I have a similar complaint. I pay about $170/mo for two phones. One is eligible for upgrade tomorrow, the other in March. I'd rather both be in december (or now) but however it goes I think it should be more equal than 12 months for one phone and 21 for the other.

Family Plan

Our 21 and 25 yr olds are still on our family plan. Their both in college and only work during the summer (which is here).

I was on the family plan until I was 23. Then I graduated from college and the iPhone came out, so I ported my # over to AT&T from Alltel and started my own plan.

The only reason I left my family plan was to get the iPhone.

yeah i was gonna say, my parents still pay for my plan (im 19 and live at home in the summer) and i have a friend who is 25 and his parents paid his up until his phone broke, now he just uses the one his work gives him. he was out of the house and had a job and they still paid his because they wanted him to. what does everyone here expect, that if parents want to pay, kids are going to say, nah i'd rather get plowed in the a$$ by my phone company

that said i dont agree with the OP's whining

This could be a very easy fix. If your parents have a different phone or iPhone that can be upgraded. Upgrade their phone, swap sim cards. Done. I've done this with the 2g to 3g and will do it again by upgrading my wife's 2g to 3Gs and giving her the 3G I have. Every year, ability to upgrade as she doesn't care about having the latest tech.

That's very smart. If I had a wife I'd probably do that.

So, how they changed it so that people that purchased an iPhone on launch could upgrade? Yeah, it's not really the story. The story is that you have to have atleast 100$ a month charged to your phone specifically in order to be eligible and have bought a phone on launch. SO my situation, still on family plan since my parents make more than me...thanks mom and dad...because my phone particularly only costs 10$ a month on the family plan...I am not eligible. Way to go AT&T! Bite me.

Well...In At&t's defense, all other networks require you to have about 20 months with a phone before you are eligible to upgrade. Why should they just bend the rules so everyone can have the hot new device? It's already nice enough of them to offer a super early upgrade to some people. Every time a new blackberry comes out, customers don't huff and pout to get the newest phone out there. They wait until their upgrade time. It sucks, but it's the way it is. I'm having to pay $150 to get out of my Verizon contract to get the iphone.

For those that dont get it it, I could care less about the phone. I dont care for the companies that put an advertisement out there with the fine print....oh wait, what fine print?

iPhone, shm-iPhone....Its about being honest and respected. Not oh hey we fixed things to make you happy. How many people do you think will wait in line tomorrow to be disappointed?

Was I complaining about 10$ a month? I'm pretty sure I put a thanks mom and dad in there?

and for those calling me a kid, 3 tour veteran now out of the service going to school full time for mechanical engineering and working a full time job...pretty sure I'm atleast SOMEWHAT grown up.

Oh, you could care less? That's a relief. I almost thought you didn't care at all!

ATT is being completely honest. You signed a contract for two years, they shouldn't keep paying $400 for you to upgrade every time you feel like you want a new phone.

And by the way, you might want to take a business class in addition to your mechanical engineering classes.

You really think att pays 400$ on top of everyone's 200 for their phone'? Yeah, no.

Yes. That's how subsidies work. The iPhone costs $600 and $700. When you sign a two-year contract they give you a "loan" for $400 which they will recoup over the life of the 2-year contract.

Wow, time to let the birds leave the nest.

Why the hell do they only work during summer? I have a full time class load, work full time, and run my own company on the side.

If they can't handle college and at least a part-time job, they'll never make it in the real world.

(Oh - and did you happen to attend college? Their ≠ they're.)

How "well" are your studies going? Or are you a Lib Arts major? I don't knock him, hell when I was in high school I paid for car insurance, cell phone, clothes , etc... once I went to college, parents picked up the cell phone bill (family plan). Not because I couldn't pay for it, they just did. Recently went back to a separate account so I could get an iPhone....

im sorry i find this thread kind of dumb.... if you can't afford the iPhone don't buy it or wait until you have the money to.. whether it's 199 or 699!

Get a life and stop just insulting people. Just because your situation is different doesn't mean you're somehow better than anyone. Are we supposed to be impressed that you have class, work full time, and run a company on the side? I've known plenty of idiots who have done all three and they all happen to be less judgemental and polarizing than you are.

And here come your credentials! Wow! You're a brilliant young scholar who has it all going for him. Your attitude is top notch, your generic schools even more impressive, and your conduct is so becoming for a future professional in the workplace. Thumbs up to you.

Yea they do, through your monthly contract... you really though the phone only costed $100-200 or whatever

I remember an article hear stating the cost of the phone is only 100-150$ in parts if I my memory serves me correct. I'm not saying you're wrong but I've never seen anything stating AT&T's price, and if they were to pay 600$ for a phone, I doubt they're going to sell it for their cost to a non AT&T customer.

Maybe in raw parts cost, but IIRC I remember reading something on the order of $1000 is actually the cost of the phone, which is subsidized through the contract... that's why they make you sign it for a couple of years.

Wow, by the time I posted this there were so many more postings, the meaning got lost :).
