Our 21 and 25 yr olds are still on our family plan. Their both in college and only work during the summer (which is here).
This could be a very easy fix. If your parents have a different phone or iPhone that can be upgraded. Upgrade their phone, swap sim cards. Done. I've done this with the 2g to 3g and will do it again by upgrading my wife's 2g to 3Gs and giving her the 3G I have. Every year, ability to upgrade as she doesn't care about having the latest tech.
So, how they changed it so that people that purchased an iPhone on launch could upgrade? Yeah, it's not really the story. The story is that you have to have atleast 100$ a month charged to your phone specifically in order to be eligible and have bought a phone on launch. SO my situation, still on family plan since my parents make more than me...thanks mom and dad...because my phone particularly only costs 10$ a month on the family plan...I am not eligible. Way to go AT&T! Bite me.
For those that dont get it it, I could care less about the phone.
iPhone, shm-iPhone....Its about being honest and respected.
ATT is being completely honest. You signed a contract for two years, they shouldn't keep paying $400 for you to upgrade every time you feel like you want a new phone.
You really think att pays 400$ on top of everyone's 200 for their phone'? Yeah, no.

Wow, time to let the birds leave the nest.
Why the hell do they only work during summer? I have a full time class load, work full time, and run my own company on the side.
If they can't handle college and at least a part-time job, they'll never make it in the real world.

(Oh - and did you happen to attend college? Their ≠ they're.)
Yea they do, through your monthly contract... you really though the phone only costed $100-200 or whatever
I remember an article hear stating the cost of the phone is only 100-150$ in parts if I my memory serves me correct. I'm not saying you're wrong but I've never seen anything stating AT&T's price, and if they were to pay 600$ for a phone, I doubt they're going to sell it for their cost to a non AT&T customer.
