Before I fired AT&T I had already gotten in the habit of forcing my iPhone into Edge mode prior to making a conference call just to limit the frequency of call dropping. As such, I only ever experienced slow speeds while surfing and talking at same time.

Well, if you force it to Edge mode, you'll get no data at all while on a call. Edge does not support voice and data at the same time.

Just tried, an yup it sure looks like it. The one that was 8mb + was on LTE, the 2 speed test in the middle were while on a phone call, and the last one at 6mb + was right after I hung up while still on HSPA+.

Att does this on purpose. I have talked to level 2 att tech support. They almost couldn't hold their laughs while I called them out on thus secret throttling. Att assumes most people don't bother checking speed tests while they are on a call.

And the tech support rep first tried the usual Bs excuses about network congestion etc. I told him a ran a speed test at 430am.

Than he went on saying try it 10 miles from where I lived. I have to be at work by 6am. So easy to run speed tests during off peak hours. Same results.

Finally he gave me the scoop. Att "only guaranteed acceptable" data performance if I am in full coverage area. Which I am.

That acceptable speed performance during non network congestion is drums roll......500 kpbs.

So around 0.5mpbs us considered acceptable by att during no congestion.

This honestly aggravates the heck out of me.

When I was evaluating Verizon vs. AT&T for my latest contract I stuck with AT&T. Simultaneous voice and data was one of the perks that kept me on the network. I don't often use it but when I need it I expect it to work.

These carriers need more competition. This is the reason Ma Bell got torn apart the first time. Outrageous anti-consumer behavior that defines monopolistic behavior. I wish the FCC would start cracking down on these companies that lease THE PEOPLE'S airwaves and then stab them in the back.

/end rant

Same boat. I almost switched but that is what kept me... I am filing a complaint against att via FCC website. I encourage you and others to as well if this bothers you!

http://www.fcc.gov/complaints

They have to get complaints before they go and take action.

If that is what they said then there may be a basis for early contract termination? My upload speed during a call is no where near that. Neither are others. Take a look at screen shots from some of earlier posts.

I remember AT&T making a big deal about how you could be on a call and still surf the web, check email, send a picture via MMS etc and Verizon could not do that. I guess we wont see those comercials anymore.

I can so stuff when I'm on a call. Are you saying you can't or are you one of those people that like to have 'pissing contests' with speed tests.

When you're throttled down to 0.09Mbps and you try surfing the web while on a call the call drops. And what's a "speed test pissing contest"? Go away.

Never ever had a call drop while surfing, checking email etc on a call. Do I notice that surfing etc is slower on a call? Yes but I can still surf etc on a call.

And are you throttled at 0.07-0.12 Mbps while performing those activities? Cause when I'm throttled super slow like that both operations cannot be accomplished simultaneously.

Surfed the web, checked email, posted to this forum just fine when on a call and the call didn't drop. No problems.

I just think it's funny because of all the posts in general report that you can talk and surf at the same time on AT&T, and in general no one complains about it. Then a 7 month old thread gets brought back up and everyone is outraged. This has been going on for that long so it obviously isn't affecting people's ability to do what they need.

Look at my post right above. I'm not one to do speed tests but wanted to prove a point.

Old news. At&t has been doing this for a few years now when on a call. Just no one noticed. Been discussed many times on howardforums.

When your speed is dropped that low, especially the upload side of things, it makes any web requests very slow and/or impractical to complete. Sending a file? Forget about it. Remember how long it would take to send an a medium size file (photo, mp3, etc) back in the 56k modem days?? That is the upload speed folks are getting... Not pissing contest, it's crippling.

Yeah the posts / blogs did report on it a few months back. Somehow I missed tho. My speeds have been awful while on a call for a while. I noticed it most w/ my iphone 4S, so they must have started doing this around a year ago. I always just chalked it up to ATTs very inconsistent speed and service. I imagine that most folks assume the same unless they caught one of the articles 7 months ago. To know they do it intentionally really is outrageous.

Wonderful! Then you are quite fortunate and have no issues. However, that does not negate the comments of those, whom are not as fortunate as yourself.

This is a limitation of the phones... AT&T is not throttling. I've noticed this since the speed test app first releaed way back. Your phone is using voice AND data at the same time. Obviously your data speeds will drop. Really now? This is old news. Articles like this are so stupid and have zero merit other than some bored college kid with no time on his hands making up stories for people to get into panzy about.

You couldn't be MORE WRONG!!! Go pop in a T-Mobile sim card into a 4S or 5 and run a speedtest during a call. T-Mobile uses the exact same technology as AT&T and speeds are normal during calls.

It's frustrating when people speak before they do any reading and without any knowledge. It did not always happen. It does not happen on other carriers.

Are you on a grandfathered unlimited plan?

That's a great question.

I have one unlimited line and one 3GB line. Both are throttled during call.

Can anyone with a new data share plan chime in and/or test?

I was asking someone else that said they are over 5GB and didn't get throttled. I wasn't asking you.
