Speeds aren't great, but ping is much better than on my iPhone 4.

I was just in Seattle and I didn't get anything close to that. More around 1-2. I'm starting to think my 4S isn't on the new HSPA+ network..

If it's on 3G in an HSPA+ area, it's on HSPA+, there aren't two networks. Speeds can vary a lot from block to block in urban areas depending on how sectors are loaded and such.

SE Dallas, Pleasant Grove. I guess this is the only good thing about living in the 'hood - not many data hogs around here lol

In the hood in NYC, the iPhone gets about 250k. I guess those people are too poor to pay AT&T a lot of money for new iPhone and service, so AT&T builds them a crap network.

Fastest speeds I've seen. Kind of pathetic. Makes me miss my Droid Bionic 4G phone sometimes, where I averaged at a minimum 12 Mbps, and up to 26 Mbps.

Is there a way to check if I am using the 850MHz towers on ATT? My friend who has an iPhone 4 was getting full bars while my 4S was only getting 2 - we were sitting right next to each other..

Here's mine. Located about 30-40 miles from Detroit where the server is hosted.

Coming from Android...why does the iPhone have such a humongous ping time? I had pings of 10-50ms on Android devices.

Interesting, I was around 26 Mile Rd and only got 5.5 Mbps.

Here in Houston I've never seen anything faster than 3.5 Mbps. Since we have LTE here I assumed the towers would have plenty of backhaul to handle things even on the HSPA side, but I guess not.

I think you should log into your att.com account and make sure you have a data plan for iPhone 4S. The 4S plan is HSPA+ and if you don't have that, you won't get good speeds.

Way to totally not answer the question being asked. Sheesh.

Aiko, You need to get into the field test or diagnostics mode, which takes a big long code, and then you can see the UMTS channel number. Those numbers then correspond to blocks of channels in PCS or CLR, which you can look up online. It's not exactly the easiest thing to do, but I have had fun watching mine switch from PCS to CLR as I death-gripped it hard enough.

It's a valid point though. The 4S data plan is different from previous iPhone plans, and provisions your phone with access to a different, HSPA+ specific APN. If you don't have it, you probably won't get HSPA+ speeds.

If I could get speeds like this at home, i would consider a cell modem instead of my wimpy dsl line (fastest available in my area)

What are you qualifying as HSPA+?

How do you know if you're on HSPA+? The coverage map online says that I am, but how can I be sure? I thought they were going to make it say 4G on the iPhone.

Damn, I didn't know that. I'm glad I came into this thread. I thought I was being smart by just swapping out my SIM card to save on the activation fee.

i'm in the philly suburbs, the coverage map is hspa+ saturated but my speeds are horrible. 1-2mb on average. occassional bump to 3-4. some of you post higher 3g speeds lol. i'm jealous :(

i don't know... i know people have had different results with this. when i switched mine there was absolutely no difference.

Actually, you don't know for sure unless you use speedtest.net to check your speed. AT&T has asked Apple to change the icon to either 4G or H+, but no word on whether Apple has agreed to do it. I guess we'll see with 5.1.

I was pulling around 7mbps a couple days ago. Today I'm pulling 5.5-6mbps. I think we recently got a backhaul upgrade here... before I'd be lucky to get more than 1.5mbps or so.

My upload is at 1mbps though. I think it's being capped - I know in the past I've gotten uploads as high as 2.8mbps

They've got ones at around 10,000 on Hofo, I just got this one in Michigan, but it's not typical:

Yeah where I live, my DSL line sucks too, my carrier has much more speed (on 3G) than my home internet, but then again my DSL has true unlimited connection, no throttling whatsoever. I can reach 80 GB usage monthly without worrying about getting notice text :p

If only mobile carriers give you true unlimited (no BS, craps, throttling etc), I'd move to mobile modem for my home in a blink of an eye LOL

Just call them with your IMEI number. Or go to the ATT store. Shouldn't cost anything.
