“Ultimately we’d like to see tablet manufacturers build just one tablet."

I wonder which version the mobile data provider is pulling for...?

meanwhile europe is laughing at this. i just got a prepaid rechargable sim with 1GB for 9€ in spain

Yes, we get it. Data is cheap and plentiful in Europe.

In Spain, the average price of a liter of gasoline is the equivalent of $2 USD. That's about $7.57 USD a gallon.

Things have a way of equaling out.

You seem to not get it at all, $5 for 250MB is ridiculous, $500 for 50GB is way too ridiculous as well... What can you do with 250MB a day? watch 5 youtube videos and use up all your data for the day? it is R-I-D-I-C-U-L-O-U-S we are not talking about getting it all for nothing, but would you rather buy a DVD for $15 or pay $50 to see it on your phone? How about AT&T gets a more reasonable data plan than their current rip off prices?

Hello? Reading comprehension? This is not a MONTHLY rate. It is if you cannot access WiFi and need cellular just for RIGHT NOW, just for TODAY. When that happens to me I have to buy the $15.00 plan, and if I don 't use all the data in one month I waste it. So I don't buy it often! The $15.00 for 3 months for $5.00 for one day is a way better deal!!!

It's for a niche market who doesn't want to pay $30 for a months worth of data... it's for someone who just wants to to have access for a day without having to pay more.

If you don't like their plans, there's Verizon, Sprint and tMobile that will happily take your money... oh wait, that's right... they don't offer daily plans.

Many hotels charge $14.95 a day for wifi. (yes, some are free)
Airlines charge in the $10 a day for wifi, and then only while on the plane.
Cruise ships charge... well, don't go there.

So, the one day charge is steep, but if you only need it a few days a year, not bad.

The 3 month plan is "sort of" a rollover. I like it better than the currently monthly. We often do not need it, but the thing keeps renewing. Luckily, the credit card company helped me out there. I cancelled the card it was going to, so the monthly charge stopped. Stupid me did not stop it sooner.

The 3 months works for us. For some of you data hungry types, it may suck. Just the way it is. Sorry.

I am planning to get new ipad when it comes out. Think about not getting cellular option, but with new ATT plans for low data users like me, it is looking like I will get the cell option.

“Ultimately we’d like to see tablet manufacturers build just one tablet."

Then maybe you and the other cell carriers could subsidize the cost of the cellular module. Shouldn't be more than what, $20 or $30 per device, right? Cell carriers would subsidize that measly little component expense for all iPads, whether or not the user springs for a cellular data plan and uses the cellular module.

So what's in it for the carriers? Why would they want to pay even the small component cost? Because that would make it much easier for anyone with an iPad to sign up for the $5/day plan etc. If they bought a wi-fi-only iPad, there would be no chance of any impulse-buy cellular data use. But if all iPads have a cellular module, I'd guess that enough of their users will either spring for occasional short-term cellular data use or pay monthly. The carriers would probably be able to make back their subsidy cost.

Which doesn't make the cost any less exorbitant or the comparison any less valid. A single day of service AND a cap of 250MB on that single day for $5 is absurd.

its for the impulsive challenged people who need something NOW

hotels charge for wifi so this is not a bad deal if you need some data quick

wish they would do this for the iphone. I pay 20 bucks a month for 200mbs and don't even use that much. $25 for 3 months of 1gb is great deal. Sadly they will never do that

This is the first time I actually agree with an At&t plan... not the $5 a day thing... honestly it should be $5 for the month of 250mb... but the $25 for 1gb for 3 months is one of the most logical things At&t has ever done, short of just rolling over your data. They should offer these kinds of prices to their Post paid iPhone plans and maybe I won't ditch them in December.

The $5 a day plan is a complete waste... why would anyone buy it?

I mean at least the $25 plan gives you 3 months access. So if you use data more than once a month, why would you pay each day when you could save money and get the 3 month plan??

I would think even the most minimal data user would want access at LEAST 5 times over a 3 month period.

Anyone supporting the $5 plan is crazy, I don't care if it's for a "minimal user" it's a complete, absolute rip off!

So I don't see these plans available. I take it you need to be on a Mobile Share plan to have access? Only options I have are the outrageous DataConnect plans.

I see them when I log in to my account on my iPad. I also have an account set up for my Nexus 7 and the plans are available for it as well.

When I try to access the account info from the iPad it gives me an error saying I can't see the info from there. Hmmm. Our ATT plans are the old unlimited plans ... I was just betting I'd need to change to Mobile Share to have access to the $5 option which is all I need. I use the iPad as a POS system once every 3 months and use less than 250MB.

This is all I see:

Plan Name Original Cost Monthly Cost Data
DataConnect 250MB on LTE for iPad $14.99 $14.99 250MB
Rate Plans Available
Plan Name Original Cost Monthly Cost Data
DataConnect on LTE for iPad 3GB $30.00 $30.00 3 GB
DataConnect on LTE for iPad 5GB $50.00 $50.00 5 GB

I don't have mobile share. The only AT&T accounts I have open are data only accounts for my iPad and Nexus 7.

Thanks for the info. I'll likely have to call ATT after our event tonight. I don't want to mess with anything and end up with no data for tonight!

ATT shoots themselves in the foot yet again

ATT didn't learn anything from their terrible airport phone card vending machines of years ago? Isn't it terrible publicity to advertise something at an outrageous price? Disclosure: I hate ATT with a passion.:(

Do not enter the credentials for your existing AT&T account. Create a new account in the iPad cellular settings using an email address and password.

No. The prepaid iPad plans are completely separate and do not require any other plan.

I would also recommend *not* to use the option to link the iPad plan to your phone plan, because that makes it a postpaid plan that can only be cancelled by calling AT&T (whereas with the prepaid plans, you can simply cancel automatic renewal in the iPad settings where applicable). However, this may be irrelevant for the new $5 and $25 passes, since they don't appear to have automatic renewal anyway.

So here's what I think I see here. For the occasional need for cellular, one could spend $25 per quarter with AT&T for 1GB of data: $100/year.

If, like in my case, voip is "good enough" for all "cell phone" usage (and it certainly is for me), this appears to become an up to $100/year (voip) cell phone enabler. In other words, someone- like me- could use their iPad Mini with cellular (plus earbuds with microphone) and this plan to have up to always available cellular service via AT&T for $100/year.

As is right now, I use Verizon's $20 1GB plan when needed and it looks like I'm going to cap out at $80 for the whole year. I've only reached the 1GB limit once and typically finish the month having used only about 300MB or so. So, it looks like I can buy an AT&T sim, sign up for the $100/qtr plan and probably have year-round cellular service when needed.

Since voip covers my phone needs well enough and I can already (unlimited) text via talkatone, I'm perceiving this is a $100/year solution for people like me. Or am I missing something here?

I'm not thrilled but the the $25 for 1 GB over three months would work for me while on vacation. I've learned from experience that movies over cell data doesn't work in most places I travel. To compensate, I use cell data for map data and email and RV park wifi for movies.

In checking my att ipad, we have

250 MB 1 day no renew $5
250 MB 30 days $15
1GB 3 months no renew $25
3 GB 30 days $30
5 GB 30 days $50

So it looks like there is a better variety.

If you have a data plan with a carrier already, why should you have to pay again just to use a separate device? You are already paying for connection to the carriers' network. Can you imagine if you had to pay your ISP for each device at home? One fee for your desktop computer, another for your laptop, another for your game console, another for your streaming puck, another for your wifi-iPad, etc......
