Does anyone have an answer to this yet?

Just spoke with AT&T... Firstly, the $40 data charge does not take into account the $25 discount for having the mobile share (10gb) plan. So the charge is accurate (it will show the discount on your bill).

Secondly, they had trouble finding my preorder for one of my lines. The manager got involved and basically the answer was that they won't have complete & accurate information in their internal systems for the preorders until tomorrow (24 hours later). It's kinda crazy, but I guess it's not completely surprising with the insane volume of orders coming in.

Anyone else think the NEXT plan is a rip off?

Currently my wife and I are sharing the 10gb plan for $130 a month before taxes. Everyone knows that is $100 for the data and $15 for each line. If you go with the old method of paying, say $199 for a 16gb 6, then you are paying $40 a month for the 6's line. So it would be $100 for the data, $15 for my wife's line and $40 for my line, which makes our bill $155 a month before taxes.

If I get the 6 through NEXT we will still have the $100 for data, $15 for each line, plus the $27.05 a month for the phone, making our bill $157.05 before taxes and that is the for the cheapest phone. Unless I am missing something with NEXT it does not seem like that great of an option.

Except when you pay off the phone you don't have the cost anymore. Or you can keep that and upgrade every year/2 years. It's a 0% loan that you choose.

I got the same issue... It added a $40 per month data charge for some reason. I'm already on a mobile share (10gb) plan so I'm not sure why they are adding this. On hold with ATT for 30 mins so far..........
This is what it states on my order page regarding the monthly charge which is my installment payment and the $40 mobile share payment:

**Your monthly charges include the AT&T NextSM or tablet installment amount, which is the amount you pay for select phones or devices without a 2-year service commitment. The price of the device is divided into monthly installments, depending on your selection. By selecting this option, you are not making a term commitment for service, but you will be responsible for the remaining installment payments for the phone or device, which will become immediately due if you terminate service before all installments are paid. Total monthly charges do not include applicable taxes, State and Federal Universal Service charges, Regulatory Cost Recovery Fees, and gross receipt surcharges. Visit http://www.wireless.att.com/cell-phone-service/additionalcharges/ to view estimates of these discretionary charges for your area. Total charges, including final discretionary charges, will be included in your monthly bill. Additional corporate discounts may apply and appear on your monthly bill as appropriate. If you already have AT&T wireless service and are keeping your existing voice or data plan, feature, mobile application, and/or wireless access option, then the monthly fees you already pay is not reflected in the shopping cart.

Not only that if you decide to keep the phone it turns out to be cheaper than buying a unlocked one from Apple (launch day price).

i.e. att 6+ 128GB after 20 or 24 months is $949, the unlocked price on the apple site is $1079.

Not sure where the $130 goes.

So, why am I going to be charged $40 a month in addition to the NEXT cost of the phone? I have the 10GB Mobile Share plan.

$40 - $25 discount for using NEXT = $15. (which is effectively the smartphone cost per line)

Not $40.

You're not, they are just showing you what the total monthly charges will be going forward on that line. It's really going to be:

Next installment price + $40 data - $25 discount (shown on bill)

It's not an ADDITIONAL $40 on top of what you're already paying. It IS the $40 (minus discount) that you're paying now...

Oh, well they should have worded it better, I guess.

So, I will only be paying the NEXT installment price extra every month? It scared me when, instead of the ~$42 dollars extra per month, it said I would owe $82 extra per month?

Im in California and so the estimated tax charge on the email confirmation was just that, an estimation?
Even in California, you have varying tax rates by county and locality. Los Angeles County is 9% while Riverside is, I believe 7.75%. That said, I think there were likely some glitches in the system that's why your numbers were off.

people are going to freak out over that one. It would be a little more clear if they showed the discount upfront and showed what you were currently paying. Then people would see the 'addtional cost' isn't as high it looks on the order page.

The confirmation email shows the email price with the discount.

Either way, it's always been this way. Even before Next, it used to show me a weird plan price that didn't reflect what I actually paid (as an additional line) in a family plan.

Thanks for clearing that up!!!:)

You're missing something. The $199 up front payment and $40 upgrade fee. Still, it's hard to tell what the better deal is with AT&T - A lot depends on how many lines you have etc.

EDIT: Ran the numbers and they work out for you.

2 year deal:
$199 + $40 upgrade fee + $25/month line increase for 24 months = $839

Next deal:
No down payment, no upgrade fee, $27.05 for 24 months = $649

Your savings with Next: $190 over the 2 years.

like what they said ...

the fine print does say that these charges aren't final. once you get the final charge it should show the right charges.

i ordered both on apple and att.com.

i am also in Cali and got the iphone 6 plus ...

-apple got the charges right (which was only the tax for the phone ~$60
-att.com i am not sure where they got the amount but yes it was ~ $107

to add ... will be getting one phone on 9/19 is awesome (the one ordered from apple) ... while my att order which was just 15 mins after, the est shipping is 10/31-11/11 ><

I'm experiencing the same thing. I preordered the iPhone 6 64 on the NEXT plan and got charged $117 for "estimated taxes." I'm also in California.

I hope the final tax is right. I haven't bothered to call or chat with AT&T yet.

Does anyone know whether the tax is calculated based on where the store you purchase from is, or based on your billing address?

AT&T is not collecting the tax, your local government is. AT&T is just acting as the collection arm of the government for taxation. AT&T in turn has to keep track of the taxes collected and remit the collected taxes to the treasury on time - all of which costs them time and money. AT&T may just be adding these taxation related processing & overhead costs into the "taxes" part of your receipt..
