$20 bucks a month for unlimited nationwide calling? It's cheaper than most landlines or VoIP products.

Where do you see that you're supposed to pay for another subscription service? Because apparently all the usual AT&T haters see this written somewhere and I don't see it mentioned anywhere.

agreed, the verizon idiots are on macrumors again. people with small IQ's head over to verizon and get you some BS EVDO rev A that is a joke beyond Jokes and pick up the Samsung Network Extender that verizon has sold for a year and does the samething as the ATT microcell oh and guess what. ITS FREEEEEEEEE TOOOOOOOOOOO

It should automatically happen as long as it's the strongest signal. I'm sure they will actually attempt to give that priority since it's better for them to use your network vs their cell network.

When you connect to the microcell your service will say microcell on your phone rather then att

$149 isn't terrible for a guaranteed great connection. And if you can use your standard minutes from your cell plan, all the better!

Wait so what's my $250 a month along with millions of other peoples money going towards, CEO bonuses?

So now AT&T wants to piggy-back off MY internet connection? Seriously?

God forbid AT&T actually improves the cellular coverage. This is a band-aid fix to an enormous problem!

AT&T is basically admitting that their service is garbage and if you want good service then, well, you're just going to have to pay more.

This company is a joke, I can't wait until their exclusivity expires.

I know right? God forbid it! Not even Veriz.... oh wait, even Verizon offers this. Grow up, carriers offer this as an alternative if you want it.

Don't know where you live, but your money went towards 100 new cell sites in my state last year, with plans for 200 more new ones this year. THANK YOU!

Last year, we proudly added nearly 100 new cell sites in Virginia. Here are a few of the key areas where AT&T bolstered your network coverage:

• Virginia Beach Waterfront
• Visitor's Center in Williamsburg
• 14 sites in Hanover County in Richmond
• Bridgewater College, Liberty University & University of Virginia (including Scott Stadium & John Paul Jones Arena)
• 12 sites on Rte 29 between Charlottesville & Lynchburg
• Rte 122 & Rte 24 near Smith Mountain Lake
• Rte 460 in Western Virginia

And of course, we continued our 3G expansion across the state. AT&T 3G was added to these areas in 2009:

• Southeastern Virginia - Suffolk, Southern Chesapeake & Red Mill
• Central Virginia - Charlottesville, Louisa, Orange, Culpepper & Warrenton
• Shenandoah Valley - Harrisonburg & Winchester
• Western Virginia - Blacksburg, Christiansburg & Roanoke

We're planning another huge cell site build in 2010! Check out the Network Hot Spots to see what's coming soon.

Plus, we're planning to add more than 200 3G sites as we continue to grow AT&T's 3G network across the region.

I can't believe how negative the general reception is to this device!

Sure, the $150 is a little steep. I would think $100 would be a smarter price. But there are NO monthly fees if you use your own cell minutes. For people who live in an area with no coverage, spending this $150 makes reception problems a thing of the past. The extra $20 a month gets you UNLIMITED minutes when using the device, which most people won't bother with. The important thing is that for $150, any home can now have great coverage for good. This is the ONLY solution that was ever possible, and they did it in a way that is pretty fair for everyone.

YOU DO HAVE TO PAY MONTHLY DEPENDING ON IS U USE YOUR PLAN MINUTES IT WILL COST $9.99 - $19.99 MONTHLY

No, you don't have to pay a monthly fee to use a microcell. And all the caps in the world is not going to change that fact...

You people are f'in retarded. Every carrier offers these boxes.. I actually think AT&Ts is the cheapest option. This allows people who live in the middle of freaking nowhere to get cell coverage at their house. This is nothing but a good thing!

Fyi...

The more people who are offloaded to these microcells, the less congestion and bandwidth requirements they have for their cell sites. Some of these cell sites have 8+ T1 connections ( I'm in telecom, I've worked for AT&T and T-Mobile ) which are extremely costly.

It's in AT&T's best interest to get as many people on micocells as possible. They should be given out for very cheap if not free to every customer IMO because it would save them a lot of money in the long run.

OK buddy i know how the thing works but if ATT is going to use my internet connection they should not charge me on top of the hardware no **** it wont pay for itself .........Look at it this way say you lived next to motor speedway and you have a big front yard so the speedway askes if they can start parking cars there to because they have run out of room then they start charging people to park in your lawn. making Quite the profit no property taxes etc nice for them....Then they send you a bill for clean up ETC, what the heck do you get out of it NOTHING but a lawn full of cars.....Oh you got to help the speedway that makes it worth it now if you go to the race you will have room to park......LOL LMAFO

That's a terrible analogy because you're still using AT&T's network with the Microcell.......LOL LMAFO

AT&T doesn't charge you, on top of the hardware, to use your regular minutes.

Just like every other carrier?...

how and why is the complaining in this thread continuing past the above quoted post? Poor reading comprehension skills is the only explanation I can think of.

People, this is OPTIONAL for people who want it; nobody is making you buy or sign up for anything. And to aristobrat's point, this is right in line with the industry standard, and better in two important respects than mighty verizon.

Are you people even stopping to consider the facts or just bashing AT&T out of habit at this point?

More stuff about ipad!!!!!!!!!!!

we dont care about trivial stuff like this. We need to know more about the ipad. look at this post's ratings!!!!!!!! I want my Apple ipad!!!!!!! im getting crazy

Yea!!!!

I work in a building where we get horrible reception from all cell phone providers. We were just quoted $6,000 to put antennas on the roof and install devices in the building so we could get reception. With the AT&T MicroCell, we can buy 4 of them for just $600 (saving 90%!!!!) and get the same coverage. It will only cover those with AT&T phones but we've been pushing everyone to get iPhones anyway;)

This device may not fit your needs but it nailed ours.

To paraphrase you-

"Don't Love just to Love"

ARE YOU KIDDING ME? You think it's anyone's responsibility other than AT&T to give me the coverage I'm paying for? You think I am supposed to shell out more money JUST to get the coverage I should already be getting?

Honestly, I'm going to add a Paypal account to my signature, because if you think paying for NOTHING is a good deal, then I have a lot of nothing you can pay me for.

:confused::confused::confused:

Yeah, you're confused.

Look at it this way: if ATT were to put enough new towers in to get service for everyone, you don't think you'd be paying for that? You would, it would just be in the form of higher monthly fees. This way you get better coverage and a one-time fee. Or you can just keep whining.

It seems pretty clear that if you buy it out-right, minutes used will go against your monthly voice minutes. Or you can pay $20/mo for unlimited.

I wonder what contract you need to get the $100 rebate. That will cover 5 months.

Whatever. Seem pretty cool although I've got a hangup on paying to use my broadband to supplement poor AT&T coverage.

We never get near our monthly minutes, so it doesn't bother me too much. It would be cool to have solid phone coverage everywhere around my house, just have to figure if it's worth the $150 ticket.

As of 2 months ago i went to the ATT store near Mooresville NC and i am looking at the brochure now and if u use your plan minutes the monthly charge is 9.99 if you want unlimited microcell minutes is 19.99 monthly on top of the cell plan you already have........
I gave you a link to what AT&T is currently saying about the pricing, today, on its national website.

FWIW, the Charlotte area was a pilot site for this service, so what you read may have been true two months ago, in that specific area, during the pilot. However, that is not how AT&T appears to be positioning the service now.

Here is the link again, if you missed it:

That was then...this is now. No fees if you want to use your plan minutes; $19.99 if you want unlimited.

Ok, first off all you people that are bitching and complaining about the price of this thing, go live in an area where 3G is nill and EDGE is spotty at best. Live like that for a year or 2. I guarentee you will be singing a different tune.

I bought mine about a month ago and am loving it. Since my cell is my only voice line at the house, I wasn't able to make or receive calls unless I went outside and hoped the signal would last. I don't use very many minutes, so piggy backing on my internet is not a big damned deal.

During initial setup of the device, it asked me which phone numbers I wanted to allow to access the microcell. I believe 10 is the limit. Also phones MUST BE 3G, not just have a 3G SIM, but be 3G capable. After that, I set it next to a window and it downloaded some updates from AT&T and then my iPhone read AT&T 3G M-Cell at the top. Works great.

I understand the value of this product - it certianly helps in places like NYC were there could be a lot of reasons why reception is poor.

I just hope ATT doesn't position it has an alternative to improving their network, which is crap.

I carry both a Verizon and ATT phone because I travel a lot and it is important for me to stay connected with the office. Verizon definitely has the best coverage if you are traveling - although there have been times when I had a signal from ATT and not Verizon.

ATT is correct, when you are connected to their network, they are faster. But the caveat is you have to be connected. And my own experience is there are a lot of places where ATT simply doesn't have coverage.
