Steve Jobs did NOT make this clear in his keynote on 6/9. Not even close.
now that is somewhat of a valid argument. I say somewhat because the truth is that the BS is all coming from ATT. But yes Jobs didn't warn folks in the keynote that ATT might have additional costs in the pricing scheme on their side.
ATT is treating this like any other phone. If you sign a 'commitment' and walk off with free equipment you really aren't. you are paying it off within your service plan. so if you cancel early, you owe them that money. Check your current contract, I bet it is in there.
but there's the beauty as well. your contract might mention prorated fees etc and you can call ATT and stick it to them on your contract. sure you end up still paying something but isn't $50 cause you are 5 months from the end of your contract better than $200.
and folks there is another solution. file complaints. with ATT, with the BBB, with your state Attorney General's office. I figure that a flat $200 fee on remaining equipment costs and even not making it clear that that is what this money is all about is something the AG's consumer offices would be interested in. Not to mention there's probably a way to ding ATT via weights and measures 'advertised price' rules. or at least try.
or in the end, just don't get the dang phone. after all, no one really needs it. our lives aren't going to suddenly end because we don't have an iphone. vote with your money so to speak.
