I am also curious if UDP can get $10 discount for auto pay/paperless billing. Can’t find info that says can or can’t.

I got $5 off for autopay and $5 off for paperless with the current UDP from AT&T, which I switched to in April (from a 30GB plan that was grandfathered at 15GB prices).

I’ve had my plan since they offered it and I think since the original iPhone - though honestly not sure about that’s last part.

I think what is just annoying to me is why beat around bush - just say we want to force people off these old plans and so will jack up the price till they jump ship - like those old electric shock arcade games with the metal rods.

The throttling has been in place for awhile so their “explanation” is just marketing crap. They can make more money from people on other plans so want you to opt for one instead. I get it, it’s just the one month notice and the “spin” irks me on principle.

This doesn’t apply to the ipad unlimited data plan. I’ve been grandfathered in that since 2010 and still only pay $29 a month for unlimited data. I have transfered it to every new ipad i’ve bought since. Currently using an ipad mini 2 and plan to buy one of the new ipad pros once they are announced. I believe the AT&T unlimited data plan for the ipad was only given for a few months back in 2010 and was discontinued by AT&T after they probably realized too many people were buying into it. Guess they didn’t put a clause in the contract that said they could raise the price anytime they wanted and were like...Oops! Lets cancel this thing before it gets out of hand. I’m one of the lucky ones who never cancelled and am still granfathered in. I will keep transfering it to every new ipad i own.

there is a new unlimited data plan for iPad for $20. you're overpaying by $10/month
[doublepost=1528655167][/doublepost]new unlimited data plans are so much cheaper compared to the grandfathered unlimited data plan.

So TRUE. I was one of the lucky ones between those few months in 2010 when the iPad arrived. Been 29.99 since. Pop it in a hotspot and the whole family has wifi in the car now!!!

This is the way its going to end....

Those of us that have grandfathered unlimited plans will see prices raised $5 a year every year until its no longer cost effective to pay for unlimited data when you are using less than a metered plan at less cost.

These a - holes need to be sued.

Ah ! The cost of being on unlimited plans. Makes me glad i am on prepaid.

Grandfathered doesn't mean the price is frozen for eternity. It's not like a rent controlled apartment. Any in any case, the term "grandfathered" doesn't appear anywhere in the contract.

Exactly. AT&T will retain them as long as it is in their business interest to do so. Grandfathering is a weird practice, but it helps to retain customers.

You are correct.

I think that, for a lot of folks, having that original "unlimited" plan is a badge of honor. I know I hung onto it about a year longer than I should have. I was being stubborn. But, ultimately, I think it will be phased out when enough people leave the plan.... they need the justification for the public ("Only 10% of all of our users were on the plan" or the like) and that plan will go the way of the dodo.

The new Unlimited plans are way better anyway for very heavy users, as they have the Canada and Mexico roaming plus hotspot.

Aren't cellphone service costs going down year after year in most of the world? Only exception seems to be North America.

They are and they aren't. Our market is bifurcated. Prepaid keeps getting cheaper, postpaid more expensive.

Maybe people simply can't afford home broadband. My family sure can't afford $75/mo for 30 Mbps or worse for actually livable speeds. And that's the only option in town.

You have a plethora of expensive Apple hardware, and you "can't afford" home broadband LOL. Yes, broadband is overpriced, no that's not an excuse to abuse cell service and use it for home internet in areas that are wired for broadband.

Dear America,

Buy your hardware; don't lease-to-buy. Shop plans. Be prepared to switch; it's just a SIM.

-rest of world

That actually works with iPhones, not so much with Android due to lack of support for VoLTE/VoWiFi on unbranded devices. Hopefully the B71 situation will get resolved this fall with the new iPhones.

Not sure why folks say prepaid is less expensive. On AT&T, it's a bit more expensive to go prepaid for my plan than it is to go postpaid.

Who the hell still uses AT&T when you have Tmobile, basically the apple of wireless.
[doublepost=1528725069][/doublepost]
Switching to T-Mobile from AT&T has been the best cell phone related decision I have made since cell phones became a thing. Heck the only reason I switched to AT&T in first place is because they were the only company to have the iPhone. AT&T was the worst cell phone provided that I have had the misfortune of subscribing to. The cost difference with T-Mobile is remarkable.

AT&T- Three lines, two of which were "grandfathered" one with 3gb of data, raised to $210 a month before I dropped them. (taxes and fees varied and I had a contract.) Oh yeah an no hotspot.

T-Mobile- 5 lines, unlimited everything (plus Netflix, Canada and Mexico, and more) $110 a month (taxes and fees included) month to month, no contract. With hotspot included.

Yeah it's a no brainer, as they are faster and also have clearer calls. I push well over 150 to 300 GB through them every single month without an issue.

Does anyone know if it makes sense to get rid of the grandfathered Unlimited plan and switch to the Unlimited plus plan instead?

i have 300mins and a grandfathered plan. Contemplating making the switch for more mins; etc..

The "apple of wireless"? T-Mobile has horrible coverage in my area.

I'm eyeing it - it'll be about $22 cheaper for their most expensive unlimited plan, versus my current grandfathered plan.

Part of my reason for keeping mine is because ATT seems to want me off it. I don’t trust them. Is there any difference between the old grandfather’d unlimited plan and the newer ones?
I made the change last Thursday because of the email about the new once again extra $5 on July. The only difference is that I now have Hotspot and HBO since I went with the most expensive unlimited choice they have plus now I have unlimited text and calls. For me the change was good I think because we set it up as a family plan for 3 people so it became a better choice for me to change and the rest of the fam can enjoy unlimited. Now I can now use the next system if I desire to upgrade my phone in easier installments or offers like 2x1.

I've tried T-Mobile 3x in the past two years just to see if things are getting better (Eastern PA). Coverage has gotten better but the one way audio, dropped calls, missed calls (never rang) were still there. Still riding ATT but they have gotten much worse over the same time frame.

I don't see why anyone on a family plan would want this. I had unlimited data until it didn't make sense for me at $30 with throttling and no tethering option.

About a 3 years ago or so, we switched to the 30GB data shared plan, then about a year later switched to their mobile shared unlimited data plan. Monthly went down about $40 and now we also have mobile hotspot activated(first time this feature was enabled without jailbreaking)

Time to knock on Verizon's door to see what they're offering. Verizon seems to have better coverage when we're in low service areas in California.

-ATT customer since Cingular, 15 years?

Remember, the old $29 plan is for a regular “stand alone” account. It’s not a monthly fee to add the iPad to some other AT&T account (that has other devices). Folks can have no other account with AT&T and simply pay $29/month for their iPad to have unlimited data (that has no restrictions on video streaming quality).

only because you have other carriers to go to if they drop it.. If all mobile carriers just decided to toss out Grandfathered plans no one would have a choice anymore. If anything, no need to have two separate plans and usage.

Grandfathered plans make no sense in principle, but at the same time, I understand why they want to keep them to keep churn lower. I'd probably try out T-Mobile if there was no risk (i.e. no grandfathered plan to lose), and drop from $130 plus tax for two lines to $70 including tax for two lines with Unlimited Data and free global roaming, but with a grandfathered plan, you'd have to make a very convincing case to get me to drop it. They seem to like giving out weird freebies too like double data and Canadian roaming, both of which I've collected to make our plan that much more attractive.

The Mac is a loaner, the iPad was purchased with grants, and I stupidly emptied my savings for the Watch, tv, and HomePod.

EDIT: even then, the Watch and tv were purchased used or on discount.

EDIT II: I shouldn’t have to explain myself to you. As an adult you should be able to understand and comprehend that, sometimes, not everything is as it seems.

You should be able to get an inexpensive pre-paid T-Mobile sim for your phone to try the service out with. Not as convenient as porting your number over to try, but you could swap sims at various locations for a few minutes and get an idea about signal, data, etc
