

$325-$10=$315; Then add on the plan costs and fees... $65+$315=380. You save 20 bucks and a bit of tax, and would have used a month's worth of service, instead of purchased a retail priced iP4 and done nothing with it.

Kind of weird, isn't it?

I would call and make sure there isn't a hidden clause that requires you to pay the ETF and the remaining price of the phone after the 30 days. They're really just being nice in allowing people to cancel their agreement within 30 days. It's not meant to be a loophole or a way to scam the system.
