AT&T to Discontinue 'Facebook Phone' HTC First?

Facebook is like a wireless carrier (AT&T, Verizon): people use it but no one really likes Facebook.

It's similiar in the fact I don't want AT&T branding/apps all over my iPhone nor do I want Facebook to take deep control of it.

But I'm just one person - I'm sure everyone shares a different opinion!

This is less about the HTC First and more about Facbook Home - IMO, not sure how anyone thought FB Home would be a widespread success.....

Even for most, a smartphone is more than just a FB hub.

Can they do away with the "chat heads" also? Freaking annoying.

I actually like the chat heads. I wouldn't be against Apple allowing chat apps (including the built in messaging app) to allow users to quickly respond to messages without launching the full app.

This could also work with emails, twitter mentions, etc.

Hmmm, wonder if this will cause BlackBerry to rethink their "Friendster Fone" which they hope to release by Q2 2016.

Yep, as many of us expected. A "facebook" phone is worthless. Facebook's success itself has much much more to do with dumb luck than business acumen or the entrepreneurial spirit.

I feel like part of the reason Facebook failed here is because there wasn't enough marketing hype about it. I mean, come on, I didn't see a single ad even on their own website showing off Home. Despite the announcement they had, they still didn't draw enough attention toward the product before it was released. Just my two sense..

Now, this is not to say that even if there was enough excitement about the product, it would be successful.

I wonder if anyone on FB is talking about this now? The whole FB phone idea is nothing more than FB's overinflated perception of its own self worth. Sure, my older boys are on FB a lot, but I'm not sure even they would want FB to be the main screen of their phones - and they are most definitely the typical teenager who doesn't realize the "relationships" they have on FB are mostly bogus.

I expect, at some point in the near future, a backlash against FB or at least a major defection of users or non-use by formerly avid FBer's.

seriously? It's been out a month, that's not even long enough fro most stores to get stock

Open up your eyes. There was no demand from consumers. Compare that to iPhone releases and you can begin to understand why this "Facebook phone" is being ousted by AT&T. Just a different wheel, nothing dramatically new.

Exactly this. Facebook is one of the few games in town with the widespread adoption that makes a social network useful.

Chat heads have potential, but I find myself removing them from the screen more often than I expected. If tapping the chat menu at the top of the screen made them appear (in other words, I'm telling the phone that I'm interested in viewing chat-related UI), then that would be good, but with them always-on until you remove them, they just get in the way.

What had a shorter shelf life: the HTC First or the Microsoft Kin??

If this story is true, HTC will just reload a stock version of Android (with their skin) onto the returned HTC First phones and resell them.

There is a stigma attached to being "that guy" that doesn't put Facebook down. You don't want to be that obsessive person that is always Facebook, Facebook, Facebook.

Having this phone, makes you that person right out of the gate. Nerds will point a finger at you and call you a nerd when you wield one of these phones.

People enjoy McDonalds, no one wears McDonalds themed clothes. ;)

Doesn't bother me... I've never used FB, never will...

But a FB phone was clearly a fail.

I will cherish the day when FB will be irrelevant...
