I just signed a 2 year contract with an el cheap phone to wait for the iPhone, do a family plan and get 3 iphones in june.

I guess I will not get the discount.

Darn it.

If they are subsidizing the iPhone to the tune of $200, then maybe (start a new rumor) the phone is unlocked!!!!!!!!

I just did the exact same thing a few weeks ago! Could you get the discount by signing a new 2-year contract?

WildCowboy and arn:

Damn good reporting. You bring clarity to the reliability of this and other rumors by properly contrasting them with a cited accuracy record. Keep it up guys.

Is this really happening? My mom wants me to switch back to AT&T cause I have verizon and my bill is higher, but nother besides the iPhone compares with the enV that AT&T offers.

well that would be to great ...but I question it.

I'll be ready to spend 399/499 on launch(depending on how much $ I have)

Just saw this. Wow! Maybe Apple can find a loophole that allows them out of the exclusivity contract!! :D I want an 8 "gigabit" iPhone!

HERE HERE!!!!

I like that idea. Even now though I am considering buying an iPhone even on AT&T's network once my contract with Sprint is up. Hopefully by that time the iPhone is as stable and feature filled as it can be and maybe AT&T will offer insurance for it through Asurion.

Wait so those of us with current Iphone's and 2 year forced contracts do we get the $199.99 deal for the new phones?!

If not Im going to be highly pissed.

All I know is..

.. that no one reduces prices of anything that is exceeding the sales expectations of the seller.. ;)

I don't understand one thing however - Any one buying the iPhone from anywhere in the US has to get AT&T service any ways (at least Apple and AT&T think that way) - so what makes AT&T offer a rebate if you buy the iPhone + 2-yr service from them?

May be it's a smart move to get business from the vast percentage of unlockers that currently give their money to T-Mobile?

I don't see it.

Too good to be true.

This poses problems for iPhones sold at Apple stores. Would those be eligible for a rebate if you prove a new AT&T Contract?

I just don't see it.

Not so sure

Another key statement made in this report is that the rebated iPhone would be locked to AT&T, with the implication that the new iPhone may otherwise be more open to other carriers.

Maybe the exclusivity of AT&T and Apple contract is not so exclusive, or more limited.

Still, I have my doubts.

Perhaps we will, if we extend our contracts for two more years?

More than likely....

You can probably sell your old iPhone for about $200, and use that money to get a subsidized 3G model - you just have to be willing to take your current contract out another 2 years. :D

To those of us that are on other networks or that may not use the data plan, any iPhone will suffice...

I'm under an AT&T plan with a cheap subsidized phone, I wonder if I'll be eligible for the deal as well. Just out of curiosity, I'll stop by an AT&T store tomorrow to see how they handle deals on other smart phones for those of us already on a contract.

yep, just read the article (cnn.com!) and indeed it's got to be thinner ... could not be otherwise.

Conflicting rumors = two models?

iPhone nano
EDGE only
2.8in screen (but same resolution as 3.5 in screen)
Smaller and 2.5 mm thinner
8 GB $199
16 GB $299

iPhone
3G + GPS
Two cameras (for video iChat)
Same size (or slightly thicker)
Same screen size (possibly OLED)
8 GB $399
16 GB $499

Prices with 2-year AT&T contract (available unlocked at higher price in other countries?)

I welcome the subsidy on the iPhone, but i wouldn't be surprised if this Fortune reporter/writer was wrong.

The biggest thing that i thought made the article kinda BS, is when the writer said that the screen would be 2.8" [iThink] instead of the existing 3.5" touchscreen. I hope that Apple doesn't do this, it would just make the 'internet experience' on the iPhone just that much worse than it already is.

...

No.

I would think not, however, it's kind of weird since with the iPhone there was no discount whatsoever ie it's not that ATT was subsidizing anything at all. ATT simply took advantage of the iPhone to impose 2Y contracts, isn't that right ?

Exactly.

I highly doubt you'll see unsubsidized iPhones the same price as the iPod Touches...

This idea that Steve Jobs is going to walk on stage with a phone thicker than the current model he showed off 18 months ago amuses me. Thin is clearly one of the design trends at Apple.

The width reported is pretty close to iPod Touch width, which probably won't be far off.

That's awesome. But I'd much rather buy it at an :apple: store.... It seems kinda lame waiting in line at an AT&T store. But if I can only get the discount at the AT&T store, I won't care!
