Yes, all three iphones I have used on gophone were locked AT&T phones.

To answer my question yes the 3g card works perfectly and I found the fix for sending pics.:)

I'm not sure why all the posts about buying a pack from Wal-Mart.... I just went to an ATT store last month, bought a micro-sim on prepaid (aka "go phone") which cost $15, and use it when in the US. Much cheaper than roaming.

That is just an old workaround from when they blocked the iPhone and smartphones from the gophone plans. They allow that now because they added smartphone data plans.

Ok I read most of the posts, and I think I understand them but just want to confirm a few things before buying an iphone 3gs:

I can just transfer my current at&t prepaid sim card to the iphone, correct? I don't have to buy a completely new sim card?

Also, I'm not currently planning to use a data plan, but if I decide to get one, I can do something (without unlocking) to add a data plan?
And I can still buy data per KB with my AT&T prepaid plan?

Thank you

Apparently they lock the SIM to a particular phone on a lot of the prepaid accounts. Sounds like they unlock it after six months or it's unlocked right before you use it. Just give it a try.

As far as data goes sign into your account on the web now and see if you can add data as a feature package like you can with texts.

If you need a SIM and IMEI number

If you need a SIM and IMEI number BestBuy has a Samsung A107 Gophone on sale for $2.99 Regular price $14.99.

I had one of those terrible little samsung phones last year on gophone. I took it to AT&T and had the number transferred onto a micro sim so I could use it on my unlocked iphone 4. They could only put me on the $2 a day plan with no option of a data plan. Useless really. Might try one of those other networks where you get it all in for like $45.

If you manage your go phone account online you don't see the ability to add data and/or text messages in the buy feature package section?

As we have often repeated the stores don't seem to really know what is going on and offer terrible advice. I'm on the 10c a minute plan with smartphone data for example.

I have just registered online so I will have a look when I can access my account. I am in the UK for another 4 weeks so I can't access my messages to get my password.

So when I have done this I should be able to add a data plan?

I was able to sign up for the 10 cent per minute plan. I can buy data whenever I need it.

Just shows they are bloody useless in the stores. I will go to a different one when I get back to the US. If no luck I will try online.

Clarification...

Ok, I've read all the way through this thread - thanks everyone for the great info.

I just want to clarify something...

Here's the background to begin - 7 months ago I needed to up upgrade my phone. I really wanted an iPhone but I live in the UK but work on a cruise ship in the US and got told I couldn't switch sim cards in the iPhone. I did a little bit of research which seemed to confirm this but apparently I was wrong :) I have been using a contract T-Mobile sim in the UK and a Go Phone sim in the US that I've had since 2008 in an HTC Wildfire which I HATE.

So, if I get a 3G unlocked iPhone on ebay, say, can I put my T-Mobile card in it and use that here, then swap to the Go Phone in the US and swap BACK again when I want? Does that work still? I'm not worried about data with the go phone sim but would like it with my T-Mobile sim when at home.

Thanks for the help on this and sorry if the answer is obvious and I've just missed it!

I think you are good. Over here tmobile won't get 3G because of the frequencies the phone supports but if you get 3G at home with iPhone you would be good all around with an unlocked phone.

Sorry to bring this up again.

I hae just returned to the US and my number is still active. I have put my AT&T sim in my iPhone 4 and using it as I was. I'm on the $2 a day. I am looking to upgrade to the $50 unlimited.

In store they tell me I can't add data plan to an iPhone/micro sim.

So I'm thinking my options are get a regular sim and set up a data plan and cut it down or try and add a data package online. Anyone have any experience with either options on an iPhone 4?

If not I may look elsewhere.

The $50 Monthly Unlimited Plan go phone plan does not apply to smart phones.

†Smartphone users must purchase a data package to use data services with any plan. Pay-per-use is not available with smartphones.

Looks like you can do the $25 Monthly Plan, $2 Daily Unlimited Plan or the 10¢/Minute Plan now with iPhone and have data on it.

The guy said I can do the $50 a month but the data won't work. Looks like I'm going to change to the $25 a month plan and add a data package. Then use an APN changer to get the data package to work.

Can I reuse IMEI code?

Here's the deal:

I did the gophone SIM in my iPhone 3GS and it works great. I bought $15 Nokia for this purpose.

Now I'm getting an iPhone 4S and I want to give my old phone to another family member to use as a gphone.

I have an unused SIM card. Can we use the original Nokia gophone IMEI code which I still have and set up a new account?

Or is the phone tied to my account and I'll need to buy a new gphone?
