just got this email from them:

I got the same email after trying. I put a random UK number though, and if that fails I'll try and ask a friend in the UK for a real number to try. If this works then I'll be extremely happy, if not, then oh well :/

My network in the UK, O2, unlocks iPhones for free since they don't care what you do with the phone so long as you honour your contract.

To put in an unlock request, there is a form on their website. The interesting thing is I have heard of people on AT&T and other networks having their phones successfully unlocked using this form. It seems they don't check the phone is locked to O2 - they just send the IMEI to Apple and it gets unlocked.

If it works, after around a week or two, when you sync your phone over USB a message will be displayed saying your iPhone is unlocked. Then you have a legit, factory unlocked iPhone with no need to JB.

Just enter Pay Monthly, Apple iPhone, and then a UK mobile number, e.g. 07960XXXXXX. It doesn't seem to matter what answers you give for the security questions - they don't seem to check, although if you want an example of some real answers, give a last bill date of earlier this month with an amount of £35 on tariff iPhone 35 (18 month).

just tried it. put in a fake number. received the automated email. hopefully this works. i hate how we have to do run around methods to get an unlock.

I've been following the "congrats, your phone is unlocked" thread about people who buy unlocked, off contract phones from Apple Stores and trying to find a workaround for myself who needs to buy an AT&T subsidized phone. So far I've thought of:
1. Pleading with the Apple Store employee to be a pal and not activate my phone at the store and pretty much giving me an unlocked phone (I forgot what exactly is done when I buy a subsidized phone though). I figure trying to get the Apple Store to unlock my phone holds more hope than talking to AT&T drones.
2. Buying a black iPhone and renewing my contract at Best Buy. I want a white iPhone though, so I would go to the Apple Store and ask for an off contract white iPhone and ask to exchange my black iPhone, hoping to walk out of the store with an untouched iPhone.

Now, I have no idea how the phone becomes locked during the purchase so these ideas may sound really dumb but do any of them sound like they could work?

DO NOT do it, APPLE gives unlocked iPhone only if you pay FULL Price

until they release the official unlocked iPhones (aka coming weeks) this is only way to get unlocked iPhones, if someone mess the system apple might start flagging this full priced unlocked off contract iPhones.

You could try selling the subsidized phone and use the proceeds towards getting a unlocked phone. I think that would be the best way.

For my earlier post regarding O2.. I have yet to receive that email so I've resubmitted the form again.

Won't work - there was a long thread a while back where people tried. They can tell which IEMIs are not theirs and belong to AT&T.

Can we file a class action suite against ATT or Apple about iPhones still being locked even after honoring the contract?
Why US mobile industry is so ****ing different from other countries?

Normally I think there is way too much abuse of the legal system, but in this case I think it's deserved. Sign me up!

02 emailed be back saying that they could not find my phone number in their system. Can anyone shoot me their 02 number so that I may attempt this request again?

It would be much appreciated. Thanks..

It's not going to work. I had a valid o2 sim in my ultrasn0w unlocked iPhone 4, and they weren't able to unlock that phone. Not sure what would happen if I tried using it in the UK itself.
