I wish I were making this up - chat transcript copied and pasted below (I cut out the header telling me I had to wait for the next available agent 25 times)

Rajaee H: Welcome to AT&T Premier Support. How may I assist you today?
Jim C: I would like to pre order an iphone 4
Jim C: but I can't do it through the premier website
Rajaee H: Mr. C, unfortunately, our systems are down.
Rajaee H: Due to the high traffic volume on the site...
Jim C: so you are saying I cannot pre order the iphone 4?
Rajaee H: Unfortunately not, sir.
Rajaee H: I do apologize for the inconvenience.
Jim C: when can I preorder the phone?
Jim C: and will I be able to receive it on the 24th?
Rajaee H: I can provide you with two options, however...
Rajaee H: You can try the site at a later time or visit an AT&T location to have your pre-order placed.
Jim C: I can log in to the premier site
Jim C: but no phones show up as available to me
Rajaee H: Sorry, sir. That is due to the system updating itself.
Jim C: how will I be able to place an order at the store if you can't even do it?
Jim C: do they have access to different systems than you do?
Rajaee H: We use different ordering systems, sir.
Jim C: at this point I cannot go to the store before closing time
Jim C: and I have wasted hours waiting for an agent in chat
Jim C: and trying to call your phone number which is down
Rajaee H: Once again, I apologize for the inconvenience.
Jim C: this is very unsatisfactory
Rajaee H: Sorry, sir. The whole situation should have been planned differently.
Jim C: I don't understand why your company would plan a day for pre-orders of the phone and not have the capacity to handle demand
Rajaee H: You are not the only one. Believe me...
Jim C: especially after you have had problems before with all of the previous iphone launches
Jim C: why should I not just go to Verizon and get a Droid?
Rajaee H: The iPhone is awesome! Even if we fail to be at times...
Jim C: I agree that the phone is awesome, but many of the new android phones are also awesome
Jim C: and I can order them without all of these problems
Rajaee H: I agree. I have Android, myself.
Jim C: haha
Jim C: so basically you are saying your company is worthless and I should just go get an Android phone?
Rajaee H: I went into a store, handed over some money, and walked out with a new toy.
Rajaee H: No, I wouldn't say worthless. Just adjusting...
Jim C: Wow.
Jim C: I guess if At&T says I can't order an iPhone and that the Android phones are awesome I should go get one
Jim C: which Andrioid phone do you recommend?
Rajaee H: On AT&T?
Jim C: does AT&T carry android phones?
Jim C: seems like Verizon and Sprint have the best phones to me
Rajaee H: Yes. The Backflip.
Rajaee H: That would be correct.
Jim C: and since I can't order phones on AT&T it seems like I will have to go to Verizon or Sprint to get a new phone
Rajaee H: Sorry to hear that...

Why not try through Apple? AT&T's initial allocation is sold out anyway and Apple's ordering process is starting to work better.
 
How old are u for real? That was vey immature and childish. It's not his fault that things ended up poorly.
 
would it really be such a bad thing if you don't get an iPhone on June 24th?

I love Apple products as much as the next guy, but geez, have some patience.
 
chill dude Apple been down all day as well. You going to call and harass there customer service as well. is it the end of the frickibng world if you get it the 25th or the 26th!

As frustrated as I have been today, I have to agree with others and say that you backed this guy into a corner for reasons beyond his control.

...but I know how frustrated you must feel, as well.
 
What do you expect him to do really? He can't magically fix all the problems...It seems like you poured all your anger out on him when none of it is his fault.
 
This guy has been getting pummeled all day and then you treat him like that? No wonder he was trying to get rid of you.

What a douche.
 
Hell I know an AT&T rep who has a back flip cause it's a free phone for him and he says it is the last phone anyone should buy it's complete crap.
 
wow what a douche, the guy is trying to help you out and you were very rude to him. I can't stand customers like this
 
A customer service representative isn't going to beg you to stay, if that's what you were expecting. If you want to leave, that's your choice.

And AT&T does have some Android phones, and will have more soon.
 
Seriously if you throw a fit, they're going to try and make you happy. That's probably offering you a different phone since you're asking the impossible.
