So after it is unlocked, does it still work with my AT&T account and original phone number? Is it basically all the same afterwards except it is now unlocked even after restoring in iTunes? Do you just restore from backup and everything is back as it was? Or will AT&T see that it is unlocked and suspend service just to be pricks?
I know, lots of ?'s but I'm just ignorant on the process.
Yes, it will still work w/ AT&T and no one will suspend your device.
Restore from iTunes backup just so you don't setup everything again, not really needed.

Thanks for the info. Still have over a year to go with my iPhone 5 but am planning on biting the bullet on my ETF which will be about $200 this Dec. Gonna switch to T-Mobile with my wife who's contract is up in Dec. on her 4S. It'll save us $80+ a month.

If you pay the ETF. They would have to unlocked it for free for you if you want to save the $2

no prob, just make sure you get that unlock msj to popup in iTunes.

thanks for you and the other persons suggestion I am good to go.

There was a 24-48 delay because a back up in AT&T system but i'm good :) thanks for your suggestion

Going through the website to initiate the unlock, I received the 14-day message. The next day I called ATT tech support and the rep did the unlock. I did the restore on the 4s and connected to iTunes and did not get a message confirming the unlock. I call back to learn the rep had unlocked my 5s. So, the second rep initiated the unlock for the 4s. Now, I have both phones unlocked ;)

Same issue here. Frustrating. Looking now at my old emails, I didn't order my 4S until October 10th, 2011, so maybe they run the "contract" date all the way up to the end, even though I was "upgrade eligible" for the contract renewal pricing on the 5S.

Still no luck for me. I re-submitted another unlock request, being both well past the 14 days since getting my 5s, and 17 days after the full two years of having my 4S.

This is the email I get back:

We cannot complete your request for one of the following reasons:

If you are under contract you must complete the contract period before your device can be unlocked.
If you are a GoPhone customer, you must have 6 months of prepaid service.
If you paid full price for your AT&T device and are a postpaid customer you must have at least 60 days of service with AT&T.

I know I could just pay a few dollars to unlock elsewhere, but now this is bugging me. What number are people phoning to to get to someone at AT&T that can do the unlock?

Thanks,

John

have you ever had it replaced at the genius bar?

call AT&T and ask them why its not being unlocked

It's because of dumb AT&T crap like this that I've just went and paid for unlocks from 3rd-party services instead of messing with AT&T.

For my old iPhone 3GS, they gave me the run-around for months before they would unlock it. I eventually got them to do it one day, after 40+ minutes on the phone with them (mostly on-hold, listening to terrible music or automated messages or whatever it is that they play).

Ever since then, I've just gone to eBay or Chronic Unlocks and paid them.

1) iPhone 3GS - AT&T
2) iPhone 3GS - Chronic Unlocks
3) iPhone 4S - eBay
4) iPhone 5S - eBay
5) iPhone 5C - eBay

It's a shame unlocking is such a pain.

those prices have gone up now.. they average anywhere from $80 to $120. I think chronic is now charging $100 as of this post. look at this thread:

If you switch from tmobile with the iPhone 5 and 4s you currently have, your experience will suck on tmobile because the phones don't support tmobiles aws hspa+ bands which is its main 4g band because it's aws LTE and pcs hspa+ is not built out yet and sucks pretty bad. I would recommend selling those devices and buying phones that have aws hspa bands.

Wow. I'll definitely stick it out with AT&T then. By their rules, I should have been able to unlock for 4S 14 days after upgrading to my 5S. That was two weeks ago. I'll have to phone it in, I guess.

I have had two iPhones unlocked via att online chat. I explained to them that I can't afford to keep paying the outrageous bills and I broke my contract and got my iPhone unlocked. I also had my wife's iPhone 5 unlocked but I bought it full price so they had no reason not to. Both did it immediately while I was on chat with them. Restored through iTunes and both were unlocked.

you should try it...

If the device was bought Full Price and/or Contract Free then they'll make you wait 14 days after purchase. AT&T just doesn't want devices unlocked then returned etc... After 14 days you can go online, chat or over the phone.

How long ago did you try the chat option if you don't mind me asking? I haven't tried online chat but every time i call in they just keep on referring me to the online form over the phone.

I got the phones unlocked via online chat earlier this month. I have had many online chats with ATT over the past year or so. I have had to change my plan for various reasons and every time I did it via online chat. I have actually had a good experience with ATT customer service. Just be polite and patient because sometimes it seems like they may be helping multiple people at once, but if you are just patient and polite they seem to be very helpful.

when you say earlier this month what date? I understand that as of earlier this month everything in their policies have changed. I hope the white house petition comes through and all these firkin carriers unlock everything

This is not true.

I did my early upgrade this morning at 3AM (from 5 to 5s @ $450)

I submitted my old iPhone 5 for unlock at 10AM and AT&T confirmed the unlock 30 min later and said it would take up to 24 hours.

I checked later today on an IMEI checker online and it said it was now SIM unlocked.

I would try again as they did it for me.

I ended up getting $450 for my 16GB Black via buy it now on eBay tonight.

Do you have a link to an IMEI checker? Are there any risks with me keying this in?

I'm currently with Sprint and they told me my iPhone has been unlocked but I don't get that message in iTunes. I'm also switching to AT&T soon (with a different phone, I know my Sprint one won't work with AT&T) and I'm not real familiar with the unlocking process.

Sprint CDMA phones can only be unlocked for use overseas. As far as ATT unlocks they can be done to work with ANY GSM carrier local or international.

Those checks are ok however, they can be off sometimes.
Your sprint iPhone is unlocked to any carrier other than that here in the USA, if you had a SIM card from another country you'd get that message on iTunes after you restore.
If you buy a device only from apple without any subsidized prices etc... it'll be unlocked. If you buy an AT&T iPhone full price from a third party retailer like best buy, radio shack etc... They will unlock your device after 14 days no matter your contract status.

Maybe that's why I didn't get the message. That SIM inside was in my old 4S that was unlocked. Apple replaced it a few days ago.

So I should be good if Sprint told me it was unlocked?

Yes, everything in that phone transferred onto the replacement. Just sprint iPhones are all set up for that carrier here in the USA but is unlocked for other country SIM cards(that SIM card for sprint DONT lose it, it's the only way to activate that device in the USA.
