So I ordered the iphone yest. morning at 940AM thru at&t and got a confirmation email with a ref. #. I just called at&t to make sure my order is in their system and ITS NOT. He said the ref. # didn't show up on their computers. I dont kno wtf to do. When I check my order status it still says "processing" so I dunno what that means.

Hm, by 'ref number' do you mean order number? Is that what you gave him?

I placed my first preorder and the AT&T site accepted it and confirmed the transaction was through. I waited for a confirmation email but didn't get it. Instead, a few minutes after the order was placed, I got an email saying that "Unfortunately, we were either unable to verify the information you provided or you have exceeded the number of lines of service that we allow customers to purchase online. As a result, your order has been canceled." I thought it was strange since I was just upgrading our phone lines (we were up for upgrade) and following the process on the site. My credit card info was all current too.

I placed the order two more times and both times got the order canceled email. But here's where things got strange. If I log into my AT&T account it now shows that I'm not available for an upgrade until next year and my wife not until 2012. So it's like we've already upgraded. And also if I go and search for "order status" under my cell number there is an order that comes up for two iPhones 32gb just like I ordered. The thing is that the order number is different from all of the order numbers that were previously canceled. I can't view any other info on it other then that it is "in progress."

I think I'm probably in line to get what I ordered in some strange way but who knows. They've already charged my card for the amount so I'm assuming the order was placed. Just a strange, messed up day yesterday, man.

I've never understood why people would order from AT&T over Apple.

I walked into an Apple store (no waiting) the day after launch and bought the 2G. For the 3G and 3GS I bought from AT&T. Both times I was about the 20th person in a short line (wait time of less than 10 minutes). People were coming over from the Apple Store a block away because of the crowds. AT&T hasn't failed me yet. I got the "same" phone and assistance with AT&T account stuff due to a FAN discount. However, this time (for the first time) I ordered from Apple and am having it shipped to my house. <fingers crossed>

Also, I was again about the 20th person in line at Best Buy and walked out with an iPad on launch day. So I guess when you're in line on the 24th, look for about the 20th person and it will likely be me! :D

I ordered from AT&T in-store yesterday because I was setting up a brand new FAN account with a family plan. Then last night I got an email saying this:

Thank you for ordering iPhone 4 from AT&T. Your device has been reserved. Today was the busiest sales day in our history. Because of the incredible volume of orders we received, there is a slight chance that some customers may receive their devices between June 25 and June 28. Rest assured, we are doing all we can to ship devices to customers for delivery on the 24th. You do not need to take any action at this point.

So who knows if I'll get my two iPhones on the 24th even though that's what we were told at the store.

I'm glad this is happening, I have read many morons on here saying they ordered 5-6 phones yesterday. SOme people are just greedy. Business accounts can wait until the end of July to replace all their lines.

Who knows? I just called AT&T to ask why there is an $18 charge on my invoice and that I thought that was waived and he said that is an upgrade fee. I then asked him if they could check to make sure my order was placed and he said they have no way of doing that. He said if you got an email confirmation and you can check the status online that the order has been placed.
I wish they would send out another email stating when the expected arrival of the phone would be so we all know if we will get on on the 24th, 2nd, or 16th.

did anyone's pre-order get canceled?

Yes mine did. Twice. The first time was yesterday after about 30 minutes from initial order. Called premier care and they said so sorry it was a glitch, go ahead and submit a new order, which I did around noon yesterday. Tonight at 6PM get email that second order cancelled as well. I just placed an order with apple to ship ~July 15. **** at&T

I'll be interested to see what the status reads by this saturday. This Monday at the latest should be a great indicator of whether you will get your phone on launch or not.

AT&T is canceling orders, but they are canceling orders for people who tried to do multiple orders on the same line. For example, say someone was greedy and tried to trick the system, so they ordered one from AT&T and then they did again from Apple.com, this caused the system to show 2 pre-orders for that line.

Those individuals who only ordered once from either Apple.com or from AT&T have nothing to worry about, unless their account is severely passed due.

Those who are getting kicked from the iPhone 4 are the people who were too greedy yesterday. I myself ordered from AT&T because it was the only website I could get into to order after spending all day with the glitchy AT&T servers. I ordered mine right before the news of AT&T selling out all of their pre-orders, and I almost tried to Apple.com, but it wouldn't let me. Thank God for that, or I would be in the AT&T won't let you have an iPhone 4 club.

For those that have had their iPhone 4 orders canceled for no apparent reason and know they did nothing wrong, keep your order number that you hopefully printed out when you placed your order. Call AT&T and explain, and you should hopefully be alright. If not order through Apple.com, but you won't get your phone until now it looks like mid-July, or you could go camp out at your local AT&T store or Apple store the night before release and hope to claim the few units of iPhone 4 they will have in stock. Call ahead just to make sure that they will have units in stock on release day however.

Good luck!

I tried to pre-order at at&t and twice (6am Tues), at the final step, it timed out.
I assumed, both times, my order didn't go thru.
I decided to check out the order status site and, surprise, the first order had gone thru.
Today at&t sends an email canceling my order, carefully reading the order number I realize my second "failed" order also went thru.
Got a confirmation email on the first order tonite. Breathing a little easier.

There maybe "extra" phones will become "available" as at&t works thru these issues.

Oh good, that sounds reasonable. I ordered two phones but it was one per new line of service. My husband and I started a new Family Plan, will port our two numbers over from Sprint.

or not. I never tried to "Cheat" anything, yet my premier order was cancelled. twice. lots of speculation in your post. I do hope nobody elses gets cancelled without merit, but I am afraid there will be many. MANY.

EDIT: before you jump on me for placing two orders, after the first one was cancelled, premier care told me to place a new one...

Because
1. There might not be an Apple Store near by to pick up
2. The Pre-Order service is down
3. Some have the FAN account

I have a FAN account and have been able to upgrade at the Apple Store for the past 3 years. As long as it is not a business account there is no problem. FAN account is not the problem.

I'm not pointing a finger at anyone, but there are definitely people out there who thought that they could try to "cheat" the system and get multiple phones on their line due to AT&T's servers melting down. However there are people out there who legitimately had problems and accidentally placed 2 orders. AT&T will work with those individuals. As you stated with your problem, AT&T told you to re-order, which is OK because AT&T was aware of what you were doing.

Wait...what's the problem with business FAN accounts and upgrading via apple.com???

I love it when people talk as if they are speaking facts when they are really just guessing like everyone else.

There is no policy on what happens to people who placed double orders accidentally or on purpose.

I got this notice also yesterday for an Iphone I pre-ordered for my mom. I ordered it at 7AM EST on the first day.

When I got it, I got online and check the order status on the account. It was still showing the Iphone as "in progress".

I noticed that the order number in the email was completely different than the order number I was looking at online.

So I called. At first the rep said it was cancelled cause he's been answering this question all day. However I explained that both order numbers were different. He looked and said the order was still active and the contract had already been extended for 2 years.

He had no explanation for the wrong email.

Today I finally got a confirmation email for the pre-order.

i got another email from AT&T saying
Thank you for your order. Your iPhone4 pre-order has been received and is being processed
in the order it was received. You do not need to take any action. You will receive an email from
us if we need any additional information.

I wish they would tell say "delivered by 24th" but one can dream
