In most cases, AT&T is handling the backbone networks for the above mentioned examples. Give em a break. We see this all the time, ala, xBOX, Wii, PS3, etc.....

I am going to say...........10,000,000 iphones sold on launch day
I doubt it. One of Apple's suppliers was claiming a monthly supply of components equal to about 3 million units.

My guess is that nearly a million units might have been sold on launch day, but not 10 million. Ten million is more than the projected iPhone total for the CY2010.

Man... how many millions will they sell on launch day alone!!? Could this possibly become Apple's largest launch day to date?

At least a million?

Maybe more than three millions worldwide.

I'm not sure how other phone manufacture folks feel about this...

I hear that the National Security Agency has some pretty nifty computers that can handle a lot of processing. Maybe AT&T should just buy an Echelon system to handle iPhone pre-orders.

Get real.

I though Echelon was software for data mining. Don't see how this would help. How about some servers running Linux or Solaris. Heck, apple sells more than a million songs a day, they can sell ATT some servers running Snow Leopard that can handle a million iphones.

You should probably be the one getting a reality check.

AT&T logs billions of transactions every day. Every single phone call, every text, every HTTP request on its network. Go look at your phone statement. They keep track of everything so they can bill you.

You honestly believe that the network runs off of the same servers that host their website and online store?

Really?

Edit: it's not just one big computer sitting in the basement labeled "AT&T server"

I couldn't get through yesterday the numerous times I tried. Looks like I'll be camping out in hopes of getting one of the first-come first-serve iPhones. Otherwise I'll just wait it out and get it later in July or August when there's plenty of stock and shorter lines at stores.

Instead of camping out, why not just wait until July or August anyway? Is it so important that you need one on the first day? It's just a phone. Isn't your time worth anything to you?

(that question is posed to EVERYONE ELSE who seems to think their life is over now that they can't get one on the first day)

its seems like the early adopters are going to get hammered when they try to activate their device. another system crash.

So I guess ATT and/or Apple is not allowed to have server issues with requests when Twitter and Facebook have had the server issues as well at times. RIM has had server crashes as well affecting worldwide usage. If they can crash, why can't ATT? It's not an excuse and they should have been better prepared, but it happens. I am sure there will be other issues next Thursday with all the activations as well.

Here's my confirmation:

iPhone Order Details:

Order Transaction Number: XXXX

I'm still not entirely sure my order though AT&T will be fulfilled since I never got a confirmation. Maybe that will come today.

That was the state of my pre-order as well, I never received a confirmation. Yesterday there was a pending charge in my bank account for the charge and I could go online at attwireless and see the order "in progress". Today the charge was removed and I received an email that my order was cancelled because they were un-able to "verify the information". I can still see the order on attwireless.com as "in progress" but basically I think I'm hosed.

While I think the number of people preordering yesterday was probably impressive, I don't think it was anything unheard of. The servers should have been able to handle it.

People are blaming the servers but should we point all the blame to Apple or AT&T? People that know networking know that the packet originates on a pc and ends on a server. There are network hops in between both the originating pc and end server. How do we know the infrastructure between the customer and apple/at&t was sufficient and could handle all packets going back and forth? Dont just blame apple or att and criticize their servers. If the infrastructure between the client/server cant handle the load the packets will never make it to apple/at&t servers.

Not saying that the issues people were facing were right but dont hang apple/att since they arent the only ones who are part of the online transaction space.

Has anyone heard of the iPhone4 insurance they were offering?

I heard one of the sales guys talking to an older couple about it yesterday. Luckily they told him it wasn't worth it, he was pushing it hard though.

Best Buy Pre-orders

My question is, bestbuy was reserving the white iphone4, and now apple is saying they are not available, what's going to happen to those reservations? I reserved a black one, but don't want to lose my reservation ahead of those who ordered the white one... wonder what best buy is going to do?

my experience

Are those of us with preorders going to need to wait in a line when we go to pick up the phone at the store? I can't miss work, so won't be able to make it there until ~5:30. I was going to get it mailed to me to avoid the crowd, but AT&T doesn't let you ship the phone to any address other than the billing address.

I went into an AT&T store yesterday afternoon to preorder. They were taking orders the old fashion way with knucklebuster credit card machines and pen and paper. Some people were getting their orders into the system so they tired to enter mine. They were able to authorize my upgrade but not sell me the phone, so they did the order by hand to enter later.

At the end of the work day 6pm EST I check back in with my rep and the systems were up, but they had not entered any of the hand written sales from the day. They said they would not be able to enter those sales until the end of the business day. So think about how many sales went in later.Yikes! He then enter my sale and I got one of those 5 feet long AT&T recipts! They even allowed me to have it shipped to my office instead of my home.

11:30pm I received the confirmation that my order was being processed..blah blah and that they were doing their best to try to get me my phone by the 24th but may not get it until the 25-28th.

after hours of trying, I made it through on the AT&T site yesterday. as a backup, I also have a phone reserved at the Apple Store. So, I'll wait in line on the 24th...and if that fails, my AT&T order will be in the mail. No confirmation email yet, but I noticed that even though I ordered yesterday, my order status shows an order date of 6/16...

i will have an iPhone 4 by week's end if I have to drive to Cupertino and raid the campus...

I preordered around 3a with AT&T and never got a confirmation email, too. I printed the success screen with the order number and have checked my order status with AT&T about 10 times since then just to make sure it's in their system. Just did it again and it has the correct order date and lists the iPhone 4 as being "In Progress".

Once they get their stuff cleaned up and together, they should mass email out confirmations, just incase!
