Just talked to Jeff on live chat. It took me about 15-20 minutes but the end result is my upgrade fee wavied.

****, as a valued customer, I will go ahead and issue a one-time courtesy adjustment for the upgrade fee. You will be able to see this on your account within 24 to 48 hours. You can always check on your balance using our free service. Just dial *BAL# on your device.

Thank you, come again!

Just did an online chat with Ms Elizabeth at AT&T. Copied the OPs post verbatim and she said sure as a courtesy for a long time customer we will waive that fee. She states the next bill (which will have the charge on it) will show the adjustment under the charge. Thanks for the info! I also have a FAN discount.

Meh. Not worth convincing the account owner it's worth the $35, if I owned the account, than I surely would though.

I did an online chat. Pretty much copied and pasted the OPs opening statement. Removed charge of $36 for activation.

4 different reps via chat, no go.

Keep getting a canned response "these upgrade fees are standard, and allow us to give you good deals on awesome phones"

Still trying though...

Update:

4th rep came through:

Sasha Rep: Let me see what we can do about those for you.

BILL : Thank you

Sasha REP: We are unable to waive those charges for you since they are standard. And what those charges do for you is allow you to get the awesome discount on your phone. And you were able to process the upgrade when you signed the new service agreement which states that you agree with the upgrade charges

BILL : I understand the fees are standard, and that I agreed to them, I just would like them waived as a long time, loyal customer.

Sasha Rep: I am going to discuss it with my support team to see what we are able to do for you

BILL : Thank you

Sasha Rep: Alright Bill so since you are an excellent customer, what we can do is waive the's upgrade fees for you as a one time courtesy :) but you will need to pay them if you upgrade in the future.

BILL : Awesome! Thank you very much

Had to push and push and push but I got my $36 fee waived. Was told no 3 times but kept at them.

I called and was turned down saying my FAN discount didn't allow it.

I had the same problem. I ended up just returning my iPhone 5s and ported out to a prepaid carrier (for other reasons, not because of the upgrade fee :p) But hey they did refund the upgrade fee after returning the phone! :D

Instead of an upgrade fee you paid a restocking fee........what a winner.

I called in today and even though my phone is supposed to be delivered tomorrow I ask to have not one, but two upgrade fees credited back to my account. I just said that it has been almost a month since I placed my orders and I have not received my phones yet, I was wondering if I could get my upgrade fees credited back to my account. The rep but me on hold a few minutes and came back and said yes. easiest credit I ever got from AT&T. My suggestion, just be nice.

I did the Live Chat, asked for two upgrade fees ($72) to be credited. The guy kept me hanging on for about 10 minutes while he 'reviewed my account' then told me he could credit me for one upgrade. I took it, and later noticed my recent bill has been reduced by $40.50. Weird, but I'm happy.

Was denied yesterday via chat..."if your account doesn't say you're eligible for the waiver - I can't give it to you"....I pulled out all the "customer since Cingular", "I ordered and activated the phone myself" lines, but no deal. I will try again tomorrow.

Waived...

Love my new iPhone 5S. Especially since we were upgrading from the 3GS's which we bought new 4 years ago. Then they say this upgrade fee is a reasonable and standard fee.....

I'm still wrapping up my conversation with them. Very touchy all around. Ms Connelly was shakey throughout the conversation, knowing something like this would blow up (which I did). Got the fees waived because we've been with ATT for 4 years etc. Just keep trying.

It's extortion, and we should be saying something to our government. They actually care about things like that (instead of taking care of our Military et al like they should).

Waived too!

After my first try a few weeks ago, they credited my account $10 and said that's all they could do because this is a standard fee.

Fast forward to today and the rep pretty much said the same thing but I told them I was a long-time customer and he waived the $36 dollars for me.

Just the push I needed to help me wait for the Gold 5S a little longer

I was turned down on the phone because they gave me a credit when I bought my iphone 4 a couple of years ago. I too think this is a money grab, I will have another go at them, this time online, I have yet to receive my launch day ordered phone.

Same things just happened to me… I went for the online chat and they said my FAN account includes waivers for upgrades. Made my day!

I was told my FAN account doesn't include upgrade fee waivers, only new line activation fee waivers.

However, the rep did credit one of my two upgrade fees as a courtesy. Thanks!
