AT&T has launched a new Father's Day deal for the next few days, offering new and existing customers who purchase an iPhone X as an upgrade or a new line a second iPhone X at no additional cost as long as it's for a new line.
Customers will need to finance both iPhone X devices via AT&T Next 30 or AT&T Next Every Year, but within three billing cycles they will begin receiving bill credits totaling up to $999.99 spread out over 30 months. Tax on the full cost of both phones is due at the time of purchase, and the deal runs through June 19.

So, the get one get one free is bullocks, you have to pay tax on both of them so the second one is NOT free.

As for providers in the states, they suck big time.

Technically, AT&T is providing the second one at no extra cost. The buyer's state, if it has a sales tax, requires the buyer to pay sales tax and requires AT&T to collect and remit that tax to the state.

While this concept may be foreign to you if you don't live in the US, it's pretty common thanks to how our tax systems work. Folks here know what the advert means even if it seems contradictory to someone who doesn't live here. Blame the 45 states with sales tax which apply that tax to what otherwise ought not to be taxed. You'll find the same thing with any carrier which does a financing/credit, not just AT&T.

Waiting for the BOGO offer on the iPhone "neXt" on both VZW and ATTWS. I like the X in form, but opted to pass when it failed the Telstra Blue Tick test - I need decent rural reception, I get calls and data with my ATTWS 6S when my GF's X gets "No Service", I started bringing my company's extra 6S so she can pop a SIM in it. Out of the last groups of iPhones since the 6 series, the 7/7+/8+/X failed the BT tests that serve my needs well and hopefully one of the next handsets will fly through. My 2¢...

They have these deals every other week. Always needs a new line in the fine print.
If you don't understand the deal, forget about it. I doubt there are many out there that would bit on this offer with the latest and best due out in about 90 days. Grab a burner and wait until September.

We may be three months from new models but history shows last years model sells for $100 less than the current one come September. So this is still $400 off each phone.

And I highly doubt new models will be leaps and bounds better at lower pricing.

I need to add a line this year so this is a good deal.

It’s like getting an 2017/18 iPhone X for the price of a 2018 SE.

I don't really understand the logistics of these deals, at least as they're advertised. It only works for people whose dads do not currently have a cell phone plan and yet want an iPhone X, and want to share your account and data allotment? For moms whose husbands do not currently have a phone or service?

I mean, if it was an unlocked iPhone that you could just give away, then great! But... I wouldn't really want anyone to gift me a phone that also came with a new line on their account and a monthly payment. Just seems like a hassle and now you're on someone else's plan? Or am I misunderstanding how it's supposed to work?

People have all sorts of different situations based on their station in life. I added my mom and MIL to our family plans after my dad and father in law passed in back to back years. It was easier to add them to our plans and let them keep their out of state numbers then continue on the plan they are on.

They both actually ended up getting BOGO phones in previous deals that essentially gave us a hardware credit to pay for their devices.

And it's not like it's required you use it for 'dad's', it's just the holiday this month. Like someone else posted, they run BOGOs pretty much all year and throw all sorts of reasons for it.

This isn't difficult, just need to think outside of your particular box.

Consider a family with a kid that's now old enough to need a phone. Add a new line. Mom and dad get new iphone X, kid gets hand-me down phone.

Couple decides to get a family plan instead of two individual plans. One of them has an ex that can't let go and decides to get a new phone number.

That's two off the top of my head. Lots of other possible situations.

Thank you for your in-depth analysis. I can also confirm that the iPhone X has a screen, wireless radios, various processing chips, and a few buttons.

Ladies and gentlemen, please join us next time for another classic episode of "Why did this need to be said?"
You are welcome. I'm here to help.
