That's the problem. The website said I was good to upgrade with a $18 fee and pay $499 for the 32GB like last year. I sold my 3GS only to find out 2 weeks later they changed their minds.

Did you print out the page? Probably not, but if you had, you could definitely get something done, I’d think.

Perhaps Photoshop? :) I’m kidding.

Oh, I forgot you canceled. That’s the problem, IMO.

are you using a different phone now? If so, that phone is showing on their system now and as a non iphone owner, you dont qualify for the early upgrade.

go on their site and see what phone shows up as what your using.

WOW! You may have just solved the riddle! I'm using a go phone with my iPhone sim card in it. I wonder if I put my sim back into an iPhone if my upgrade will come back?

Great find...

I'll test this tomorrow and if it works I'll be sure to make a new thread and help out others that MAY HAVE done something similar.

Thanks

I know it sucks, but at the time you had the early upgrade, the iPhone 4 wasn't out correct? Couldn't the case be made that you jumped the gun a little early, before really knowing the details of the new iPhone. It does suck and all of that, but at the same time, you probably knew that wasn't guaranteed for sure until all the details of the pricing for the new iPhone actually came out.

As for face time, wouldn't there be other ways to do video chat? Or is it harder/more expensive?

I paid $500 last year for my 3GS and my early upgrade eligibility isn't until Feb 2011.

I'm on a family plan with my mom. I was wondering- couldn't I simply preorder the phone and act like my mom, who has been eligible for an upgrade for a long time, was the one getting the iPhone 4 for only $300? And then just activate it in iTunes under my phone number...
Yes, you can do this and AT&T even gave it a name last year: Upgrade Swap.

It takes a couple of simple extra steps but is easy to do and you don't even have to "act like your mom". You can pre-order from Apple or AT&T.

Just make sure your mom understands that she is getting a new two-year service commtment with AT&T and her line will now have an ETF of $325.

You're 100% correct. I did jump the gun trying to get a better deal for the 3GS' I was selling. If what you said is the reason then I have "eff'd" myself and have no one else to blame.

I'm hoping it's because I changed phones while waiting for the iPhone 4 release and "my wireless" doesn't think I'm an iPhone user anymore even tho I'm paying like one!

Did they SAY you could cancel your account and sign up again? I was under the impression, if you canceled your account, you wouldn't be able to sign up for another contract for 6-12 months.

well depending on who's name it is under they can just do it under the other persons

I sold my iphone and i put the sim in my work blackberry to set up call forwarding. On the site it now shows up as a blackberry (the line only ever had an iphone and I pay for iphone data too) and that line is not eligible. To me its not a big deal since I was going to get rid of this number anyway and now I'll just add a line and cancel this one out. I'll save around 50 going this route.

Why can't you cancel and sign right back up? What's the problem with that? You paid to get out the contract right?

Hope you're right.
Im due for an upgrade on February 2011 and would gladly pay the $399 early upgrade but its only showing me the option of paying full price.
Why is that?
Will that change on the 15th where you can preorder or am I stuck paying full price?
Anyone got any solid info on this issue?
Thanks.

for me it maybe different because I am on a family plan, but my wife is eligible now and mine is in 2/11, but I can do the reduced price upgrade for 399 because after a year of having the 32 GB version I used not that much space so it makes more sense for me to go the 16gb version.

I just checked the site and since I just changed out her sim from her 3gs to a crappy nokia it does show that, however the data plan did NOT change I still have the 30 bucks unlimited.

I went onto the site a manually changed my crap nokia back to my iPhone. Checked the upgrade and it's still a no go...

I'll call them tomorrow and explain to them that their system took me off and hopefully they'll change it back.

Your manual change of device has no impact equipment upgrade eligiblity. It is just an online aid to customize the OLAM Help tools.

Everytime your phone registers with the system it reports the device that your SIM is active in, it also has a history... :(

The DER system (Device Eligibility Restrictions) is used to display the valid features based on the active device, so if you had the iPhone, did you keep the iPhone data plan and Visual Voicemail?

I am now seeing the 'no commitment' prices only as well. I checked a few days ago and this was different. (Ex. $399 for 16GB 3G S, $499 for 32GB 3G S).

I sold my 3GS and used two phones for a month, but I still see iPhone data plan intact and eligible for upgrade. Both phones (nexus one and motorockr) are unlocked. Maybe that's the key. If it's unlocked, AT&T system still consider the official AT&T phone on your account is your last official AT&T device which is the iPhone.

You can sign up for a new contract & phone at any time. But, the unlimited plan won't be an option for any new account.

Yeah, they want to charge me the $599 price too. :) I am out at $599. Not worth it to me.

Not with a new contract. If you buy a whole new contract you qualify for the discounted price. Of course that means you're subject to the news terms - higher ETF and no unlimited plan.

The problem lies in the conflicting facts that Apple upgrades the iPhone every year while AT&T has 2-year contracts. The confusion then ensues and snowballs into cellphone hell.

2-year contracts need to be changed to 1-year recurring contracts.

They used to offer 1 year contracts. But the subsidy wasn't as good. So few used them. I don't think it would change much.

The only way I can do that is if I get a new line and cancel my own. They will not upgrade my early upgrade date to June 24th. They said I can get it on November 20th for $399. Screw them. I mind as well wait for iPhone 5.
