These are the portions of the terms that deal with this topic:
“To get all the credits, the discounted device must remain on installment agreement and you must keep eligible service for entire installment term.”
The device will remain on the installment because you will not upgrade the line through AT&T. (That’s not to say you can’t bring on a different phone). No problems there. You will keep service on the line. No problem there.
“If you upgrade or pay up/off the installment agreement on the discounted device early, your credits may cease.”
Upgrade, again won’t do that. Pay up/off, here’s the possible kicker. Notice, however, that it says credits may cease. Maybe this is wishcasting, but with some evidence that AT&T does not actually enforce this (reported by Reddit (lol) users as well as macrumor users), I can see how credits could continue to be applied.
I am not an AT&T employee, but some evidence (although anecdotal) indicates it’s possible you can pay off the phone and continue to receive credits. I would love if more users could share their experiences to shed more light on this subject.
Theses are the terms of the current offer and you can do exactly thatInteresting. Is this for the current iPhone 13 offer or the prior $700 iPhone 12 offer?
I had wondered if AT&T would stop by credits if I bought, say, an iPhone 14 outright and off contract, and just swapped my SIM from my iPhone 12 Pro on the $700 offer to the iPhone 14.
Thank you! This must be the internal literature for AT&T?Terms on the offer. One can pay off device once credits begin and credits continue until upgrade is done or line is canceled. So essentially have to maintain 36 months active service to maintain full value
See post #1652 with what looks to be employee literature. Once credits start, you can pay the full amount off and continue to receive credits unless you upgrade or cancel service.not a chance. If you pay off the device credits will cease. That would make zero sense for them to
the credits are to reduce payments towards the overall amount owed

Through AT&T, since the line is being upgraded not the devicethat’s interesting !
but is trade in for an upgrade after paid off = through att or apple? Or both?
What do they mean by “device must remain active”?@hbenitez09
What is with the last line? - device must remain active.
Does this stop you from say trading device into apple for a newer one?
it means obey the Death Star and corporate Sith lord , they gotchaWhat do they mean by “device must remain active”?
Not at all doubting you, but how positive are you that I could buy a new device at full price and swap the sim while maintaining future iPhone 12 device credits? I ask because if I eventually do that and the device credits stop, my wife will be very, very upset…an outcome worse than having to pay off the remaining payments.Theses are the terms of the current offer and you can do exactly that
I’m not positive at all lol. If you try that your doing so at your own risk. I’d love to hear from any AT&T employees on this forum on this topicI’m not positive at all lol. If you try that your doing so at your own risk. Maybe an att employee can chime in
It is internal. Honesty to those asking not sure about the last lines meaning.Thank you! This must be the internal literature for AT&T?

What about buying the “upgrade” phone outright from Apple using the promo phone as trade in value? What about at bestbuy? It is internal. Honesty to those asking not sure about the last lines meaning.
I haven’t worked in mobility in a while but I have access to the promos.
One thing I do know is att considers purchasing an iPhone on apples iPhone upgrade program as an upgrade and in that scenario credits would seize.
I would likely let the line be and do a cross upgrade when possible for future releases. The fact that they made installments 3 years is crazy
The link you provided says up to $1000 so looks like it.Does anyone know if I purchase a 13 Pro from Walmart (it's $50 off upfront, $26.37/month for 36 months) if I would be eligible for the $800 monthly credits by trading in my XS? Walmart has a page with trade-in info that still shows the old value of $700 but I figure that the trade in goes through AT&T and not Walmart so I should get the new value.
I did do a few online chats with AT&T a couple of times and each time the rep told me that the only way to get trade in credits is if I buy the phone through AT&T which is clearly not true
I ordered thru Apple and the trade-in for my X was $700 when I completed the order. Then I saw ATT updated the trade-in amount to $800 so I called ATT and the CSR said the trade in value would be $800 when I actually send in my phone. I hope the CSR is correct since my paperwork shows $700.Does anyone know if I purchase a 13 Pro from Walmart (it's $50 off upfront, $26.37/month for 36 months) if I would be eligible for the $800 monthly credits by trading in my XS? Thanks for that. Think I'll go through with the order. Well, i think the point is getting the device unlocked, which you only can after paying it off. I can then activate the esim with a different provider and stop carrying 2 phones. Or when traveling internationally, I can use a local SIM and not use IDP.that’s interesting !

Though….. that last highlighted sub bullet point makes it sound like you have to keep device active on account to get credits. Even if you pay it off. So not sure what the point would be of paying off
lol
I called up AT&T today to ask them if the credits continue if you put your SIM card in a new phone purchased without a subsidy. At first they said that the credits would stop if the IMEI didn’t match the offer phone. Then they said the credits would stop if the device model didn’t match the original offer model. And then when I further questioned why the credits would stop in either of these scenarios, because I would be remaining on AT&T, they then said credits would not be impacted if I swapped my SIM into a different/new device. Long story short, that will allow me to get a future iPhone (say the 14) and still earn credits on my 12 Pro. Sounds like AT&T doesn’t know the facts, as usual.
Frankly, I can’t, but it’s a bit of ammunition if they stop my credits. I can say “on Sept 35, 2021 one of your customer service representatives told me my credits would continue”.how can you be sure? Sounds like you got both responses
maybe they just told you what you wanted to hear to get you off the phone?
Not sure how much gain by this scenario. You still get credits but if 12pro not getting used it’s just losing value till the end then how much worth. If looking at next year, probably getting close to even. So just payoff and sell, trade or whatever.I called up AT&T today to ask them if the credits continue if you put your SIM card in a new phone purchased without a subsidy.
