Steve Jobs did NOT make this clear in his keynote on 6/9. Not even close.

now that is somewhat of a valid argument. I say somewhat because the truth is that the BS is all coming from ATT. But yes Jobs didn't warn folks in the keynote that ATT might have additional costs in the pricing scheme on their side.

ATT is treating this like any other phone. If you sign a 'commitment' and walk off with free equipment you really aren't. you are paying it off within your service plan. so if you cancel early, you owe them that money. Check your current contract, I bet it is in there.

but there's the beauty as well. your contract might mention prorated fees etc and you can call ATT and stick it to them on your contract. sure you end up still paying something but isn't $50 cause you are 5 months from the end of your contract better than $200.

and folks there is another solution. file complaints. with ATT, with the BBB, with your state Attorney General's office. I figure that a flat $200 fee on remaining equipment costs and even not making it clear that that is what this money is all about is something the AG's consumer offices would be interested in. Not to mention there's probably a way to ding ATT via weights and measures 'advertised price' rules. or at least try.

or in the end, just don't get the dang phone. after all, no one really needs it. our lives aren't going to suddenly end because we don't have an iphone. vote with your money so to speak.

i have a first gen iphone and i checked online to see if i can upgrade and they said that the line is eligible for equipment discount pricing when you sign up for a 2-year service agreement so this means i can get the 3g 16 gb for 300 right ?

from what I read of their information yes.

my understanding is that ATT did NOT sub any part of the cost of the original iphone. it would basically be as if you got your phone while with another service and quit that and brought the phone to ATT for new service.

and since they didn't sub any cost of the phone there is no equipment cost to recover, thus no way to justify an extra charge on your plan. so you are treated like a new customer in terms of equipment pricing. however if you get cute and break your contract (say to jailbreak your phone and sell it), you will owe ATT the $200 they put up so you would only pay $299 and not $499 for your phone.

voting with your consumer dollar is a great thing.

that said - i called AT&T yesterday and they told me i could get the iPhone for the $199 price even though my two-year commitment has not been fulfilled. the woman i spoke with made it sound like everyone will be getting the $199 price as long as they ask nicely enough.

questions about apple store

i'm 18. i'm eligible for the upgrade with AT&T. if i wait in line at the apple store for the iphone, when i get to the front of the line are they going to make me sign a new contract right on the spot? can i even do that as an 18 year old? my sister is also coming, she's 15. can she even get an iphone that day? do you have to activate your iphone at the apple store? (because with the 2g you didn't)

just got a iphone off ebay ($270) im crossing my fingers that i will become 3g eligible once i activate the 1st gen iphone i got from ebay if not i will be happy keeping it.

i bought my iphone on may 21st im kinda curious to see if someone in the store might pull a string....

my dad is also part owner in a company that is swithching to at&t and they are getting several iphones in the deal for 99 bucks each. i might be able to get out of there i with a new one hehe.

but if i cant, big deal.

it sounds like yes.

it might be a state by state thing but in California, an 18 year old can legally enter into a contract without a parent so you would be fine. your sister however would not be. she can't, at 15, sign a contract. so a parent would have to be with her. unless you signed up for a family plan and took financial responsibility for paying for her phone as well as yours

do you have to activate your iphone at the apple store? (because with the 2g you didn't)

from what I understand yes. you must activate in store. which means a credit check, etc.

and a major part of that is because they didn't make you with the previous phone and then a lot of folks didn't and unlocked them and used them with other carriers or even sold them for a massive profit, sometimes overseas. not cool from Apple and ATT's POV. so point of sale activation like all other phones have is a way to try to stop such games. or at least lessen them

I read on one of the on-line rumor website (I don't remember which one) that existing iPhone customers would pay $199 for the new 8GB iPhone and have to sign a new 2 year contract as was reported here. However, that other post stated that existing iPhone customers would continue to pay the $20/month charge for digital service and 200 SMS message plan. In other words, we would not be forced to sign up for the new plan that costs $30/month and has no SMS minutes included. I have not seen this reported anywhere since that day so I don't know if it was in error or was correct. Does anyone know?

If I can keep my old plan and just have to resign for 2 years, then I might go for the iPhone 3G, however, if I will loss my current plan (a 50% increase in cost and loss SMS messages) then I won't go for it since there are few areas in the US where 3G service is available and there will be little reason for me to change phones. I will just wait for the iPhone 4G.

Dave
How have you read all of this and still think that theres a loophole??? IF you are eligible then you get the 3g for 199 or 299... And you must pay for the 3g service. Where some people get their information is scary...

second hand iPhones not eligible for upgrade

just got a iphone off ebay ($270) im crossing my fingers that i will become 3g eligible once i activate the 1st gen iphone i got from ebay if not i will be happy keeping it.

I spent about 30 minutes a few days ago on the phone with at&t asking a lot of questions about iPhone subsidy eligibility. I'm in the "current at&t customer that is not eligible for an upgrade" category, so I was trying to find any workaround I could to be eligible for the iPhone 3g subsidized price. Bottom line is, there is no workaround (inexpensive workaround anyway). One of the first things I specifically talked about was being able to upgrade from a second hand (used) iPhone. After the rep spent some time researching and talking to managers, she told me that in order to be eligible for the subsidy, you have to be the original and only owner of the iphone. If you bought an iphone second hand, (this part was a little unclear) you either are still not eligible for the subsidy until your original eligibility date, or you have have to finish out the two year contract of the original iphone owner. Either way, it will be a while before you're eligible. So, I gave up my hunt to try to find a subsidy and bought a wii instead. I qualified for their lowest price immediately.

They done me wrong

Two months ago I went to AT&T to switch carriers and wanted the iPhone. I was told they were out, but new ones were coming. However, I could just choose any phone in the meantime and when the new phones came out, I could switch over with no problems (it would just recycle my 2 year agreement).
Well, I am not 'eligible', so I have to pay the higher price for the iPhone. If I had not listened to their advice and waited, I would get one for $199.
Thank you AT&T - for letting me know how I will be treated for the next 22 months, cuz after that, I am gone.

Hey man that sucks really bad but you have to realize that retards and snakes work for all companies. I feel people like this need to be brought around back and shot. Dont judge the company on what a few stupid people do. I would contact at&t on the phone and talk to people until they give you someone who can do something for you....If you tell them your story somebody is going to be willing help you out. Keep on getting managers and managers' managers on the phone, and if something still doesnt happen then yea i agree, switch to another company

after putting some thought into it i think you guys are making this MUCH harder than it really is

Upgrade date changed

I was wondering if anyone else has had the problem I am dealing with. In May I checked my upgrade eligibility date (because I knew the 3G iphone was coming and assumed it would require an upgrade) and the website told me it was 7/29/08. Once June 9th rolled around I figured I could stand to wait a few weeks after the release to get it so I didn't stress. Today, I checked my eligibility again just to make sure I wasn't wrong and now it says 9/20/08. I called ATT and sure enough they show the change in dates. The CSR couldn't tell me why nor was he able to correct it. I am now waiting for someone to call me back. I am wondering if I(and possibly others) have had our Eligibility dates changed in the last month or two to help compensate for the iPhone release. Maybe ATT is trying to milk some extra money out of people or possibly alleviate the initial rush.

You are all WEAK!

I cant believe all you people that are bitching. Some have legit gripes but most of you are just pissed for no reason. ATT is a business, and businesses are here to make money...period. And no, I do not work for them, but I am a customer. And no I do not qualify for the subbed price, "omg, omg, I cant get a new iphone for 200 dollars",,,F00K DAT! its a phone people, get a grip on yourselves. I have a tilt and in my opinion, its way better than the cry-phone. Just because its apple you think you'll be treated fairly. You think apple got to where they are by being nice? How come all the sudden apple goes 3g and you all go gaga. Winmo and other smartphones have been 3g for quite a while now. "OMG! they have push email now...well guess what, I've been using push email for years. Apple does 3rd party apps and you all say "genius". WHY! Have any of you checked XDA Developers lately and seen all the FREE APPS! that are there for winmo devices? If you want a toy then get the stupid phone. If you want a device that will actually be useful then get a winmo device. Iphones are for people that cant figure stuff out for themselves and have to have it laid out in front of them. Shut the eff up and move on. How much mobile surfing could you do anyway? Save your money, your gonna need it when the oil runs out and your cute little phones stop working,,,hehehe thats gonna be the big joke...when baby bush splooges all over your faces, and mine too I guess. WAKE UP PEOPLE!!! Flame away jerk-offs. Don't think I wont flame back either. I'm a repressed Asian male who dont know when to shut-up.

Eat the rich, they're eating all us.

I wouldn't count on that. My understanding is AT&T stores have no flexibility in pricing. It's all based on what their systems says as far as upgrade eligbility. If your account isn't eligibile for an upgrade, I don't think you're going to be walking out at a $199 price point.

I asked three times to confirm. The AT&T rep said I was "close enough" to my eligible date (9/16/08) to get the $199 price.

After seeing the AT&T rate hikes I am seriously reconsidering buying the iPhone at all. It's actually $40 more than the old iPhone over the 2-year period.

What a JOKE how Steve Jobs said they dropped the price so more people could afford the iPhone and then Apple/AT&T actually RAISED the price. Has anyone called Jobs out on how full of crap he is? Sorry Steve - I love Apple products, but you've lost me on this one.

You can save $25!

If you are an existing ATT customer, not eligible for an upgrade, you can cancel your existing plan for $175 and get the $199 price as a new customer, thus saving yourself $25! This is in spite of the fact that ATT stands to make at least $720 more from you over the next two years at the iPhone requires more support from them (at least 30/mo. X 24 mos.). Wake up, ATT...this is the same kind of business practice that got you in hot water back in the 70's...some of us still remember.

I'm not so sure about this. After calling several people at AT&T and getting just as many answers I quickly realized that no one was really sure. The second hand iphone thing doesn't seem to be true. My girlfriend and I are current AT&T customers on a family plan and were not eligible for the new Iphone at the discounted price. I decided to buy a used iphone on craigslist and activate it. Once activated, my eligibility on AT&Ts website immediatly changed from ineligible to eligible. After playing around with this iphone, my girlfriend wanted one too so we got her a secondhand iphone and activated. Her eligibility changed as well. At this point, I think we may both just hang on to the old device and upgrade later. We just wanted to have the ability to upgrade.

Early Termination Fee?

Let's say that you are not eligible for an upgrade but, there is always an early termination fee correct?

If you are willing to pay 199.00 for an iphone and an unsubsidized phone is 399.00, then you are looking at a 200.00 difference.

So my question is this. How much is an early termination fee? I know ATT went to court with other cell phone carriers a while back about lowering the fees but, I am still not sure what the price would be?

If the price is under 150.00 for an early termination, it might be worth it to pay the extra 150.00 or so just to get your hands on that beautiful machine!

What the Heck?

I just called the local AT&T to check iPhone availability... And she said I was not eligible for the discounted pricing.

I've had my AT&T account active since August of last year with the 1st gen iPhone, and she said I had to wait until 2009 to get the discounted price. WTH?

AT&T was doing maintenance on their servers all day today. It should be corrected by now, if not, shortly.

The CSR's get the same data feed as you do in the OLAM and very few of them are cognizant of the special upgrade eligibility policy regarding the iPhone so they will simply feed you nonsense.

Bottom line, if you have activated an iPhone data/calling plan on your account prior to midnight tonight, you should be eligible for a subsidized upgrade come tomorrow morning - and assuming they have finished maintenance on the servers, it should reflect that on the OLAM immediately after you activate.

I bought a used iPhone off eBay two days ago. I was initially ineligible, immediately eligible after activating, and then ineligible again while the servers were being sweeped. Now I'm eligible again, I've confirmed via CSR's and AT&T staff.

If they thought it was cost-effective to close this loophole they would've. They're still getting your $200 and 24 months of payments - you're hardly ripping them off.

If that's true, it would be awesome. If you really want to be a pal, would you go to an at&t store and see if that really is the case? Because if you could confirm that, I think it would make a big difference for a lot of people.

At this point it wouldn't matter because it would have to be done prior to July 11th. AT&T and Apple have posted that people that activated iPhones before July 11th would be eligible.

All said and done

Now that the fray is passed, I want to buy an iPhone 2G. A friend has agreed to sell me his for $100. He switched over to the 3G.

Will I get the old pricing from AT&T? Can I set it up using an iTunes hookup at home? Do I just pop in my Sim from my Nokia? (AT&T)

Or do I have to brave the reps at the AT&T store?

And next January I will upgrade to the latest, greatest at that time.
