Why doesnt anyone try to see if they get the same 12GB cap reaponce, that way the will be more validity.

In June 2010, AT&T said that 98% of its users use less than 2GB of data... so I'd guess that the top 5% is somewhere below 2GB.

I'm guessing that since the top data plan currently offered is 2GB then AT&T would consider anything over that to be excessive and would throttle it.

A 12GB soft cap would be nice but I really don't believe they'd let it go that high. Slow data is better than no data and its better than being charged hundreds of dollars in overage.

I just hope my "unlimited" plan still gets grandfathered to 4G whenever a true 4G iPhone is released.

Exactly. I have no doubt that the top 2% and 5% numbers in terms of GB usage have gone up since last year, but nowhere near 12GB per month. Unless AT&T was just flat out lying last year.

I stream Slacker at work and watch an occasional Netflix Family Guy
and last month I used 7GB. You don't need to tether anymore to use
a lot of data. Granted I could cache the Slacker stations and use a bit
less. As iCloud is implemented we will only start using more and more
data.

I think people who use that much data are hardcore Xbox Live users. Not sure how much "data" that would be though for an average game.

Any "hardcore" console gamer won't be tethering to play online. Hell, I won't even use wireless to play on.

I just got off the phone with a friend that manages a local AT&T store at the Mall.
He told me unlimited data users that go over 2GB's in a billing cycle will be throttled down to Edge speeds till the end of their cycle.
I asked him if he's positive its only 2GB and he said that's what he was told.
So take this with a grain of salt since its not an official AT&T announcement but like most of you guessed it will be nowhere near a 12GB limit.

Is that confirmed? ;)

THis seems much more reasonable but still makes me wonder what the point is to holding onto the unlimited plan then as edge is pretty bad

Lol :D
Not really confirmed but makes sense knowing how AT&T is.
But like you said why hold on to unlimited if you're going to pay an extra $5 and get Edge after 2GB?
I guess you wont get overages but the speed will be a drag.

Do you know if this change will allow one to bypass the ETF? I mean it is changing what I had initially signed up for.

I know you are more in tune with these sorts of things so figured I'd ask ya

I have had my 3G since August 2009 and I have used a TOTAL of 8.2GB of 'Cellular Network Data" according to my Usage page (which I have never reset.)

I do most of my heavy surfing at home within my wifi network.

I am in the same boat. Since August 2008, I have used a total of 4.5 gigs of cell data

Seriously, why do I have unlimited...

Aren't they going with the top 5% of those still ounlimited though? I would guess that a large percentage of the low bandwidth users switched to tiered plans to save money which would make the top 5% higher.

If they limit (which nobody knows what they will do) to 2GB, I'll leave on principal- I am so sick of them in all aspects of my life. Work (7 lines) DSL, and Home Uverse, and my 3 iPhones.
They can't really do much right in my world tba.

Well you'll save a whopping $5/month, or better yet, save yourself 15, and drop to 200mb for some emailing. /s. either way you loose.

Hope Sprint gets it, as well as T-moble (along with a FCC decline on the buyout- not holding my breath) and we'll all be better off in 2012.

T-mobile already has the speed caps and have had for some time now. All of their data plans are unlimited with different capacity speed caps.

That is a good question.
Let me call and bug him again to see what he says.

Edit.
Ok he said that there wont be no ground for getting out of your contract without an ETF cause you're still getting unlimited data. Just slower speeds.
But I didnt expect a different answer from someone that works for AT&T:)
I guess we just gotta wait and see how it plays.

I have fast internet at work and home... which is where I am at 90% of my daily life, so I am not a data hog. I feel like I use my data a lot when I'm outside of work and home... but I only average 2.5 gigs/mo between my AT&T and Verizon data plans... but most of my data usage is with Verizon. I prefer to connect to wifi since it generally faster than my 3G or 4G LTE speeds. I don't need unlimited myself, but I'm keeping as long as I can... because it isn't offered anymore.

Where this hurts... are for those who don't have access to cable/dsl/"f/o"... because of location or jobs that keep them at remote areas... so their data would be higher than the average user. As for those who do have access to fast internet, but choose to use their mobile data as their primary internet through unauthorized tethering and use it for gaming, torrents, etc... well... it may have ruined the experience for those that don't have access to fast internet and moderate users.

I can talk to Rep A, B, C, D, and all the way to Z and double Z... and I would get as many different responses from them.

Goes to show, there is no exact answer on how much AT&T considers top 5%.

true but we do have some statement from AT&T that we can figured out roughly were the top 5% are.

AT&T has already stated that the 2G plan would cover over 95% of there users that would never go over it.
So this leads us to believe that the throttling point is going to be between 2-3 gigs. Very safe to say that. Hell I would not be surprised if they start the throttling at 2 gigs.
Someone will need to test to see when it is. I may do it close to an end of a month and just try to intentionally spike my usage in the last few days of a month just to find out roughly where it is.

I would say no. It does not changed your contract in any way. You are still getting unlimited data and no where in your contract does it say there is a promised speed. It is still unlimited but they just throttle you when you use too much.

Im so worried now, I didnt make this up. I will call again and speak with different at&t cust. Service reps and see if they say the soft cap will be at 12GB.

Oh boy...by that logic ATT could impose a .0000000001kb/sec data rate after 2 gigs. Still unlimited!!

Thanks for checking though:)

Why are you worried? Do you REALLY expect to hit a huge amount of data usage? How much data have you used up to this point in the average month?
