I went to the AT&T store today and paid off my iPhone 6 Plus so that now my options are open for whatever happens in September with the release of the new iPhones. I had been on the NEXT 12 plan and had just one more payment to go before being totally eligible without payment to trade in my current iPhone in order to get the new one, but there seems to be confusion and uncertainty as to how everything will work out and I want to be able to get my new iPhone at the Apple store on Launch Day or shortly thereafter. It occurred to me, too, that Apple, too, takes trade-ins on iPhones, and that is what I did last year. So my plan is to get the new phone at the Apple store and sign up for a new NEXT plan that day.

Yeah, I'm sure a lot of people are confused about how everything is gonna work out, but I'm sure for such a big release apple must be working things out with each carrier. I am also confused because I want to buy the next iPhone outright and I don't even know if it will be possible. I've always purchased my phones with my carrier, but this year it's a little bit different. I don't wanna buy the T-mobile version, I just want to be able to purchase a Verizon iPhone outright and get it over with.

9/5 EDIT: Apple came through and replaced my broken iPhone 6 on the 1st. AT&T told me a bunch of BS which I believed until I called them a second time today to clarify the upgrade date. It mysteriously went from a week to 10/28/2015 even though I was supposively out of contract.

I found out AT&T 100% $*(#)@ me on the upgrade and several other things, so I closed my account. Again.

Happily, I have the Jitterbug phone I ordered when the original iP6 went boom. So the original plan to roll with a flip phone and a different Apple portable device is finally in motion as it should have been after AT&T ripped me off with my iPhone 5 trade in a year ago.

I'll be selling the perfectly good iP6 whenever my account is paid off and it's unlocked.

If you are not currently on AT&T next but, you are an existing AT&T customer do I have to buy the phone at AT&T or can I buy it from Apple and during the signup process upgrade to the NEXT?

how does the next upgrade process work with using a "shared upgrade"? I would like to use someone else's upgrade on my account but they only have a 5s 16gb and I have a 6 64gb. How does this work with the pay off or trade in? Would I get more credit trading my phone in? Can I still pre-order?

So did you just have to make one last payment on the phone of $20 to $30? I am thinking about doing NEXT 12 myself and am curious how this works.

No, I had to make the total payoff for my iPhone 6 Plus, which was something like $427.00..... If I had waited until the new iPhones were released I could have simply traded my current iPhone in and not had to pay anything additional, but I decided that at least this year there was going to be too much confusion and uncertainty around everything, so felt that the better choice for me to was to simply pay off the darned phone and then that would give me options when the new ones are released. I'll probably sign up for a new NEXT plan at the Apple store when I buy my new iPhone 6s Plus.....
