Yes, I was referencing the iPhone 5! Right now we don't care about other AT&T devices.

Sure you walk into and AT&T store tomorrow and buy most devices at the No Contract price. However, not for an iPhone 5!

Dave

Dave i assume you are an att employee? i was not aware of this information and i don't think the general public on this forum know, unless I'm missing something

I will call my local att store and find out tomorrow. thanks for the heads up!

We'll see. I'll find out tomorrow. Maybe if I explain the situation they will just let me pay the $450 subsidy and unlock my Apple order (doubtful), or (more likely) let the second order go through. I'm not sure why AT&T would care. I could have bought any other phone the day before to re-up my contract.

My Apple order is already "preparing for shipment" so I think that one's pretty safe. If there is any risk that keeping the second order will cause AT&T to kick out the Apple order, I'll just cancel the AT&T order and wait until the lines die down. If last year is any indication, Apple retail stores will sell the full-priced AT&T version no questions asked, and they will be unlocked (even before the official "unlocked" versions go on sale).

Let us know what you found out from AT&T... :p

Hey Dave I have a 4s and my upgrade will be eligible in May. I plan on purchasing my 5 no commitment on Friday at an AT&T store. Are you stating they won't allow this? I am apart of a family plan.

i was able to pre-order my 5 with no-commitment pricing thru the apple site on thursday night/friday morning.

yep. I'm not eligible for any type of discount on my line. I believe whatever discount you have is what you will pay for the phone thru the apple site

Ok yeah that's the problem for me. I am no longer in contract with AT&T as of July and I want to keep it that way (i.e. I want to purchase the phone at no commitment pricing)
Thanks for the info, though :)

So far nothing. I can't get through as it kicks out all calls "due to unusually high call volume." I'm guessing it's a credit card issue. They attempted to charge my card yesterday and today and my card company declined, even though I specifically called them up yesterday and the operator created a log that AT&T would be making a charge.

I probably shouldn't have used a card that I hadn't used for a while. Anyway, it sounds like they will actually process the order if I can call them to tell them to put the charge through again.

So i think, if they actually process the 2nd order... and revert your contract to month to month after you return the 1st phone, you should, theoretically, be able to call them up and ask for unlock... since you purchase it at full price and you will have the receipt to prove it.

Keep us updated here brother KPOM!!

That's what I'm thinking as well. However, I eventually need to get through to them to tell them to put the charge through again. Every hour pushes me further and further back in that line, and I want to get that 2nd phone before October 14th (I'm not taking any chances as to when the 30 day rescission period ends as far my contract commitment)!

I'm on the same boat. My AT&T contract ended back in July from my iPhone 4. Last November, I ordered a factory unlocked iPhone 4S from Apple website and swapped the microSIM card. Now, I rather have an iPhone 5 at no commitment price.

When I got through to the operator, she attempted to put through the charge, but then I think the fact that the Apple order had gone through caused it to fail, as Dave006 predicted. I didn't want to risk my Apple order getting canceled so I didn't press to push the pending AT&T order through again. Well, I guess I can check the store stock before October 14th and see if I can get my no-commitment one from an Apple retail store after the initial rush.

At least I got double confirmation that my Apple order is on the way. :)

Interesting find.

So I will be going to Apple Store afterall to check on no commitment pricing. If they can't do that then I will just return the phone next week and wait until the unlocked version came out on Apple Online Store.

Of course, I could have just had an operator who didn't realize what was going on. Note that afterwards, I checked the UPS tracking site (using my Apple order number as the reference number to track) and saw that my Apple order has been scanned into UPS' system and arrived at the dock in ZhengZhou, China with a scheduled 9/21/12 delivery!

I am in the same boat as you guys. I find it irritating you MUST buy a subsidized phone through the apple store if you are eligible.

AT&T should offer a mechanism to pay the subsidy/ETF any time you want to end the contract and get the phone unlocked without canceling service.

I could cancel service and then sign up again, but I'd have to sign back up with a contract and new phone number, which is unacceptable.

I have 30 days to get my hand on a no-commitment phone and then return the one I have. That just creates supply chain overhead for Apple, so I'm surprised that's the option they give me.

I think the carriers want Apple to make it as difficult as possible. They want to sign on as many people as they can onto 2 year contracts. Apple probably goes along with it because they are signing commitments from each of these carriers, plus the carriers don't put any branding or bloatware like they do on other phones.

That's probably why they release the official unlocked versions a month or so later. I'm going to see if I can get a full-priced AT&T model from the stores after the initial rush. Hopefully by October 10th or so the initial rush has died down, but unfortunately the NYC stores are always crowded. Last year I think they kept the reservation system going for almost a month. Plus, I think more people caught onto the AT&T loophole. In Canada they are selling unlocked phones only online, not in stores, at least to start.

If you're travelling to Europe, and have an unlocked iPhone 5 from AT&T, you won't be able to use it for LTE, as the frequencies that the AT&T version is compatible with only works in US and Canada.

You will have wide 3G access though.

Buying Wifi would be cheaper there anyways
