How much you wanna bet that Apple only relases the iPhone 4G/HD for new customers until July 7th? That way people who get the iPhone 3GS now (with unlimited usage) can't return it within 30 days for the new one. Hmm - to gamble or not to gamble...

Help!

I still have a 2g iphone with a 20.00 data plan. Im I going to be forced into a capped plan when I upgrade?

Can I just buy the 3g plan with a 2g phone to get locked in to that rate?

From AT&T usage numbers:

65% * 0.1GB = 7 GB
33% * 1.0GB = 33 GB
2% * 5 GB = 10 GB

So the 2% are using about 20% of the bandwidth!

That is crazy!

Tough choice for me. I've never really gone over 500mb/month, averaging about 300mb/month this year, using the phone whenever I want without ever considering data usage. So I'm inclined to save the $5/month, but out of principle I almost want to have the option of "unlimited" just in case. I'm really not sure how a faster phone (processor-wise) will change my browsing habits. Half the time I might have used my 3G I just get too frustrated at how long it takes to load and how cumbersome it is. With a faster processor and more RAM, offering a smoother experience, it's possible my data usage will go up. And with true multitasking, maybe even more streaming of audio and stuff. I can't imagine I will ever go over 1GB/month though (don't plan on ever tethering with the current options).

What I don't get is how you get 2GB/month but need to pay more money just to have the ability to tether. And then it just shares the same 2GB limit?! Why not just give us the sme 2GB/month and "free" tethering so we can use that 2GB however we please. If we go over (and you might/probably will with tethering) then you pay more. Seems like a win for AT&T to make more this way (by people paying $10/gb over) vs offering expensive tethering that almost no one will pay for.

AT&T:

Oh how I can't wait to leave you. The "last straw" scenario has played out too many times. I'm finally ready to pack up all my business.

How about $15 for 200mb AND keep the $30 unlimited? 200mb would be fine for me and I wouldn't mind saving $15/month. AT&T's lame service certainly does not justify any price increases. I would appreciate more options to save some dough. Hey, how about a roll-over data plan?

Wow. No wonder they want to do something about it. 98% of people will save $5 a month. 2% of people are going to be really pissed off, but the funny thing is that most of them are probably illegally tethering anyway. And the result of this action will probably be a better network for everyone.

At first I was pretty pissed about this whole thing, but after looking at data usage history, maybe it's not so bad. The most data I have ever used is 450MB, and the most my wife has ever used is 33MB. Seems like a simple answer; change her plan to the $15/month plan and keep mine the same in case for some strange reason I should ever need that much, all while saving $15/month. Works for me, though YMMV.

The thing that still strikes me as incredibly stupid is this additional fee for tethering. I don't get it. As others have pointed out, data is data, if you have a cap on the total usage what does it matter if I'm using it by tethering or not? Hopefully, (though doubtful) ATT will come to their senses here.

I have a simple question... so if I want to add my wife to the current plan and keep my $30 unlimited (making it a family plan), I should do it before next week?

I have a question about the plans. I have the iPhone 3GS now, we switch over to AT&T in Aug. of 2009. When the new iPhone 4/HD comes out I was going to give my 3GS to my mom, so when doing that can I still have my Unlimited DATA with the new iPhone 4/HD (I don't care about Tethering) and my mom go with the $15(200MB) data plan on the 3GS that I will give her.

Shoot, these caps do it for me. It's over the top. My wife and I were finally going to switch to AT&T but now were gonna wait for Verizon this Fall.

I'm sure I wouldn't go over 2GB/month but just the fear of the limit would make me not enjoy the phone's abilities.

You think ATT will be the only carrier to do this?! Foolish thinking IMO.

You mean the family unlimited? Hmm...good question.

Yes, the familytalk unlimited plan... I was planning on doing it after the announcement so she can get her own iphone, but now I don't know if I should wait anymore...

:D at the fanboys saying this is a good thing. Apple could announce that each iphone purchase comes with a punch in the throat and the response here would be "I need that, what a great change."

All this means is that there won't be any wifi hotspotting with the iPhone OS, which just means Google is going to just continue to own the lame iphone OS.

You gotta figure - AT&T is NOT looking to collect less money or introduce this price plan just to go after those 2%. They haven't revealed yet why they are doing this. I don't think it's because they figure they'll get overage charges by tethering (although they will already be collecting $20/mo) because I just don't see too many people tethering to make up that $5/mo they're losing from every customer who switches.

There's something else that's coming that they're not saying. My guess is the video chat on the next iPhone is gonna suck some bandwidth, but I don't see that becoming so popular that it makes up the difference in overage charges...

Any other guesses?

Why does this change anything for you? You can keep your unlimited plan or choose to move to a cheaper plan.

I suspect the only way you an your ilk will be happy is if they offer free unlimited data with tethering.

I'm not sure. But now I'm looking into it because my brother and I have iPhones but if everyone had data or messaging included as part of the plan that we pay for it would be worth it.

You do realize that Android is going to be subject to more and more carrier restrictions now as they add more things the carriers don't like, right?
