People looking to upgrade to iPhone 5 should be happy.. If it's delayed, that means they're taking their time and hopefully making a great product. Hoping for a bigger screen and antenna back inside!

Also, I'm more concerned with iOS 5 and what it'll bring, than I am with what new specs the iPhone 5 will have.

This is news????

I thought based on all the other reports it was a fore gone conclusion that there will not be any IP5 this summer.

To chose a 4G phone over an iPhone in 2011 is a poor choice and the result of marketing and nothing more. Unless you live in spot with great 4G service and never plan to leave the house, you won't see average speeds any faster than an AT&T iPhone. Not to mention your web browser won't render pages half as fast as Safari, so speed differences are utterly negated.

Plus the fact that few countries have 4G networks. Apple cares about selling worldwide and many markets aren't ready for that

Phone 5 release is August 2011

August people...August 26th to be exact!

I just heard from a informed source!

I don't understand one thing. Why can't Apple confirm this themselves? That way people will at least know what they can do. Either you wait or you move onto to another device.

because if apple is going to say a new iphone is coming, only a fool will buy the old one at full price

i bet a new is coming in June but apple doesn't want to see a sales drop off. anyone that asks me i tell them that expect a new one in June and don't buy the 4 since it's stone age tech by now

I wonder why they've moved it to a later date?

I would have to say its because apple was in production fixing the Iphone 4 for 8 months just to get the white one in stores and i would have to say that put them behind on production of a new phone.

Yeah, it's 2010 hardware and people keep saying its revolutionary. Doesn't look that way at all anymore with dual core Android phones left and right.

Point proven by Nintendo's silly move to tell everyone about Project Cafe. Wiis weren't selling before and now they'll sell even less.

All Part of the Plan

I suspect that there are a couple of reasons for the change.

1 - there's a huge spike in sales with the release of any iOS device, having the iPad in the first half of the year and the iPhone in the second half of the year better levels the demand, the time required by the Apple team, and better levels traffic patterns in the stores.

2 - The iPod is becoming less and less important to Apple. Every iPhone includes and iPod, every iPad includes an iPod. In the past year we've seen something like a 17% decrease in sales of the iPod, with over 50% of them being the iPod Touch. The iPod classic is on it's last legs, the shuffle is the only click wheel iPod left, and a 2GB iPod Nano would be a compelling option, and then Apple is done with the traditional click wheels, and just have touch screen iPods across the board, with the "ultimate iPod" being the iPhone - all updated in September.

Disappointing, but expected. This actually brings up more questions than answers though:

1) Is this a permanent move to a Fall Release of the iPhone?

2) When, if ever, are they going to unite the CDMA and GSM iPhone releases (possibly in iPhone 5 with "World Chip")?

3) Does this affect the timing of iOS's release, which has traditionally been released with the new iPhone and has been centered around the iPhone's hardware?

4) The iPod touch has traditionally been released months after the iPhone. If the iPhone is released around Sept, will they release the iPod touch along with it?

.

Exactly. Good questions: I would love to get a CDMA.GSM world phone. I guess it will have to be a Blackberry.

1.) I doubt anything in Apple's schedule is etched in concrete. They will release new products when they are ready. Apple doesn't really need to follow any specific timetable. They got out of tradeshows so they weren't obligated to release new product at a third-party event. If Apple wants to move the iPhone release around the calendar, you better believe they will do whatever they damned well please.

2.) No one knows. You'll find out when the rest of us do: when Apple announces. The iPhone 5 is a possible candidate (the next likely opportunity would be the iPhone 6). The iPhone 4 (CDMA version) actually has a combo GSM-CDMA Qualcomm chip, although Apple does not utilize the GSM circuitry (there's no SIM card in that handset).

3.) It's entirely possible that Apple would change the release date for iOS to match a change of the release date of new phone hardware. Because they're Apple and they can do whatever they damned well please. They keep their own schedules.

4.) I personally do not think the supply chain can support a simultaneous iPhone/iPod touch release. While Apple can generally release things whenever they want, the iPods are a bit of the exception. iPod sales skyrocket during the holidays, so Apple really needs to have their holiday product line set by November. The more likely scenario (if Apple were to delay the iPhone 5 from June/July) would be a late August/early September release of the iPhone 5 and an October release of the iPod touch.

I could not disagree with you more...

I personally believe these days that the look of the phone comes secondary to what is "under the hood".

Yes it helps if it's a good shape with a good screen but if Apple continue to release devices that a technically better the the rest then people will lap it up - the death grip didnt stop so many iPhone 4s being sold did it - people accepted it as the device packed a punch

People buy iPhones because they work well, look good, and are cool/in. I would say that 80% of the iPhone buying world doesn't give a damn what's "under the hood." I fail to see how you could possibly think otherwise.

Meh. I was not upgrading until the "6" anyway.

OMG....I would NEVER take information as fact from an "ATT customer service agent". I have received so much wrong info or even been dare I say lied to, I would never trust what a random ATT rep said.

Not to mention, the service reps are so far down the chain of command, they would not have info on when the next iphone is being released.

Yes, once I called AT&T to get information on my partner discount. I called three times and got three different answers. I called about which data plans could be used with my Treo 680 -- I called three times and got three different answers. The moral of the story is: If you don't like what the AT&T rep says just keep calling back until you get the answer you want.

pfft, this should not be front page news, hell not even second page... just a bunch of hearsay from a CR that knows nothing about it and speculates BS.

Certainly not news-worthy. Hardly a credible source.

A real live AT&T customer care rep! Well that is as official as it gets. Everyone knows that Apple always informs carrier customer care reps of their future plans months in advance...

Oh Wait. I heard from the Cinnabon guy that the US Government called him and officially informed him that Osama Bin Laden is still alive and being held in a secret chamber below Disney World or Disney Land.

I heard the same thing about Osama Bin Laden from the guy behind the counter at my corner mini-mart. He just got off the phone with the President when I walked up to the counter. Normally I would not believe him, but he stated it as a matter of fact, so I knew it was true.

Even if Apple and Google both make money from ads and apps... Apple still gets $600 per phone.

Apple has the right idea :D

"Android" can have their marketshare... I don't think it bothers Apple in the least.

Steve Jobs cares about market share for one reason. He knows that the young Google founders whom he was helping and mentoring stole some of his company's best ideas and are now helping his competitors to take the market share that he intended to consume. It always sucks when somebody steals from you and then uses it against you -- especially when its the folks you consider your partners or allies. I'm sure there is more to the story, but I am pretty sure that's how Steve Jobs views it.

I do agree, however, that the smartphone market growth we are seeing with Android is primarily made up of folks who are not interested in having a smartphone but are just picking up the best free or ultra-cheap phone. These phones are typically running a generation-old version of the Android OS and the folks who purchase them are really only interested in their phone ringing when a call comes in (i.e.: if they won't pay for a phone, then they won't pay for an app, and therefore are not tied-to the Android ecosystem).

Also, the PC vs Mac war that Apple has supposedly "lost" has left them being the most profitable PC maker in the world (just counting Mac sales). That's pretty amazing considering they are not #1 on revenue or units sold, but they still make more profit than the folks selling commoditized PCs. Not a bad "consolation prize" for "losing" the PC war. Note that as the PC market is declining, Macs are still showing phenomenal gains.

Secondly, let's not ignore that Apple is still the mobile OS leader worldwide when you count iPod Touch and iPad. Their current dominance with iPad is overwhelming and those buyers are not getting a free or BOGO offer like the folks picking up Android smartphones. Those folks are going to buy apps and buy-in to the iOS ecosystem.

Finally, the smartphone market will very likely not play out like the PC market. Greg Cox wrote a very good piece on the differences on his blog.

As a consumer I am both grateful and weary of the competition. Having a dominant Apple would help put pressure on the publishing companies and Hollywood (I hate publishing and movie industry folks trying to get me to pay for the same content over and over again). At the same time competition keeps Apple from doing as much "planned obsolescence". Competition tends to accelerate development in that it gives you somebody to set pace with and hence we probably get one or two extra features out of every iPhone release and iOS update. I don't think competition drives Apple the way it drives others though. Apple tends to have a proactive plan for the future of their devices that they probably make minor deviations from based on competition. Whether their plan is good (iPhone, iPad), lack-luster (MobileMe) or bad (Ping), they tend to stick to it.

Personally, I wish Microsoft's mobile OS or Web OS was doing better than Android though. I say this because Google does not care about producing a great mobile OS so much as disrupting the market, generating a large footprint, and getting a platform whereby they can deliver ads to users. For Google, Android is a means to an end. MS and HP care more about the quality of the OS experience since the software is their actual product and they are the ones dealing with the customer support issues. Google has a reputation for leaving things unfinished and forgetting about them and not providing direct support.

I'm not even mad. I love my (jailbroken) iPhone 4.

I just wish the white came out a year ago.

A sales rep reply is now how low the credibility standards have fallen?
While you are collecting more hard data like this, I'll be prepping my Black card for the purchase of a pair of new iPhone 5s in June.

Awesome card-name-dropping, dude. I am so impressed

Whatever the delay is for, it better be good.
If this iPhone does NOT have 4G, I, along with many other people,
will be very disappointed.

This "story" is hilarious. Only people who have never worked customer service would ever believe any part of this.

Wow.

Omg omg omg omg!

No new iphone in July?

What am I going to do!

And this information comes from where you say, one of those idiot ATT customer reps?

Must be true then!

But who cares really!

People who can't wait a few more months need to get a grip!

After all this leaves so much more time for all the rumors and speculation to get really cranked up!

Hmm, I used to spend a lot of time waiting for Apple products to come out by checking the MacRumors buyers guides etc. Then I was stung when I got it all wrong and bought an iBook just before they were updated, despite trying really hard for that not to happen!

My conclusion, don't listen to vague rumours and wait around for ages! Buy if you want it now, unless there's almost certain evidence that an upgrade is imminent :)

KILL THIS WHOLE THREAD!!! Here's the answer

Care to elaborate? I realize I haven't had my coffee yet but makes sense on this end.

Never been suspended for non-payment.
Dropped a $10/month third line from plan ~ 6 months ago.

Although, now that I'm waking up more, I did lower my rate plan as well a few months ago. The 2 of us weren't using 1400 minutes anymore, so we went down to 550. This must be the cause of it.

"we went down to 550" <---THIS

You went down to 550 and expected an early upgrade?

Also, you don't need to be suspended for non-payment, if the payment is late at all they'll consider it for the early upgrade date.

As I mentioned in an earlier comment, my early upgrade is still set for 6/25/2011, and I bought the iPhone 4 on launch day 6/24/2011.

Read through this thread. Look at other sites that picked this up. Look at what you did.

Think next time.
