FWIW, I just check my order status on AT&T and in the details it looks like I'm getting to keep my 200 message plan even though when I ordered I got the message saying that the plan was being removed...
I have no idea how AT&T figures out their pricing. My upgrade eligibility said "eligible for upgrade with $18 upgrade fee blah blah".
When I checked out on AT&T's site, I was never charged the $18 (and got free shipping).
I got that message too -- about my text plan being removed -- but was not given a choice of what to replace it with. Was that your experience too? If so, this bodes well for the rest of us.FWIW, I just check my order status on AT&T and in the details it looks like I'm getting to keep my 200 message plan even though when I ordered I got the message saying that the plan was being removed...
It looks like this was on the AT&T site. In case others want to try: What option did you select at checkout - no text messaging plan?
...
Update: A subsequent AT&T representative says you can't select the grandfathered text messaging plan on either AT&T or Apple's websites, nor can they specify the old text messaging plan during a phone checkout at AT&T or Apple. However, AT&T will honor the old plan if you call immediately after activating.

I kept my $5 texting plan ordering through Apple.com. AT&T's website tried to strip me of my $5 texting plan. Also, it change the name of my data plan and tried to switch that as well.
This was for an iPhone 4S order? How do you know that you retained the $5 plan?
I ordered on store.apple.com and specified no texting plan (the only other choice was $20/unlimited). Neither the order confirmation email nor the order status page give any indication as to which text plan I actually end up with.
Did you print the receipt page at the end of the process? Mine has the rate plan info included under the phone. Messaging plan is "iPhone Messaging 200" for $5.00.
This is strange. The $5/200 plan wasn't reflected on my final receipt, or on my status page.
I just called Apple, and the representative there said this was normal, but that because I had selected no texting plan I should automatically keep whatever plan I had previously.
It's unfortunate that AT&T and Apple aren't on the same page.
I guess I wait and see what happens. Both companies tell me that I get to keep the plan, they're only at odds on whether that's automatic or something I have to call AT&T about once I activate the new iPhone.
So did you guys only have "pay per use" and "unlimited" as options?
That's all I'm showing on mine as I scroll through the process.
If so, did anybody select "pay per use"?
I'm not seeing a selection for "no texting plan" that some of you have mentioned. This is on the Apple site.
Update. My $5 text message plan did get removed when I activated my new 4S, but I was able to get it back by calling AT&T customer support.

Yep. My $5 plan got removed as well. The chat rep I spoke to earlier in the week must not have had the right idea. Apparently I maybe could have saved my texting plan if I'd called AT&T before I activated the 4S, but I was told earlier that everything would transfer over without intervention, so I didn't.
Anyway, I called in and the CSR I spoke to opened a case to restore my $5 plan which was "removed inadvertently". Said it will take up to 3 business days to get that done. I was given a case number to refer to.
Hopefully that all goes well.
