ATT is adjusting to Verizon as well as T-Mobile.

All the four major telecom companies are passing the smartphone cost to the customers.

$650 iPhone, we will know how this is going to impact apple bottom coming quarters.

Yeah AT&T always seems to roll out new plans around iPhone launch. Best to wait another year to get a better deal
And then you might as well wait another year to get even better pricing. ;)

Because believe it or not, not everyone uses a ton of data. I'm pretty sure my parents could share a 300 MB plan and not go over.
My parents do use this plan. I think they'll bump it up when they go on a trip, but 10 or 11 months a year this is all they pay for both of them.

Here is a idea AT&T how about NO! A better idea kill of the sharing plan and give customers unlimited data plan and don't want hear excuses how it is not possible you greedy POS.

It's for people on dumbphones. They still have to purchase data. A dumbphone works out to be $40 a month with unlimited minutes and text, with no subsidy.
Those griddy bastards. I see the plan includes México, talking of which I currently pay USD$ 12 a month for 200 minutes, 200 SMS and 1.2 GB data with free email/social networks and 3 free text/call numbers.

In practice, thats unlimited calling/texting to me, I think people would be sourprise how little they actually call/SMS these days.

The BS continues.

$100 should easily get you 25GB.

The connect fees are BS. It's why I still buy iPads wi-fi only. What do you need $15 A MONTH to connect my iPad. I paid for it and you didn't subsidize it PLUS I've already paid for the gigs of data so whether I have the iPad or not, I still have my gigs of data.

US cell companies are running a racket.

I signed up for 4 GB of data for $70 originally, then they bumped me to 6 GB for $70... I think I'll drop to the 5 GB for $50 ASAP.

I'm really happy that TMobile is forcing AT&T to try to keep me.... And if AT&T ever stops trying, I might just swap to TMobile.
Just FYI, I'm not attacking you with this. I see accusations always slung around about how terrible T-Mobiles network is, or that, in general, T-Mobile is less expensive because they don't have the same coverage, reliability, or signal penetration. To an extent, I'm sure that's true. That said, if AT&T and Verizon were not feeling threatened by either T-Mobiles pricing, network, and/or extras I don't think they'd be reacting nearly, as much.

Dropping prices and eliminating subsidies isn't a token response to some who is just supposedly blowing a lot of hot air. So it's always strange to me when I see others dismissing T-mo.

The AT&T support chat person said everyone on plans 15GB or more will automatically get Canada/Mexico unlimited calling/texting without having to do anything. I would make a test call and wait for the bill to arrive next month before calling my grandmas.

iPhone ASP is somewhere at $600.

ATT/Verizon not getting anything from the device sales, they are forced to go Installment plan and remove the subsidy.

There is alternate Cricket, T-mobile, GoPhone. Only if people move around then carrier will adjust their price.

Does this include people who were on 10GB plans but did the "double your data" promotion and now have 20GB for the 10GB price?

I don't think so. I'm on this too and it's been pretty tough to beat. I hope this goes on for a long time and doesn't expire after a year or something, although I don't think we ever use more than 10 GB/month.

How much are you paying per month for the 15GB (30GB doubled) plan?

Just comparison this is the old plan. For people on 3GB shared (comfortably) the new plan is worse.

Why is it $40 more to jump from 15 GB to 20 GB?? That doesn't make any sense to me. The $140 plan should be at least 30 GB.

Wow, that's a pretty passionate response.

Just to clarify, my original point wasn't "whoo!! go Europe! US sucks!", but more "I hope you get fairer prices soon". I'm not sure why you're being so defensive for companies who, at the best of times, are widely regarded as pounding the consumer. But hey, if you're happy paying $100 a month because you feel you get more for your money, who am I to argue.

Most european mobile operators charge HUGE for incoming calls, so the offset is, you probably don't get many incoming calls, since calling your mobile will cost almost everyone who calls you about $2 a minute, so the price isn't much lower in that regards, half of it's just shifted to people who call you.

Greed, corporate gluttony - move to T-Mobile, pay 30 for unlimited LTE - give them a try, they'll buy out your contact, and if you find out they don't work well in your city (because, again of corporate greed, att and verizon allowed to get all the low spectrum that penetrates farther), att will buy you back.

AT&T's site has not been updated yet, but I'm assuming anything over the 20GB plans are not changing in price since it was not announced. What doesn't make sense to me is that if you have at least 2 phones on the plan and previously needed 30GB or more (without the double your data promotion), it is cheaper to have two accounts instead of combined into one for the 30GB and 40GB options. Old 30GB plans are $225 and old 40GB plans are $300. If prices stay the same, why not split into two accounts and get two 15GB plans for a total of $200 or two 20GB plans for a total of $280? There are no general fees associated for the account itself, only for each line individually, so why not separate accounts? If they ever change to lower the prices, then combine back into one account since there is no contract, and thus, no ETF.

What does this mean for me? I have the old 15GB plan but upgraded to the double data when ATT was offering it a short time. Now I have 30GB. No price change?

I did the exact same. 15GB -> 30GB. Glad I did it because I've been nearing 30GB quite a bit some months.

I'd like to get in on the free Canada / Mexico, but I currently have the 30GB "double data" plan. I don't want to lose that!

This is great for anyone on the current 10GB tier, though.

Do US residents actually call Mexico? I usually just drive around the block to find some for help with side work. I mean, they are already here.

Not trying to be mean, just saying.

Because your iPad has to communicate with towers 247 every few seconds (ping) whether you use data or not.

I doubt you would appreciate people pinging your web server and not visiting it which earns you revenue.

The customer has always been responsible for the full price of the phone. I don't see any literal "passing" or transfer of costs, just figurative. Just visibility of costs.
