AT&T false advertising...

It is for 3 months out of a 24 month service commitment, so I do think that it is acceptable.
you

That is the most irresponsible advice people would give in these forums.

If you can get out of contract without paying for ETF, then get out of the contract right away. Any other advice is irresponsible.

That's not true. My advice is: If you'd rather not have the iPhone at all, get out without ETF. If you want the iPhone and would like 3G when it comes out, treat it as a 2G one with the rebate they are offering and enjoy the 3G in a couple months.

How is that not perfectly responsible. Of course, by your logic, I want the phone, but I would also like to be responsible. So I'm going to get out of my contract and then when 3G comes I'll buy it for the unsubsidised price! Financial responsibility here I come!!!

</fail>

I think it's fine, because if I didn't have the service and I was unhappy with it, I'd take my business elsewhere. caveat emptor.

Ok taking you business elsewhere is fine. But what about the people who quit using another carrier to come over to AT&T and maybe paid an EFT to do so. I guess they are just sh$t out of luck. These people relied on AT&T to give them accurate information on there 3G network before they switched over and didn't get it. caveat emptor (whatever that means):D

thank you. I didn't know how to respond to that post at first but there's no need now because you did it perfectly for me. :D

AT&T is the worst? Based on what? Your anecdotal experience?

While the lack of 3G in a particular area is frustrating, it is your responsibility as a consumer to do your homework before making such a purchase. I already gather that they advertised a 3G network in your area, but as was posted, AT&T cannot guarantee coverage. I think the $25 offer was generous on their part, because they could've easily done nothing.

Well when you live in Fort Lauderdale, FL and you have the worst coverage it gets annoying. especially when you see commercials that tell you how wonderful AT&T's coverage is. I can't even get a solid cell signal in my house. My wife is on T-Mobile and she gets full bars. I miss my t-mobile. APPLE UNLOCK YOUR PHONES, SET US FREE!!!!!

Stop mixing the fact that the iPhone is on AT&T in the USA. Both companies have their problems. It happens, these board are here so someone might look and fix it.

And I have called AT&T many times about my coverage problems. You know what their answer was? "We know you have poor signal quality from West of I-95 going down Griffin Rd to 441, and have no plans to fix the problem." Thanks.

Most people take these things into consideration when they purchase their phones.

Really?! Most people have an iPhone that they can take home and test out before they buy one. Please explain.

Well if there is poor signal quality in a particular area, it is likely not limited to one specific phone. I have poor signal quality near my mother's house, and I have with every phone I've had. Therefore, I expect poor quality near there, and won't blame AT&T for some sudden perceived "change in call quality."

I do feel it is partly my fault for not making sure before taking the plunge, especially with something like a 2-year commitment...

Oh God...

thanks Hooka and Snook for taking my side. it seems like you two are the only ones.

Most people ask about specific coverage in areas around their homes or places of frequent visits. Or talk to friends with the company about their coverage in the area before they make an expensive investment.

I believe AT&T will also let you get a cheap phone to "try" the service in your area.

This sort of thing is better found out before buying the iPhone. :D

See, I went into it fully aware I was going to miss out on 3G for a while, but I still considered it a good investment.

The real question is: Had you known you'd have to wait for 3G would you still have bought it? If so then take the giftcard and wait it out.

If not, try to get out without an ETF.

You have a limited amount of time to cancel your account! If you don't get the service that was promised, AT&T gives customers the opportunity to leave.

Wow.

So AT&T can put out a map showing coverage in an area where a tower DOESN'T EVEN exist, and posters here think that's ok?

We're not talking about weather, or trees, or buildings blocking the signal. We're talking about NO TOWER at all.

So, in this area, AT&T claims there is signal and then, after you buy a phone, says "Oops! Sorry!"

And people here think that's ok?

So I should know someone at AT&T before buying a phone? Come on dude, stop drinking the kol-aid.

I checked my service map before buying and it said I was at the "Top" of the list. when I get home and walk around my block I loose my phone calls without fail. And att just doesn't care.

And how do we know that we aren't talking about terrain blocking a particular area. Perhaps that's why they are activating a tower near where he lives soon.

And for clarification - to the original poster, did you ever get 3G service? Does it appear, then disappear?

Ok but like I said in my original post the people who paid an EFT to there carrier to switch to At&T they are still sh$T out of luck right? (it's ok you can admit it we all know):D

This question is directed toward me right?

I acquire a 3G signal for a few seconds before it drops to EDGE, and it never goes back to 3G. only if I go into preferences and turn 3G off and on again, then it reacquires the signal. But the switching to EDGE happens all over again.

They have towers... they are set up to be activated soon. We have a huge problem here with people expecting too much from companies. Nobody wants to take responsibility for anything. The map is APPROXIMATE; get that?

If somebody had taken a 3G phone there and checked, or he had asked a local rep, I'm sure it would have been easy to find out. Maybe even pick up a demo phone in an AT&T store. It'd be VERY easy to see.

So it's not just an "Oops Sorry" situation. It's a "Why did you trust something meant as an estimate without testing it?" situation. I would actually find it VERY useful to know if my area might be getting coverage soon.

Why shouldn't they be S.O.L.? That's their decision to make. Nobody forced them. That's exactly where people should take some accountability for their decisions.

Uhm, because he called AT&T and they told him that the 3G service in his area isn't being turned on until November.

That's the important part; "Turned on."

It's not like he lives in a basement or something. They haven't turned it on yet! Everyone keeps going on and on about terrain and how the maps aren't 100% accurate.

Those are details to worry about after the 3G service is TURNED ON.

I'm actually curious whether it's a phone problem then. Do oyu know anyone else with an iPhone who can test that?

Except that he did get 3G service momentarily, and then it reverts to Edge. I'd say the service is there, but perhaps not strong enough.

Dude I love the device but that sounds so annoying, I would call AT&T and bitch daily. I bitched about how long it took to get the 2.0 software upgrade and Apple sent me a Shuffle.
