Not to parce words. But that statment from At&t say customers will be able to purchase a new iphone not the next iphone. Because companies rarely acknowledge the existance of an up comming product before its offically announced I bet he is referring to the current iphone 3gs as a new iphone.

The loading of the map or whatever service, yes, but the actual GPS? No. Same thing for the triangulation, no.

This is not a good answer. The correct answer is, on the iPhone, if you choose to do something, anything, you are using data.

A forcibly data capped iPhone makes no sense and AT&T just ruined the iPhone, IMO. I don't care what the usage statistics say.

I have a question about the plans. I have the iPhone 3GS now, we switch over to AT&T in Aug. of 2009. When the new iPhone 4/HD comes out I was going to give my 3GS to my mom, so when doing that can I still have my Unlimited DATA with the new iPhone 4/HD (I don't care about Tethering) and my mom go with the $15(200MB) data plan on the 3GS that I will give her.

Based upon what I have read, yes, you are correct.

He asked about GPS specifically.

I don't see how at&t crippled the iPhone. 3G iPad? Maybe. But the iPhone? No.

Is AT&T making these policy adjustments on the fly? They float this limited data ripoff plan and now they're doing BP like damage control to prevent the massive hemorrhage of existing customers. Unless Lord Jobs is planning to untether himself from AT&T next week and allow multiple carriers for his precious iPhone 4, Prince Schmidt at Googleplex must be salivating at the new iPhone killer known as AT&T.

So why not just keep your unlimited plan?

They announced this now because there won't, sadly, be a VZ phone announcement. To stifle the boos, Jobs can point to lower rates and AT&T will be able to say their network will be less clogged up.

And if they aren't? Jobs said "then they aren"t".

If I could use my fan discount on the cheaper plan I'd switch, but it seems that it's still cheaper for me to keep unlimited.

:D at the fanboys saying this is a good thing. Apple could announce that each iphone purchase comes with a punch in the throat and the response here would be "I need that, what a great change."

All this means is that there won't be any wifi hotspotting with the iPhone OS, which just means Google is going to just continue to own the lame iphone OS.

Wrong. Do some reading first. Here is a qoute from the AP article on yahoo:

"Data usage over Wi-Fi, including AT&T's public Wi-Fi hot spots, will not count toward the limits."

I believe that GPS ephemeris data is obtained via a data connection since it provides a much quicker time to first fix (TTFF). With pre-loaded ephemeris a GPS receiver can obtain a fix in under 10 seconds. Without it the receiver has to wait up to 30 seconds for the GPS satellites to start re-transmitting the ephemeris data and then receive the data itself before obtaining a fix.

He means sharing your cellular data over wifi, not using a hotspot.

No. My bet is Verizon will move to this prcing model for data sooner rather than later.

I suspect the only way you an your ilk will be happy is if they offer free unlimited data with tethering.

How about a reasonable, not so soul-crushingly low, data cap + tethering? Say 5gb? For those of us who like to stream content, 2gb is just too low. I'm specifically thinking of Internet radio, but there's also Netflix, Apple's own upcoming "cloud" iTunes service, and who knows what else in the near future.

I will of course, I mean for new subscribers. Limited (VERY limited) plans don't encourage usage...just the opposite. Everyone will be right back in 1995, where you were afraid to use your damn phone for fear of AT&T charging you out the rear with overage charges.

One thing about this story that seems interesting to me is that I'm sure AT&T is smart and they know that quite a few people might be a tad pissed with these changes. *IF* another carrier was gonna get their stab at the iPhone, officially, I doubt they'd do this change right before it.

I don't know about you all but this just seems like AT&T knows they're in a position to stay exclusive for a while and to me it seems more and more likely that another carrier won't get rights to the iPhone until well into next year or '12.

So, if you want to tether you have to get the new 2GB data plan? Geez.

yeah tethering is a rip off. you need $25 plan, and add another what, $30 to allow tethering. and your data is still capped at 2 gb?

ATT is getting to be as crappy with data caps as Verizon. guess the entire thing is a plan to make sure people can't download movies or more via wireless.

exactly 2 gb is pretty low, especially when people stream alot. but i guess this is the point for ATT, they want to limit usage.

Another $15. And they always had a cap of 5 GB on the iPhone plans.

I Just Got F@cked!!

I just called AT@T and since I have a 2g phone I cannot be grandfathered into the unlimited plan!!!! <<huge string of curse words>>!!!

I can pretty much #!@#ing forget using pandora in the car (already bought the equipment) and the nexflix app is going to have to be a wifi thing only,, why the FU@K would I want to watch a FUC#king move if im at home!! (no wifi anywhere else that I spend any time)

I cant even buy a 3gs and return it after 30 days bc it would cancel the plan and I would lose the grandfather.

AT@ F@CKING T's solution??? Buy the 3gs today and then buy a 4g on ebay after it comes out,,, are you kidding me!!!!

WHY WHY did I not leave my gf's phone on Sprint?? I dont have a contract on the Iphone but I have to keep hers. Maybe I will have a phone with A@@ holes r us' and one with Sprint or VW or ***** use a telegraph!... less frustrating

I am not too bothered with the data caps -- we knew this was coming. Almost none of us go over 2GB. However, as network speeds get faster and data-intensive applications get more popular (like video calling, netflix streaming, etc.), I hope the caps are reevaluated.

What really pisses me off is this insane $20 a month fee to give you the pleasure of using your same 2GB on another device. Oh gee, can I use my data allotment faster, gee thanks let me pay you for the privilege! WTF

Tethering without extra data should cost NOTHING. This is a deal breaker for me, and will cause me to jump ship to another network if and when they get the iPhone (presuming of course they have a more reasonable tethering policy).

At first I was a little taken back by this news...
After all, I am a huge opponent to cellular and cable pricing for data use.
I think both TWC and AT&T charge way too much for the "George Jetson Syndrome".

BUT....
After I cooled my thoughts down to a civil man I did some home work on our bill.

Last month I used 58MB of data and my wife used 248MB (she obviously has nothing to do at work all day long :p ). Most of my surfing is done on WiFi networks, but I also have the original EDGE-only iPhone so I don't really pull it out in the wild unless I REALLY need something. This will most likely change when I get the 4G iPhone though.

I will stick with the current $30 plan for 2 months after getting the 4G iPhone and re-examine my personal usage. If I can stay well under 2GB with using the iChatAV (if not restricted to WiFi) and GPS maps features then I will switch down to the 2GB package and look at adding the tethering when I upgrade to a new MacBook Pro later on this year as I expand my freelance business.

Damn!! And I thought Telstra were screwing us Aussies up the but!!

This sucks - especially the bait and switch iPad plan!

Of course it is, where the heck have you been?

I think it will be a week after, unless they release the final SDK this week to developers. There are a lot of apps that need to be updated to work right on OS 4. Apple will need some time to approve them before the new phone ships.

I used Pandra for ~10 hours last weekend in my car. I it was about 150 mg of data. Now it was on Edge, so that may make a difference?

Right, I get that, but the kinds of figures I'd heard discussed prior to this were on the order of 5gb, and the concern was to prevent known types of really heavy usage, like peer-to-peer services. I could also see AT&T wanting to limit tethering via jailbreak. But I don't get adopting a cap that's going to cut into legitimate products, approved by Apple, that stream data.

For example, I'm currently at 2.1 gigs with 3 days to go on my month, and it's because of Sirius/XM. I use it approximately 20 hours a week (that's 4 hours a day for 5 days, at work). That does not strike me as excessive usage, yet my choices are: (1) grandfather, but don't use tethering (which is actually OK with me personally, but probably won't be for a significant number of others); (2) pay quite a bit more for data than I am now; or (3) curtail the use of a service that I pay for anyway and enjoy greatly.

I would think AT&T could make a data cap that's high enough for the people using a reasonable amount of streaming services and still protect their network, rather than do it the way they did it, which apparently was to look at the figures and decide that 2% of unsatisfied customers was a reasonable cost to pay to reduce further costs of building out more network.
