What a shock, if only I didn't despise Verizon so much. Still sick of AT&T screwing those of us with unlimited plans. Instead of spending money on finding ways to get rid of our plans, spend money on fixing your infrastructure.
 
Switched to Verizon with the 5, got unlimited data. Good times. Miss simultaneous voice/data...but that's ok.

Discrimination? Look - I have the unlimited data plan. Happy it's still been grandfathered. That's a gift. And I'm no fan of ATT. ATT could easily just put everyone on a tiered plan at any upgrade cycle. They haven't.

Hardly discrimination.

How is them keeping me on unlimited data, which was part of my contract, a gift? I agreed to maintain service for x amount of time....and they agreed to provide me with x amount of services. If they pull unlimited, I should be able to walk free.
 
So, even though you get throttled on the unlimited plan, and Facetime wouldn't work while throttled, we STILL can't use it...

The reverse is given all those limitations, why not drop "unlimited" data? I'd venture to guess most of the people still using "unlimited" aren't coming anywhere close to 2GB/mo.

Have you upgraded your phone since the unlimited data plan was killed and you were grandfathered?

If so - then ATT could have easily/simply not extended the unlimited data plan. They would not be breaking a contract.

Now - if you are still with the same device as when you signed your original contract (and have not renewed at all since) - then you have a valid point. But I tend to think most people are not with the same device.

ETA: And actually - if the contract has been fulfilled, then you CAN walk. And ATT can automatically switch your plan. And if you don't like it - you can walk. So again - since the unlimited data plan grandfather is now longer than 2 years (the standard contract) - ATT isn't required to keep people grandfathered at all.

Of course - they know that if they kill the plan - some/many would walk to another carrier. Which is why they keep it but know they can most likely switch many people to a tiered plan by offering perks with those other plans.

I seriously expected AT&T to say all the unlimited agreements were signed during the 3G era and if anyone wanted LTE they would need a new contract. You should be glad that instead of saying that, they upped your throttle cap for LTE.
 
I suspect they are finding that no one uses Facetime, so it has little impact on their network. And for the few people that use Facetime, I expect they are doing so from home, office, or hotel and all those places have wifi, which will provide a better experience.
 
It was always ridiculous that people on the 5GB w/ Mobile Hotspot plan couldn't use Facetime, when we can tether another device to it and do Facetime over cellular through that. Doesn't make sense, and I'm glad they've change their minds on this. But will they hurry up and make it happen?
 
Scam

Sounds like a scam to me. Sounds kinda crazy that everyone doesn't have to pay extra for Facetime over LTE except for loyal/long term customers.
 
I'm 3 months in from when I dropped my unlimited plan.

Haven't regretted it once yet.

It was fun back in 2008, but nowadays I'd rather pay for data and actually GET that data rather than have "unlimited data" that's really just capped at 5 GB.

Face it, unlimited is gone in everything but name only. Stop clinging to the name when it's not even really unlimited data anymore.

Probably that, and that people with caps will go over if they make too many FaceTime calls, meaning extra $$ for AT&T. I still don't get why my wife's 300 MB plan charges a fortune for another 300 MB if she goes over (she hasn't yet, that's why she's still on it), instead of charging her the extra $5 to jump up to 3GB. Greed.
 
So those on the Unlimited plans still can't use Facetime over 4G, and we still get throttled if we use too much data anyway. Seems like more of a scam to get people to jump over to the tiered plans so they can make more money off those people who go over their limit.

I've never come close to ever hitting the throttle limit on my Unlimited* plan, so I'm still trying to figure out why it would be necessary to begin with. You can't tether, you can't Facetime (without jailbreaking), and you'll get throttled if you go over anyway, which defeats the point of being "Unlimited" anyway. So, why are we so desperate to hold onto this so-called "Unlimited" plan again?

It's not exactly unlimited. If you have an LTE plan they give you 5gb and after that they send you a threatening email and throttle you to GPRS speeds so you can barely check your email. I don't think I've ever even gone over 2gb myself though.

I hardly would use "loyal" to describe the majority of AT&T customers. Most are still with AT&T solely because a better option hasn't shown itself. Most complain and threaten to defect to Verizon/Spring constantly.
