AT&T Temporarily Suspends New iPhone Pre-Orders

FINALLY!! I didn't get an email but my order is showing up on AT&T's website. Now, whether it actually does get delivered in the 24th is another story but at least it's in there.

Double Orders

I'm reading that many people ordered a phone on both AT$T & Apples site or booked reservations for Apple stores. For those that pre-ordered (actually paid with their card) to have them shipped and who made a reservation I would assume the stores will end up with more inventory once the reservations are canceled.

It's a fail because even if they sold out they should be able to accept reorders for delivery after the launch day (like they did for much of yesterday). The reason they have to stop is not because they sold out, but because their computer systems imploded.

Who'd you rather be? Successful you or unsuccessful them?

I thought so.

You are either not an AT&T customer and/or just like to be on the popular bandwagon.

AT&Ts cellular service in the vast majority of service areas in the US is perfectly fine. In those areas with extremely high concentrations of iPhones (San Francisco Bay area, Manhattan, Washington DC), any network (/carrier) experiencing the high load of data required to serve those devices is going to lag and experience service problems. Verizon (for example) doesn't experience this because they do not have a device that consistently achieves such a high rate of data transfer.

AT&T has spotty service in quite a few areas where Verizon and other carriers work just fine. I hear this quite often from different employees where I work who have AT&T phones. Their US Cellular and Verizon friends dont have the same reception problems.

Bandwagon . . I never get on 'em. I was one of the first on here to admit abandoning my service with AT&T. So yes I used to be an AT&T customer until I was overcharged for the last time without being afforded the ability to dispute the made up charges. Unfortunately as a result, I have had to abandon using most of the services the iphone offers. For me, the connection was never a problem, it was the crazy pricing of packages and the false overcharging every month with the thousand contrived excuses to keep money that they unjustly took.
The point I wold like to make to you is that even though Verizon and Tmobile etc.. do not yet have the iphone, I am positive that by the time they do they will have their systems ramped up and running more tha properly so that all these petty problems people experience at AT&T will not occur.

On what was perhaps the 150th try yesterday, don't judge me, I was abe to get through on the ATT site at approx 3:30pm EST and order a 32gb iP4.

At present I am able to look up via my order number on ATT's site that there is an 'in progress' status to my order, but the order date is today, 6/16, which of course if not possible as sales were suspended yesterday afternoon.

I still have not received a confirmation email.

In the same boat as you are
This morning I couldnt pull the order status, then it appeared. I first had 1's in the QTY backorder cells, then those changed. Now I have 1's in the QTY Ordered cells for my i4 32gb/various sim/freight. Looks like they are sifting through the orders from yesterday and updating statuses. I think we'll get order confirmations today and hopefully we'll see our phones around the 24th or 25th.

ATT probably doesn't have a clue how many they sold. They might have sold out, and they might not have. They might have sold twice what they were allocated. Given the circumstances, it's conveeeeenient for them to say that they did. You see, in any case, demand is there, and if they didn't sell out, they will as soon as they fix the mess, and the public will be none the wiser.

I'm more confident that Apple actually did sell out. They didn't seem to have any problem with their online systems other than with the interface to the ATT backend server used to verify accounts.

They probably did both have 10 times the *traffic* as normal. That's because each user probably attempted at least 10 times to reserve a phone! Even, so Apple's systems weathered the storm. ATT's didn't.

I'm not convinced that this was due to anything but ATT's flawed last-minute security update, that wound-up being insecure. I think they needed a good excuse to shut the system down. But they couldn't do that, it would be too shocking to the public. Though it would have been the best thing to do. "Sorry, no pre-orders today, anywhere. Our systems are screwed-up and we need to fix them. Go home. Nothing here to see." So, now they've done this today.

Now ATT is sitting on a pile of paper slips, another pile of online orders or dubious reliability, and sweating being able to activate phones for the people standing in line at the Apple stores on the 24th.

My prediction is that we will walk away from the counter with some kind of rain-check, because ATT still won't have their act together. They won't be able to send us away with phones to activate later, because they won't know what price we are qualified for.

I agree with you that AT$T does not really know what they sold or took reservation for. I predict that many people will be disappointed on the 24th. I've had bad experience ordering on AT$T's site on a "normal" day so I order on Apples site and have received my phones as advertised. Mine is set for delivery to my house on the 24th and I bet it will be there. Then the activation drama can begin.:(

there will also be something to complain about. if you don't like AT&T don't buy the iPhone. its plain in simple. why do you switch companies just to have the newest phone if the service doesn't suit your needs.

Good point. I hadn't thought of this, but AT&T's system is going to be hammered again on the 24th as everyone tries to activate their new phones. Hopefully they'll get everything sorted out by then. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Way to spin there ol AT&T...

From AT&T's statement: "iPhone 4 pre-order sales yesterday were 10-times higher than the first day of pre-ordering for the iPhone 3G S last year. Consumers are clearly excited about iPhone 4, AT&T's more affordable data plans and our early upgrade pricing."

I call this a spin to the max. The pricing on the plans continues to be weak, and the data 200 MB is complete BS. Texting plans continue to be a slap in the jaw, at 200 @5.00 and 1500 *(the only next level) at 15.00.

I have priced this up and down, and it continues to be very expensive.

I am sick of AT&T riding on the Win of iPhone- ** Statement should have read as follows:

- IPHONE PRE-ORDER SALES YESTERDAY WERE 10 TIMES HIGHER THAN PRE-ORDERING IPHONE 3GS LAST YEAR. CONSUMERS ARE CLEARLY EXCITED ABOUT IPHONE 4, AND THEY CONTINUE TO LET THE EXCITEMENT OF THE TECH OVERWEIGH OUR CRAPPY, CONFUSING, EXPENSIVE, AND UN-CUSTOMER FRIENDLY SERVICE. THANK YOU  FOR ALLOWING AT&T TO RIDE ON YOUR COAT TAILS AND CONTINUE TO GIVE THE ILLUSION THAT WE ARE PART OF THE IPHONE SUCCESS.
:D

Yeah well, while it may not be helpful to you, it does help some. For example, my parents. They like the iPhone and rarely use over 20 megs a month or even send 10 text messages. This plan helps them a lot. There is an audience for it, but it's not you and me. Don't assume your statement blankets 100% of all AT&T users.

Then why can't people get a White iPhone now? If Apple was so perfect they would sell people one.

Who said anything about Apple being perfect? And who said anything about perfection being measured by the ability to sell white iPhones on a particular date? Frankly, those things are fugly. I give Apple bonus points for NOT clogging up the pre-order queues even further with a bunch of teenage boys trying to get white iphones so that their jonas brothers decals will stand out better on them. :)

Who'd you rather be? Successful you or unsuccessful them?

I thought so.

Yes. I'd rather be me. Being a corporation doesn't appeal to me. And what's your point? It's not a failure because they are "successful?" So I guess BP didn't fail in the gulf, either?

AT&T Order No Longer in System?

So I managed to order through AT&T early yesterday morning while the Apple site was down, and got a confirmation e-mail right away. I was able to log into my AT&T account and view the order status as "back-ordered" yesterday.

Now when I do that, it fails to find the order, whether by order# or phone#.

I was concerned while ordering, because the website prefilled my billing address with my previous address, even though we moved seven months ago and I definitely changed my address in the system (confirmed later).

I'm now worried they've cancelled my order and not told me.

(sigh)

You are correct, there is an audience for it. But you chose to take the entire overall statement/argument out of context; along with missing my point.

Either way, I can see it as being useful for some- but not 98% as the claim. Not drinking that kool aid, it's tainted.

I live in West Virginia and will be going to the Wal-Mart that's 6 miles away. I'm sure that there won't be too many people there. I work in Tyson's Corner, VA so I make over $5,000 a year compared to West Virginians.

I tried to place an upgrade order via Apples site several times yesterday between 4am (est) and 5am. I kept getting error messages, so on my morning commute on the train (5:30am EST) I tried AT&Ts website from my 3GS and I was able to order a 32gb iPhone 4 for myself and my wife within 10 minutes. Both orders went through on the first try and I received confirmation emails instantly after completing the order. Guess I got lucky and beat the rush.

In responce to a question Ive read a dozen times reading through this thread, when I check my order status via the link in my confirmation email from AT&T it shows my order date as "Jun 15, 2010".

This is BS

Are those of us with preorders going to need to wait in a line when we go to pick up the phone at the store? I can't miss work, so won't be able to make it there until ~5:30. I was going to get it mailed to me to avoid the crowd, but AT&T doesn't let you ship the phone to any address other than the billing address.

I still have to take the day off work to get my phone even know I am getting it mailed. I wanted to have it sent to my work address but they would not do it.

Two pre-orders for the same number????

I did a pre-order at at&t.com earlier in the day but never got a confirmation email, so at 4:30 (PDT) I went to apple.com and it let me pre-oder from them and I received the confirmation email from apple for delivery on the 24th. Today I can see the at&t has the order in their system that I placed and says it is "in progress" and order date of 6-16, I can also see it in apple's order status, so how does this work? Will I get two phones at the subsidized price for the same line or is one of them going to cancel the order.

Usually Apple allows you to pre-sign for your shipment. You wait until it ships, then check your order status on Apple's website and printout a form that you sign and hang on your door. Depending on shipping method, you can either instruct them to leave it someplace, or have them leave it with a neighbor who must sign for it.
