First of all, the iPhone 4S in NOT HSPA+, it's HSDPA.
The D in HSDPA means better downloads but equal upload speeds to 3G.
If the iPhone 4S had HSPA+, you would see a 4G symbol next to the carrier symbol.
But still, pretty impressive speeds you all are getting :)

Oh god. It IS an HSPA+ device. The reason there's no 4g symbol is because apple doesn't want to classify 4g at all in their iPhones

4S has both HSDPA and HSUPA - while Apple didn't market it as such, I believe it does actually meet the criteria to be called "HSPA+", but barely. There are much faster HSPA+ devices out there (theoretically capable of 84mbps... but on AT&T, such potential is wasted). The reason there's no "4G" or "H+" symbol is because Apple chose not to implement one. Cosmetic difference, not a technical one.

I'm in trial period with a VZW LTE device. What I've been doing is using the VZW LTE device as a mobile hotspot for my AT&T iPhone 4S and my iPhone is super fast.

If only mobile carriers give you true unlimited (no BS, craps, throttling etc), I'd move to mobile modem for my home in a blink of an eye LOL

Imagine the congestion on a mobile network if everyone was using 10's of GB's. That's why there are caps...

Ding! Ding! Ding! We have a winner! They do that because HSPA+ isn't Four G, it's Faux G or Enhanced 3G or something like that, and Apple doesn't want to be caught up in selling something for something that it isn't like T-Mobile and AT&T.

Wish I had that dough sitting around. Drool.

I'll be calling AT&T in a couple hours when their customer service lines open. Over the past two weeks I have been getting between 0.02 and 0.03 Mbps! This has nothing to do with the area, as I use the 3G in the same spot day after day and have never had a problem. I have been getting the texts saying I'm in the top 5% of data users, but the fact that they've crippled it to speeds slower than 56k modems of 15 years ago is BS.

Welcome to throttling. There are several threads on it. I assume you are just complaining about the fact and not confused by it, right?

It does suck, luckily they appear to leave large corporate premier contracts alone.

I know I'm not being throttled but my data speeds have decreased alot in the South Jersey/Philly area. I notice the difference. I wonder if it's because the network is more congested because alot of people got iPhones/smartphones for Christmas.

However I have a VZW LTE device that I'm in trial period and data has been very consistent, but it's not an iPhone.

I guess I didn't look well enough for the other topics, but yeah, I'm aware of the throttling. I guess I just didn't expect them to throttle to the point of basically making data unusable. At the speeds I mentioned above, I might as well not even attempt using Safari.
I think the thing that upsets me the most is that for years these companies used to MAKE people sign up for their $30 unlimited data when people had Blackberry's and the like, back when mobile Internet was not nearly the same experience it is today.

Can't complain here...

6.99mbit was best I have seen so far... that was when I was traveling through Cincinnati.

Is anyone consistently getting HSPA+ speeds on their ATT 4S? I have yet to see anything past 4MBps on my 4S after travelling to multiple cities in the US.

Not sure if it matters but I noticed that when I first got my 4S I had pretty low ping times when doing speedtests' (<100ms) but lately everything has been 100ms+ and the speeds have been quite lackluster. I did verify that I am on the HSPA+ apn (phone) on my 4S.

I've gotten up over 10 Mbps before

Wow, I'm surprised you people are getting such high speeds, even 6 or 7 mbps in dallas! Up here in denton I'm only getting around 3-4 Mbps download on HPSA+...

A lot of that has to do with time of day. At home during the day I get about 2.5Mbps but late at night I can pull 4-5Mbps and early in the morning about 7. Just because your getting 3-4Mbps doesn't mean the tower isn't HSPA+. They have to have enhanced backhaul enabled too.

My speed has dropped off dramatically the last few weeks or so. I live in Seattle and work in Everett. After several tries to establish a connection at work, I pulled .60 Down and .04 Up.

I'm getting about the same at my house when I step off the WiFi. I used to get fine service and could stream music at work just fine. Then it just started being horrifically slow, when it's actually working.

Is this something I should go in and ask about?

I doubt I'm getting capped, only at about 1.5GB for the month.

It might be worth going in an asking them.

I changed my data plan. I got to thinking about all this unlimited data thing, so I logged into my account and looked at all my data for the past year and the highest I ever reached was 2.8GB with an average of about 2GB a month. So I changed my plan to the 5GB plan with hotspot. So now I can use my laptop or iPad when I need to. Doing this also allowed me to cancle the MiFi device I had that I was paying $40 a month for. So for me I am actually saving money. The few times I will actually need the hotspot feature, I doubt I will go over 5GB.

Yeah, I get horribly slow speeds... 90% of the time its less then 2mbps down and less than 0.75mbps up. Every now and then I will hit 4mpbs down. I've never seen anything higher. :(

Boohoo I have a Verizon iPhone the BEST speedtest I ever had was 2.44 mb down. .3 to .7 isn't uncommon.

You're not in the right places then. In Ohio, I was hitting 6000, and then Michigan got me up over 8000. In CT, it seems to have an artificial cap of about 5500-6000, as it pretty consistently Speedtests there. The upload tests are also getting better and better.

Where in CT are you? I work/live in the Ellington area and seem to get these speeds everywhere.
