so I have to pay extra to use my cell phone at home in the middle of Cambridge because AT&T doesn't get their act together? Negative!

Yeah, don't hate just to hate. Building materials, proximity to tall buildings, and many other factors impede cell reception.

$149 isn't terrible for a guaranteed great connection. And if you can use your standard minutes from your cell plan, all the better!

To paraphrase you-

"Don't Love just to Love"

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? You think it's anyone's responsibility other than AT&T to give me the coverage I'm paying for? You think I am supposed to shell out more money JUST to get the coverage I should already be getting?

Honestly, I'm going to add a Paypal account to my signature, because if you think paying for NOTHING is a good deal, then I have a lot of nothing you can pay me for.

:confused::confused::confused:

Seriously. I for one am getting tired of everyone complaining about AT&T and the service.

I'm so sorry to have irritated you. From now on, I will only make pro-AT&T posts.

AT&T raising iPhone plan prices to $300/month? This is actually a good thing, since it will allow them to continue offering the greatest network in the world. They will have 4G service rolled out to the entire U.S. before any other carrier.

For all those upset about AT&T relying on your internet to alleviate network stress, remember that the other providers are also doing the same thing. I don't see the big deal, but fortunately I have reliable signal in my apt. Femtocell is a good idea since spectrum is a finite resource.

Yeah? But they're not putting the consumer in the same place AT&T are, at least T-Mobile isn't. I have another cell phone, and it's with T-mobile, I also have T-Mobile@home for my landline/voip with unlimited nation-wide for 10 bucks a month on the same contract. That same router I bought for 40 dollars, will also let my T-mobile cell phone switch to wifi mode and through the router make calls, for free.

Every major wireless carrier sells "microcells" to improve their in-building coverage:
Verizon does.
Sprint does.
T-Mobile does.
and now AT&T does.

So using your logic, EVERY carrier is basically admitting that their service is garbage, and if you want good service, then, well, you're just going to have to pay more.

Yes they suck, big time. They now want to charge on top of what a person pays because their in a deal with Apple and have a monopoly. That is one reason I hated Apple is still doing this, how hard would it be for apple to sell their phones, and allow any carrier. Come on its 2010 and we still doing business like its 1985.

I don't agree that this should be completely free, the device costs money to make, you should pay for it. BUT it shouldn't be using your minutes while you're using your personal network for the call. A flat-rate subscription like $4-5 a month seems more appropriate.
AT&T's network might need more capacity in certain markets but RF isn't magic, they can't just upgrade their network and make it work in your signal-blocking structure. This device has a market, but should be billed appropriately.

lol...winner!!

Seriously. I for one am getting tired of everyone complaining about AT&T and the service.

All service providers have issues, yes even mighty Verizon has service issues. AT&T has improved their network and it is now better than some others. :)

I was with Verizon before the iPhone came along. I'm very glad I switched to AT&T as Verizon is not as good as they think they are.
All U.S. mobile operators basically suck, based on a recent Consumer Reports survey.

Verizon was only a fraction better than AT&T, by an amount that was barely statistically significant.

Basically, Verizon is a 37" giant in a land of three-foot midgets.

So, if you live in the United States and use a mobile phone, feel free to whine about your cellular carrier because frankly, you're right. U.S. mobile operators are atrocious. ALL OF THEM.

I have none of these problems in Germany, or in Austria, or in Kairo. My german cell phone contract is 10 Euros a month (ok with 50 min free or so...). No dropped calls, no dialing delays, no sound quality issues and reception everywhere outside a bunker. Yes, I think the providers here have shoddy service at high prices and now they found a way to make us even pay for it. The necessary infrastructure is then provided by you paying your ISP on top of that.

honestyl

is seems at though the level of intelligence in here is devastating. ATT 3g micro cell is identical to verizon wireless extender. it creates a mini cell phone tower in your house, supports ten cell phones at once and its great if your service isn't very good in your home. how is this a bad thing, you DO NOT have to pay a monthly service at all. you but the device, if you read correctly you would notice that if you wanted to take advantage of the rebate you can sign up for service and receive a 100 dollar rebate. Otherwise go buy the device, pay 150, don't sign up and don't get a rebate and quit whining.

I have to pay ATT to save them money and get service.?

Ok let me get this right.

I agree with :)
1. I have to pay for the hardware......:)

I dont agree with
1. I have to pay monthly to use the hardware...
2. ATT does nothing for me to use my internet to transmit the call i am already paying for.
3. There goes future network upgrades now ATT can just tell you to buy a microcell.

It's still connecting to the AT&T network. It's just getting to it a different way.

I think the 'using your minutes' part is totally fair.

You don't have to.

1. AT&T/Verizon don't require you to pay a monthly fee to use the hardware. Sprint does.

2. How exactly do you think your call "jumps" from the Internet over to the phone that you're calling? Cell phone companies still have to do most of the work every time you make a call on a microcell.

Reception in my apartment is atrocious, so bad, my wife and I have been pining for a T-Mobile iPhone (we never had any trouble with T-Mobile so long as we never had to talk to them about anything). If that doesn't happen with the next iPhone, we'll simply opt for one of these instead.

I am a little peeved that they rely on my existing Internet connection, but it would be nice to sustain those few calls I make at home. I wonder how ISPs feel about this.

You do have to pay monthly

YOU DO HAVE TO PAY MONTHLY DEPENDING ON IS U USE YOUR PLAN MINUTES IT WILL COST $9.99 - $19.99 MONTHLY

When you make a cell phone call, once it hits the tower, where do you think the call goes from there? AT&T's network. That doesn't change with the femtocell. It goes from your femtocell, to your ISP, into AT&T's network, and then to the destination. That still costs them money, therefore, it is still very fair that it uses your minutes.

1. I have to pay monthly to use the hardware...
False

2. ATT does nothing for me to use my internet to transmit the call i am already paying for.
How the hell do you think the call gets from "your internet" to the person on the other line?

3. There goes future network upgrades now ATT can just tell you to buy a microcell.
Right, because AT&T believes that people never leave their homes and go anywhere where they can't have a femtocell, like a mall or their job.

YOU DO HAVE TO PAY MONTHLY DEPENDING ON IS U USE YOUR PLAN MINUTES IT WILL COST $9.99 - $19.99 MONTHLY

NO YOU DON'T!

T-Mobile's is called @HOME, and the device doesn't cost anything, because there isn't one. It uses your existing WiFi network (which means only phones with WiFi can use it)
Couldn't find much pricing info on their website, so not sure how they work it.

It's a flat $10 on your bill to use that service. The technology behind it is called UMA, and the phone needs to be enabled for the service. not sure if its a hardware requirement or a software thing to be able to switch off calls automatically.
For a company like Tmobile with less footprint than the other carriers it makes a lot of sense. they've been doing it for years now. If i talked on the phone more I'd consider it, for $10 its not bad. which brings me to my point... i think the reactions here would be a lot less severe if the pricing werent so extreme. $20 is just way too steep for this kind of service.

I hate AT&T's service..in my house..Verizon is not a problem buy my iphone with AT&T sucks and now I'm suppose to pay $150 buck + another subscription service...I can't wait until Apple gets rid of AT&T cause it sucks

$20 bucks a month for unlimited nationwide calling? It's cheaper than most landlines or VoIP products.

Where do you see that you're supposed to pay for another subscription service? Because apparently all the usual AT&T haters see this written somewhere and I don't see it mentioned anywhere.

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THE MICROCELL SERVICE, only if you don't want to use your min while on the microcell, then you can pay 19.99 for unlimited service.

you don't have to pay

So now AT&T wants to piggy-back off MY internet connection? Seriously?

God forbid AT&T actually improves the cellular coverage. This is a band-aid fix to an enormous problem!

AT&T is basically admitting that their service is garbage and if you want good service then, well, you're just going to have to pay more.

This company is a joke, I can't wait until their exclusivity expires.

every carrier does this exact same thing.

Agreed. Although the $20 unlimited calling is very Vonage-like and could allow you to dump your land-line entirely.

Can you configure your phone to "prefer" the microcell over some other tower that's in range when you're home? Or would that simply happen automatically since it would have the strongest signal?

It should automatically happen as long as it's the strongest signal. I'm sure they will actually attempt to give that priority since it's better for them to use your network vs their cell network.
