If this was the only thing they did your post would have some merit. AT&T has raised rates on every plan, trying to get people to join family plans that are more expensive, charging more for data, not honoring their contracts etc. But yeah, go head and complain about Murica because you think telecom monopolies are awesome. Meanwhile cool aid drinkers like yourself who bend over and take whatever they give you are the real problem.
Monopolies? There are about 10 different wireless providers I can switch to in my area. Where is the monopoly?

This unlimited data plan price hasn't increased in price since 2007, has it?

I'm trying to think of my other utility rates that haven't increased in the last 9 years. Cable? Nope, that's increased. Electricity? Nope, that's gone up to. City water.. Increased. Natural gas. Also more expensive now than 9 years ago.

And honestly, of the utilities above, the ONLY one that I can look at say "wow, it's a crap-ton better now than it was 9 years ago" is my AT&T service. Having gone from EDGE speeds to 80mbps LTE in my market wouldn't make me pissed off to pay an extra $5/month for, with it being the first increase in that plan in 9 years. But to each their own.

Price goes up $5 for the first time since iPhone 3G... And people are gonna complain. America is great.

This is nowhere near the levels of evil that is Verizon.
Though you can bet that I'm going to complain about having my data usage characterized as being "excessive" and having it throttled to next to nothing.

Thus is why I have T-Mobile.
Technically speaking, with this $5 price hike, AT&T's grandfathered unlimited data plan cost the same as new T-Mobile's plan.

Well, AT&T's cheapest individual plan does not include unlimited calls (which I believe is 450 peak minutes), tethering (T-Mobile includes 14GB tethering), nor T-Mobile's fantastic freebies (e.g., free 802.11ac WiFi router, free 128 Kbps international data roaming, free calls, messages, LTE data in Canada and Mexico) but with unlimited messaging, both cost $95.

Capped data plans started because of people who abused the unlimited service in the past.

Hike it up more so they suffer like the rest of us.
Bull Honkey.
Capped Data Started when the Greedy cell industry got wise to the rapid growth in smart phone technology, and the increased demand for high bandwidth to supplement the increasing application data capacity. Unlimited data is the ugly mole on AT&T's legacy. They can't rid of it fast enough to fully capitalize on the value of data.

If AT&T wanted to get rid of it faster, they could have raised the rate by $20/month, like Verizon just did and prevent folks from getting subsidized phones as long as they keep the plan (like Verizon has done for many years).

They removed my ability to roam on cruise ships a couple months ago. That was pretty rude and they basically told me what it was if I didn't like it, I could cancel. Yeah of course they want me to drop my unlimited plan.

This deal is getting worse all the time!

This thread is about AT&T. Are you sure you aren't confusing this with an AT-AT?
Importantly, they are two different things. One is said to be a huge destructive machine that tramples upon the small and defenceless, making lives a misery across the galaxy. The other is an AT-AT, a made-up thing out of the Star Wars films.

I figured they would have at least gone up $10! I love how they will let people that don't want to pay the extra $5 out of their contract with no ETF. You'll have some idiots though that will complain over the $5.

Yes, idiots. Same people have no problems shelling out Starbucks money EVERY DAY for simple coffee.

Obviously nobody on unlimited leaves for $ 5. Instead of 3G you now have LTE.
While all these characters are greedy, they do have costs for improving infrastructure.

I don't like to be nickel and dimed with fees, like $ 45 administration fee, when you buy a new phone.
But, I understand it's sooooo time consuming and labor intensive to register a new phone IMEI number.

For some reason there seems to be disproportional hate of AT&T amongst those in the Apple Camp.

I've used AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile in various degrees for the needs of the seven cellular users in my family, for years. While it's true I stay on top of billing and terms of service variations over time, especially since I myself use 30GB data / month, I personally prefer, and have had the best call quality, pricing and customer service from AT&T.

YMMV

Imagine believing this.

Capped data started because AT&T and Verizon realized there was a growing demand for data and that with a flat rate all you can eat model, they weren't gaining additional profit for that demand.

If it were about abuse of the network then they would be throttling their tiered plans rather than charging overages. Follow the money and you'll always get the answer as to why.

Does anyone still use ATT? I a a physician, need to be connected everywhere. I switched to T-mobile and have not looked back. I had ATT form 1999 - 2014. Particularly happy to no longer getting a big surprise roaming crap form overseas travel Never could get ATT to give me an honest answer about coverage, and bogus plans.

Actually, no. No one uses AT&T anymore. Sigh. I use AT&T. It's much cheaper for me AND I get more from it.

2 telecoms that are the same price is not much of a choice.
There are two other tier 1 carriers you can choose from.

Then if you absolutely require the coverage of AT&T or Verizon, there are several MVNOs or prepaid carriers who share their coverage but charge a much lower price. AT&T even owns one of them (Cricket).

Oh no, $35 for unlimited data! What will people do?!?!?

Meanwhile in Canada I pay that much for 500mb
Of course, Europeans gloat that they get unlimited everything for $35 or less. When you read the fine print it isn't quite that good (pre-paid MVNO plans with throttled data, etc) but it is still cheaper than North America.
