Any ad that attacks competitors - even through apparent factual comparison with oneself - should be illegal in my opinion. It's negative at best. And it's a slippery road.

i think this is a good ad. There have been many times I've been talking on the phone and need to lookup something and ATT's 3G network allows me to do that.

Concurrent Voice/Data is a critical feature

Here in the Chicago area, coverage is great. My 3G service is better and faster than Verizon's. I realize that there are some users in SF and NY who are experiencing growth pains (wireless data usage is up 5000% over the past 3 years thanks to the iPhone). I don't think that any carrier would have handled that much stress. At least AT&T has a growth plan with their 3G Network (3.2Mb now, then 7Mb then 14MB). Verizon is stuck with their slow CDMA until they migrate to 4G (and this is years away before they can roll this out to a significant footprint).

There is ONE MAJOR difference between Verizon's service and AT&T's: AT&T allows simultaneous Data and Voice. I use this new iPhone App called CISCO WEBEX. This is a great tool for any remote worker. It allows you to dial into a conference call and view a presentation LIVE over the internet. This type of application is a must for any serious business customer AND IS NOT POSSIBLE on the Verizon network.

This is sad. Who will have the fastest 4G LTE network when all is said and done?

Not Verizon. There LTE network will only run at about 6 - 8 Mbps at launch, when it finally does.

AT&T 7.2 Mbps 3G will be about 4 - 5.5 Mbps in the real world, spiking to 6 Mbps. Not really all that much slower to the naked eye.

T-Mobile in the end will have the fastest. They are going to go to 7.2 Mbps, then right to 21 Mbps, which in the real world should net 14 - 16 Mbps.

If the current info holds, T-Mobile will have the fastest wireless network, through 2011.

If AT&T decided they wanted to be as fast as T-Mobile they could bump there 3G as well to 21 Mbps.

Verizon in theory could also bump theres even faster but they don't have the back end to be able to do that, and probably wont until 2011.

Not that most of this really matters for the next year anyway. The current Mobile Phone Processors don't have enough Bandwidth to even use all the available speed.

The iPhone 3GS can only do about 11 - 12 Mbps in the real world, The 3G can only do about 5 - 6 Mbps (Just test on yours with a connection faster then 12 Mbps or 6 Mbps on a 3G. )

Luke Fat?

Geez, what's with all the Luke bashing? Dontcha know that TV makes you look chunkier than you are?

I do with that Verizon would put Owen in their ad though. That'd be sweet.

Look, I've been a customer of both Verizon (pre-iPhone) and ATT (post-iPhone). I was scared to death of switching to ATT, but it hasn't been all that bad. Some dropped calls and reception issues that I maybe didn't have with Verizon. But Verizon wasn't perfect either. Still, if Verizon gets the iPhone I might consider a switch-back. At one point I had T-Mobile though...and that, my friends, was P-A-I-N-F-U-L.

Funny AT&T, I liked it. Nice to see a 'bash-back' ad.

Although I disagree about the best 3G experience on AT&T.

Lame and desperate.

AT&T tells you they have the fastest 3G but don't do anything to prove it. In reality it took them almost 3 years just to get their service fast enough to support MMS on the iPhone.

The company is the equivalent of a sloth and got caught with their baggy pants down.

This is going to be like the cola wars.

Except that Pepsi and Coke are both pretty much the same thing, with certain people having a preference for one over the other. AT&T plain old sucks. For the past several days I've had hours-long periods of no coverage in areas where I usually get full 3g. Frequently I'll have missed call and/or voicemail alerts beep at me HOURS after the person actually made the call, but the phone never rang on my end. Sometimes I'll even get the voicemail hours before the missed call alert.

I had Verizon before the iPhone, and I never had a single problem with coverage. I'm not going to say that Verizon is perfect, but AT&T is absolutely horrible.

So it's no cola war. It's more like a taste test between soda and toilet water.

AT&T needs to quit whining--Verizon has a valid point in the difference between 3G coverage between themselves and AT&T. AT&T needs to suck it up and build out their infrastructure. Money wasted on lawyers for frivolous lawsuits would be better spent on adding coverage. Verizon's LTE is going to keep them number one in the hearts and minds of us consumers anyway. Whining is a sign of weakness and shows a lack of caring that their customers are getting a 3rd rate experience with their cell phones, included the much-vaunted Jesus phone. I will NEVER, EVER be an AT&T wireless customer.

WTF??? Access to over 100K apps? AT&T does not have apps to offer...these are all offered via iTunes! What about the other millions of people who don't have an iPhone, but are using the AT&T network? What apps do they have access to? That's bullsh*t!

What's the point of a smartphone and 3G if you can use data and voice at the same time?!

Provide Access to 100,000 apps?

Did anyone catch this? They do not provide access to the apps. Apple does! Their add is misleading. You only get access if you buy the iPhone. You only get access if apple allows you to have access!

Terrible At&t, just terrible...

I feel sorry for the people in the board meetings that lead up to that commercial.

"Okay guys, lets come up with a commercial that touts At&t's advantages over Verizons!"

*crickets*

Kind of reminds me of that Satalite TV commercial where the Cable TV boardroom can't figure out how to compete.

They listed 4 positive points in that bit (not counting the dumb joke in the end) and two they weren't even responsible for (popular phones and apps-all Apple's doing).

I think At&t has told us everything we need to know.

Fastest Network*
Talk and Surf at the same time**

**As if people do that very often, if ever at all.

Nice Response ATT

I live in Minneapolis and for years have been subjected to Verizon's claims about offering the best service. I frequently had dropped calls. When I changed to ATT I was surprised by how good the service was as I had heard only negative things about them. I like the ad and am pleased ATT is finally fighting back with their marketing.

Wow

I haven't even looked at an iPhone because of AT&T. I had its cell service years ago, and when I moved to an area where its coverage was marginal at best, AT&T wouldn't let me out of my cell contract. I had to pay a cancel fee of at least $150.

If Verizon gets the iPhone, I'll take a look.

AT&T (which of course is not AT&T - it's just a company that bought the trade name) can kiss my butt.

Exactly the opposite happened to me... I waited and waited for Verizon to fix the coverage in my area. When they realized they didn't have the money to rent the cell tower i left and got an iphone on at&t. Best moment of my life. I always have full bars of 3G (because i don't live in an abandoned mine shaft, wyoming or in 6 feet under... Verizon doesn't get signal their either). So screw you, Verizon fans...

Man, Luke Wilson has put on some weight...

This is ridiculous. AT&T 3G coverage is poor. Stop trying to mask the fact -- beef up your network...

WTF is he really that fat now!?! Is is just a cgi trick to associate att with a beefy network and/or fat men?

Pretty pathetically obvious that sad sack AT&T requires "star power" to help prove their claim they're better than Verizon or Verizon was wrong in their latest ads. IF they're so good, why not use a generic actor or no actor at all? Can't it stand on its own, or do you need the distraction or the appeal of a Hollywood celebrity to get you to believe what they're saying.

Any ad that attacks competitors - even through apparent factual comparison with oneself - should be illegal in my opinion. It's negative at best. And it's a slippery road.

Restricting free speech is also a slippery road (unless it is hateful or invokes violence). Besides, if ads didn't attack their competitors, what exactly would they say? When it comes down to it, all of these big communication giants are all really quite the same, and their ads win them customers.

@ everyone else: I don't know why you guys take these ads so personally.

yep, as an ATT customer with 4 phones on my account, i agree. coverage has only been downhill past 3 years. hard to deny it. especially 3g coverage.

there are times it is hard at all to get any data service in an area. let alone all the dropped calls. it is beyond bs.

The reason why this ad sucks and all ads from AT&T will sucks is because they have absolutely nothing on VZW! (with the slight exception of being able to surf and chat at the same time which I do use a lot)

How many "celebrities" did they run through before they got Luke Wilson?

A more effective ad would be to use the only leg-ups AT&T has on VZW which is

iPhone - check

iPhone - check

iPhone - check

Attempted iPhones? - give them that one
