Well AT&T might as well sue themselves.
I mean, it's obvious that they have one of the worst networks on the planet(or maybe just in the US.)

AT&T should just man up and go with the fact that their service is poor.
Like, we all know, this is serious competition. And that's what Verizon
Wireless is trying and still going after,..
:apple:

ATT is NOT debating the 3G coverage maps.

ATT is only claiming that viewers are too dumb to know that ATT has other, non-3G, coverage outside of their mapped 3G areas. That's all.

If EDGE could actually reach its theoretical maximum speed on ATT's network and on its phones, then it would be considered 3G. But it doesn't, and the phones can't, so it's not.

Even ATT does NOT consider EDGE to be 3G in their OWN map.

There's no 2.5G complaint from ATT. There's no speed complaint. You're making up complaints that don't exist.

All that ATT apparently wants, is for the map to also somehow show their non-3G coverage.

I never claimed that ATT was claiming 2.5G was the same as 3G, they are obviously not. That wasn't my point.

My point was that standards boards consider them in the same category.

Therefor that helps ATTs case since Verizon is comparing its slower 3G to ATT's much faster 3G only and deliberately making it appear as if there is no voice phone service in most of the United States on ATT.

No matter how you slice it, the maps are apples to oranges comparisons since ATT's 3G is faster than Verizon's and Verizon's 3G is faster than ATT's 2.5G EDGE and Verizon's voice service is included in their map and excluded from the ATT map.

Do people not get that point?

And these people that keep saying ATT has the worst network in the U.S. should try SPRINT or T-Mobile once in a while around different places in the U.S. Trust me, they are NOT better.

Maybe AT&T should just strive to compete then? Are they not the biggest carrier in the US still? Why should they have so little 3g support, it's ridiculous. Even in Houston I barely get 3g and I work downtown.

It would be interesting to see how Verizon's network held up under an iPhone-like crush of data use. We'll have to wait for an answer to that question, as Verizon has yet to field a device with iPhone-type success/demand that truly taxed their system (and no, DROID won't be it).

True - Verizon, with it's extensive customer base, (69M vs AT&T's 75M) had never experienced such a surge of growth/demand within such a short time frame - it would very likely have choked as well.

I had T-Mobile service before switching to AT&T, and have had tons of dropped calls during the course of 4 years with T-Mobile in NYC, yet very few dropped calls

using AT&T. (Lincoln Center area - fewer obstructions of air space)

With AT&T, coverage has been more consistent, sound quality has been far better, and their 3G service is now amazingly fast - near Wi-Fi speeds. Hopefully, with their recent $18 Billion

investment, service will soon improve noticeably enough for those who haven't been experiencing consistent coverage and signal strength, as AT&T's growing pains are eventually worked out.

Their billing is straight forward, and roll-over minutes are a deal maker, for many. T-Mobile cannot compete in this arena.

well...........i would like to hear the opinion of a person from Montana.....who has AT&T.....and has an iphone 3GS:p

Montana here.

And IMO, AT&T needs to stop whining and get some towers out here. Verizon has all their legal bases covered. The only outcome here is AT&T coming across as even more pathetic. If that's even possible at this point.

All ideologies aside

Um, no, just no. I provided examples where regulation has been beneficial because the original poster complained that all regulation is evil and bad, etc. Its called a counter argument. You will note that I did not say ALL regulation is OMG THE BEST! I merely gave examples of it doing good. There is nothing incongrous with pointing that out and also highlighting that neither pure capitalism or pure socialism are not the only options. In fact by highlighting that regulation CAN work it proves that pure-capitalism isn't the answer. One only need to point out examples where regulation hasn't worked to show that pure socialism isnt' the answer either. What does that leave us with? The answer is probably somewhere in between.

1. Capitalism and Socialism cannot be pure (nobody can quite agree on what they are).
2. Most CAN agree upon the fact that Socialism is NOT the opposite of Capitalism.
3. Capitalism has more to do with the ownership of Capital than regulations per se (Americans would disagree with this point, but they often mix-up free trade and capitalism; libertarians frequently depict regulation as an attack on "capitalism" to galvanize support for their own ends)
4. Most Capitalists LOVE regulations, when they are in their favour/favor (steel, airline industry, baseball, insurance industry, etc etc etc)
5. ALL markets have rules, with variable levels of enforcement

And what's that to say about Apple fans not realizing that CDMA+GSM phones are available (even from Verizon)?

Hey, I have the BlackBerry 9630 from Verizon. It contains a Vodafone SIM for international roaming. Not that I would ever fork over the $1,234,567,890/mo. that they want for an international calling plan. :D

This is why you can't say anything about other companies in adverts in Europe.

You can't do anything in Europe anymore. The amount of government regulation across the pond astounds me.

Wow. If consumers are dumb enough to think that there is no coverage outside the 3G areas, then.... ? ... Just wow. hahaha

I'm pretty sure that the people who don't know/care what 3G is have Tracfones and don't care anything about the iPhone or any other real phone anyway. Let's look at these two scenarios:

ACME Wireless
Phone: Free
Plan: Free
Coverage: None
(we don't actually
have a network)

Giganticom
Phone: $250
Plan: $80/mo.
Coverage: Nationwide 3G/4G

Let's say these two options were the ONLY two available. Which one do you think the "average", Tracfone-toting customer would pick?

Duely Misinformed

**** AT&T. As soon as Verizon gets the iPhone, I'm gone.

As a Salesman it does me no good to bad mouth the competitor. I love how I can come and read these blogs and listen how all the upset customers who have verizon can be mad and how upset customers who have AT&T. There has to be some reason why all people have issues. The average customer isnt gonna care about data and 2g and 3g. They just wanna make calls and text message. So either network is gonna work just fine. After working in both companies its funny to me how either can just bash the other companies. AT&T allows simultaneous Voice and Data and Verizon Does not, Verizon has a broader 3g coverage area than AT&T. So the positives and negatives are gonna be up to the customer. And by the way, with the bashing that Verizon did with their ads against the iPhone, how well does that suit with Apple execs to make a point to make an iPhone for Verizon. Verizon just sealed their fate with that one in my opinion, which is sad cause they could use it since their Churn is higher than AT&T's. Oh and At&T better improve their coverage area if they wanna compete also. So don't take sides in this battle poeple. Cause none of us really know whats going on.

Apple is pushing ATT into oblivion and at the final chance they'll buy ATT for 1mill.

It doesn't look like AT&T's little lawsuit threat is scaring Verizon. Check out the new holiday commercials from Verizon. All I can say is ouch! haha

Those are effective commercials and in my experience very accurate. iPhone is crippled by their exclusivity.

Anyone who uses AT&T extensively is aware of Verizon's superior coverage in the tri state area otherwise they're under RDF or in lala land.

You can't do anything in Europe anymore. The amount of government regulation across the pond astounds me.

After moving back to the US after 5 years living in Zurich, I can say, unless you're caught up in some seriously seedy business doing harm to others, their government might never even cross your mind, while ours is a daily dose of frustration. The industry I was working in no longer even exists in the US due to the legal and liability clusterjam of producing consumer products in house here. Go there, exercise the freedom they give you, come back here, and see if you still feel like America is the land of the free. And that's a lot for me to say, as a proud Veteran. Unfortunately, increasingly unproductive people, and an overabundance of lawyers capitalizing on the system for their own benefit, ruins the best of nations, time and time again. Not saying all of europe is perfect, but it's not 1776 anymore here or there.

Anecdotal accounts like these can go round and round endlessly and prove nothing. I hate AT&T, and T-Mobile is fantastic in my area. Yes, I've had both. I'm now on Verizon (with the Droid) because of work, and it floors AT&T too.
