$30 for 3GB and $50 for 5GB? That's some expensive data. These guys get better at gouging customers don't they?

I'm still on "unlimited", where the term "unlimited" means up to 2GB then I get throttled.

Buy a several hundred dollar phone on a one-dollar, paper mache network. Then have fun with dropped calls, slow 3G speeds, and throttled unlimited data. Top it off with horrible coverage and horrible tech support... FTW.

LOL

Att's 3g is way faster than Vz's, the 4s even has hspa+ which is technically 4g. And the whole dropped calls thing is 100% dependent on your area, where i live Vz get 0 service while att gets 5 bars. And if anything based on experience and what i have heard, att has way better tech support than Vz.

I disagree

HSPA+ is not 4G, it's 3G. My work-issued iPhone dropped 5 calls today in downtown PDX. Verizon 3G seems slow on paper but it's more than adequate for me. I don't even use Verizon 3G, I use their LTE on my own line which exceeds well in excess of any speed on AT&T 3G. Verizon support is not outsourced and in store and on the phone, they take good care of you and are always friendly. Dunno where you are, but AT&T is so awful you want to throw your iPhone at the wall at how slow 3G is. So slow it feels like EDGE.

Kudos to AT&T being trouble-free for you.

AT&T and VZ both have their drawbacks.

Instead of bickering over which is better, both sides should join forces and get these companies to stop price gouging people for using their devices they pay for.

They could have just been honest and say, "This 4G upgrade to our network is costing us a fortune. We need you to pitch in."

Oh and by the way, instead of bitching about it on the macrumors forums, call AT&T and let them know you aren't happy and be willing to leave t contact end.

The two CDMA and GSM providers joining as one? I'll drink to that

This is a better deal for me. I tend to use just above the 200mb now....so getting 300mb for $5 more is better than paying overage rates.

Why is everyone crying about this?

It affects NEW users, not current users - and you still keep your plan when you upgrade devices. Verizon will follow suit soon anyway.

Anyone personally tried to roll out a LTE network across the US before? It's pricey, and far easier (cheaper) in Europe where there is less land mass and more interoperability.

How dare you try to bring logic to the conversation!

They gouge you because you as an end user demand cheaper and cheaper phones; they're like the printer industry, sell you the phone cheaply (when compared to the full price) and the gouge you on the data, texting and phone calls. That $199 phone they sell they're making an approximate $300-400 loss off so use your brain for a second to work out how much cash they have to bring in not only to pay for that subsidy but to also cover the cost of the service they're selling on top.

Want someone to blame for the current situation - blame customers who refuse to pay full price for a phone. Those people are the problem, the same people who can't work their head around why they're so cheap in the first place when on contract.

First AT&T wanted to buy T-Mobile for $39 billion and that failed. Now AT&T, use that $39 billion (-4 billion of fees) TOO IMPROVE YOUR NETWORK and possibly add unlimited data back.

How about just simplify things and offer just a single rate of $10/GB

Individual user: $20 for 2GB. (Essentially min purchase of 2GB)
Family account: $30 for 3GB pooled. (Essentially min purchase of 3GB)

And how about just include tethering for free with these rates? You might just get people to actually pay for and be satisfied with service rather than pissing people off???

That's another great point..they really need pooled data.

So this is basically a price hike.

Does this apply to unlimited users as well? I have a 3GS that I pay $30 for the unlimited data. This won't change will it? And what if I decide to upgrade to an iPhone 5? Can I still keep my unlimited data or will I have to switch to the new plans?

I went from my old iphone 3GS to an Atrix 4G and at&t let me keep my unlimited plan - you not even changing from an iphone so you should be ok I think

Now that is funny. You sound like you have a "Sprint" phone. :) Sorry to hear that. I guess if you have never used AT&T Network, and just took an upgrade to Verizon, that would seem like a FTW for you. Just make sure you buy two phones so you can surf, talk, and text at the same time. :D

I have a Verizon phone, And use AT&T's crippled network on my iPhone for work. My HTC Thunderbolt can talk, surf, text, and tether at the same time on 3G. Thanks

3rd world countries have unlimited data plans. 3rd. World. Countries. In the most technologically advanced country in the world, its ridiculous that unlimited data plans aren't even available... especially considering the proliferation of the internet and smartphones.

Third world countries aren't as populated as the US for their network to slow to a crawl, by all these unlimited data users. Which seems to be only excuse carriers are coming up with for ending unlimited data.

People are happy about this? People it use to be unlimited. So how is AT&T doing us a favor? Corporations know how to make citizens feel good about something they shouldn't feel good about.. Bravo corporate America, for your elaborate corporate trickery. We are so stupid.

Because unlimited isn't unlimited. People are being throttled when they hit 2GB of usage in many areas. At least with these plans you won't be tethered.

I have the grandfathered unlimited data plan with AT&T, and I'm in an area with excellent coverage and can confirm that AT&T definitely throttles data!
