I couldn't get my head around the marketing. The ad I remember was Mark Z announcing to his staff that it was being released today and the guy who had it on his phone was watching screaming goats, cart racing, IMs from his friends, etc. and not listening to what MZ was saying. I couldn't believe that this was how they would market the product. I guess it was honest at least, but who wants a product that is intrusive and distracts you from what you should be paying attention to? Apparently, not even teen-age girls.

Reminds me of these:

Also failed horribly.

This is just too funny. For someone who created the world's biggest social network Zuckerberg sure comes across as someone with zero social skills or knowledge.

This is exactly what Facebook deserves.

Well that escalated quickly!

Now on a serious note, did they really expect to sell a phone with Facebook Home being the only key featured?

I have seen about 4 different ads on the television...

I feel like part of the reason Facebook failed here is because there wasn't enough marketing hype about it. I mean, come on, I didn't see a single ad even on their own website showing off Home. Despite the announcement they had, they still didn't draw enough attention toward the product before it was released. Just my two sense..

Now, this is not to say that even if there was enough excitement about the product, it would be successful.

HTC First? More like HTC....er.... Worst! Ha.;)

it's actually a fantastic phone. nice screen decent specs andgreat build quality. also takes about 3 seconds to turn off Facebook home and turn it into basically stock android

Home is a very well designed implementation of a PRODUCT nobody wants. An extremely talented design team cannot make up for a bad product. Mark thought that just by hiring great designers (former Apple allstars), that it'd be all he needed for a great product. Few people seem to understand the whole, and like to focus on just single attributes of the process (design, specs, features, etc). Total > than the sum of its parts, as Jobs likened the process to.

The real loser here is HTC, that company can just not get a break.

Facebook on the otherhand? Lick wounds, carry on. It probably even scaled back its ambitions from a full phone to this as a trial after internal self doubts.

Facebook has accepted it's own hype. It's trying to be bigger than it should be. It's not the whole dinner, just a side dessert (if that).

This is bad news for... Apple.

/will be the next article from some analyst or pundit.

I'm thrilled. People are finally pushing back a little against facebooks intrusiveness in their lives. 15K handsets is sad--that's so few it actually might become a collectors item someday. Antiques Roadshow!
If there is a fire sale I might pick one up

Except Mark Zuckerberg.

Some people equate Zuckerberg to the likes of Steve Jobs and Bill Gates...you know, a tech industry visionary.

To me Zuckerberg seems more like a geek that got really lucky (he was at the right place at the right time).

I was just at AT&T the other day with a family member looking for a phone to upgrade and they had these all lined up in various colors trying to entice along side , i think, with the whole $50 w/two year contract placed near the other cheap smartphones. The back of those feels like its a cheap eBay case that doesn't come off. Look alone I'd pass.

Aren't these the same phones android users are blaming iphone users on the development team for the lack of android widgets on this?

This should have been a huge hit with 6th grade girls

I love when people comment like this when in actuality, "6th grade girls" have moved on to other social media formats and the older generation (read: the demographic currently buying the iPhone) use Facebook much more regularly.

To not be a typical Apple fan and say 'LOL, IPHONE 5 FTW!', this was actually a pretty decent phone, with pretty much stock Jelly Bean Android on and the ability to turn the Facebook features off anyway. AT&T sells far worse budget phones, but just failed to market this at all. AT&T suck basically.
