I'm sick of not having 3G service! They simply don't care about rural areas. My understanding is that Sprint and Verizon both have 3G service in mine. I am on AT&T simply due to the iPhone, otherwise I would be GONE!! WILL BE gone!!!

I CANNOT WAIT! F U A T & T !

I'm with you. 90 days till freedom from big bills and dropped calls. AMF ATT

the A is Adios. I'll let you guess the MF part...

i think this guy is overestimating the "family plan" loyalty...

i know several people on that plan... everyone with families, duh... who would jump ship in a second.

this guy relying on "well, it's sorta hard to switch carriers" to retain customers is gonna get a nasty surprise, methinks.

it may be hard to switch carriers... but not as hard as dealing with att's service.

That guy was spinning BS for analysts. ATT is worried. Why else would they spend millions on advertising for their **** network. Also, they never mention the iPhone in their ads because they know this day is coming. Hopefully soon...

A better way to reassure investors would be to be able to truthfully say "our coverage problems are behind us. We offer a better product than the competition, and offer our customers a better value proposition. We feel most of them will want to stay with us because of this."
To be fair, I was just saying that was his intent - I never said that was the best way to approach it or it was necessarily the best things to say. And that trait is not unique to any CEO. Especially ones that are large monolithic operations like telecoms.

Didn't mean to suggest you were defending him. I was just commenting in general.

AT&T stock is going is going to plummet without the iPhone. Can't wait to see that happen.

I'm not on a family plan, but I do get a nice discount through my employer. In this economy, that discount is really helpful. Even though I added 200 texts, I'm still saving over $175/year. Also, I like their service, so I have no reason to move.
With regards to family plans, sometimes the iPhone holder isn't necessarily the one paying the bill. That'd make it difficult for someone to get away from AT&T.
If the rumors of the verizon iPhone are true, I'm going to sit back and enjoy the whining that is sure to come out of people's mouths. I'm not a verizon fan, so it'll be enjoyable for me.

The one that is an approved iPhone carrier in nine European markets. That one.

Right!
One of those countries is The Netherlands (about the size of Grand Canyon NP and 16 million souls):
- No Tethering (not on their priority list!)
- Very poor 3G coverage
- When there is coverage: bad network performance
- Recently: lots of promises about doubling their 3G network
- Bla, bla, bla

Lots of customers begging for either Vodafone or KPN (former national phone company, really good 3G coverage) as it was a small player in the market until the iPhone exclusive came tot them and the complaining started.

THAT T-Mobile!

Do you really believe that Verizon is a company that is looking out for the best interests of customers? If so, I have a bridge to sell you.

Verizon is trying to make a profit like the rest of them, but I do believe that they do care more then AT&T when it comes to providing quality service to their customers. The fact that Verizon has invested money to bring 3G service to some of the most remote rural places in the US means they at least care about coverage for their customers. AT&T only focuses on the top markets and does little for the less populated areas in the middle of the country.

In addressing the iPad, de la Vega noted that he is a fan of the device, using it extensively on Wi-Fi. He does, however, enjoy the flexibility of having 3G data services available, even though he apparently does not take much advantage of it.

Wow can't believe I am the first to comment on this part of his comments ... How can you go in front of investors and say ... I don't use our 3G data service! FAIL AT&T

I pray Tmobile USA gets the iPhone ... Tired of being on the dark side (unlocked) and not get all the benefits ... High speed ... Support ... Etc.

i have a 3GS that goes off contract next June. hoping for some nice Android phones on AT&T since i will probably never be able to switch to big red. probably will stay on iphone, but it will be nice to have a choice and compare

Verizon's AGPS service only works on their Navigation app. It is proprietary meaning that current Palm Pre Plus devices on Verizon cannot take advantage of Assisted GPS.

Do you really believe that Verizon is a company that is looking out for the best interests of customers? If so, I have a bridge to sell you.

If they really gave a damn about customers, they would have started on an HSPA+ network when the 3G launched like carriers in Canada did.

The giant smiley face cheesing next to my post should have indicated my sarcasm.....

If it goes to verizon, a big if at that, it doesn't mean it will go away on ATT. I hope it ends up with all the cell companies. If you have great service with ATT, stay with them. I choose by coverage since it's my cell and home phone all in one. ATT is good at work, ok on the drive home, but is missing at home. Verizon is good on all three so for me I wait.

The comment from him about seeing no exodus is naive.

I am on a family talk plan, and while I wont be able to switch if apple were to open to verizon on June 1, I would be able to switch soon after. AT&T has had exclusivity for more than 2 yrs now, so there is a rolling window now every month of family/business discount people able to switch with no fee.

Add on to this the fact that Verizon and others will likely try to lure people with incentives, and paying off any cancellation fee may be trivial or beneficial.

Sounds like a "spun PR message" to me.

Taken liberally, it means AT&T could lose 20% of its iphone customers in short order to another carrier. THats not 20% of their total customers, but still a sizeable chunk.

AT$T blows, their 3G network blows, and their wifi blows even harder, at least here in Silicon Valley. The hotel I'm currently uses attwifi to provide internet service, and I'm lucky to get 100 kb downstream with 600ish ms latency.

I have a family talk plan as well, and a corporate discount. I'd be happy to switch all of that to a competitor with a better network if Apple stops handcuffing us to AT$T.

They could hardly do a worse job of it.

I'd be surprised if this was a business that Apple would enter. So many towers to install and maintain. Not a good move...

Towers are stupid. Some other technology has to be in the wings, maybe orbiting drones or some other way to get long range transmissions so fewer towers are needed.

I think that the day Jobs announces a T-Mobile or Verizon deal during one of his speeches the top is going to fly off of that room from all of the applause. There might be a riot. I will switch the next day.

Apple. Yeah right. Puff puff pass ffs, I want some of what you're smoking
USAA. I will agree with this one. I am happy with USAA though I have yet to file a claim. They are a bit pricey compared to others but I won't switch.
Verizon. :D Another questionable one, from what I've seen there are just as many un-happy with V as with Att
So that's what happened to the Micro Machines fast talking guy. He's now working for at&t.

Bwahahahahaha +1
When Apple offers the iPhone on other carriers in the States I bet you will see about 1/3 of AT&T's iPhone customers jump ship, especially if Verizon is one of the carriers.

God I hope so, then 1/4 of those people will be on Verizon's forums bitching how they can't talk and surf at the same time and I'll get a boost in speed!
I don't mind the droves that leave if they do. That will free up some space for those who stay.

wah wah wah
Yep, lots-o-whining lately about apple/iPhone/at&t. Just wish they (the whiners) would hurry up and switch already.
...Still dropping calls at a current monthly average of 14.62% in my 3G full bars/service area. No big deal really, just business calls, clients etc. Can you enlighten me sir on when I may achieve some well respected service as outlined in our TOS together? My bill arrives monthly, no problems there....

Why stay with a company that doesn't provide you service? Doesn't seem very smart to me.
Anyone notice that the guy looks like The Micro Machine Man?

FAIL!! It's been posted and in a much better way.
I don't care how much it will cost to break my contract. AT&T sucks giant donkey penis with its lack of penetration in buildings. :/

Stop threatening and do it already ffs.
YES I said donkey penis and penetration

Sounds like someone is trying to let us know what he wants for his birthday.
...and no lube

Another gift idea.
"De la Vega expressed satisfaction with recent improvements in New York"
Yes, it's gone from horrible to just very poor. Still dropping calls, still spotty service and slow 3G data. As a paying customer, I have to express my dissatisfaction with the service "improvements" in NY.
Good job! Big bonuses for everyone involved!

Why would you keep a service that doesn't work for you? These types of complaints are really pointless seeing it's a very easy problem to fix..... Change provider.

I CANNOT WAIT! F U A T & T !

Why F U A T & T? You had 30 days to return your phone, plenty of time to know you didn't have good coverage at your house and change without penalty. It's your fault you have crappy 3g service at your home so why bitch at at&t?
Lucky you. I switched my, um, something-phone, from AT&T to T-Mobile and my bill went from $85 to $60. Another cool part is that reducing my monthly bill by $25 also boosted my SMS limit from 2000 to unlimited, and increased my monthly minutes by 50. Sorry AT&T, you're not competing well in the individual consumer market.

Wow, a man that did something about his issue instead of whining and threatening to do it. All the others read and learn.

I wonder if it even occurred to him what he was saying as he was saying it. As many of you have pointed out, the method they're going with to retain customers isn't based on better value or satisfaction - but locking them in with penalties or other barriers to switching. Sure, his responsibilities are to the shareholders first and foremost, but I would think keeping customers happy rather than putting up roadblocks for them would be in the shareholder's interests as well.
