The US military is deployed throughout the globe, not just Afghanistan.

PCS is not deployment..... 2 different things but yes, there are US military members deployed in places other than Afghanistan.

Drooling over the gun, not the phone.
Civilians  It's not a gun.

That's nice they get that service, however, I hope they don't bring them out in the field. They could get located if they leave location tracking apps open. I hope DoD has some kind of policy in place for those soldiers.

You really don't know what you're talking about do you?

...AT&T is also quietly unlocking iPhones for U.S. service members still under contract with the carrier....

I give them credit for not jumping up and down, waving a flag about the fact they are doing this.

But, how many of them will know this information if AT&T have no official words regarding it? Unless they already read it on MacRumors :p

The military community is quite good at spreading the word. It would be hard to keep everyone from knowing. Military gossip is perhaps the most efficient form of communication known to humanity.

uhh why does ATT give service members special treatment? there are plenty of hardworking people here at home whose jobs are just as important as the soldiers. knowing that ATT can unlock in-contract phones at any time and not doing it for everyone is another reason they are a *****ty company.

Most people's jobs don't drag them halfway around the world on short notice for long periods of time.

When is the last time someone tried to kill you while you were doing your job and protecting the Constitution of the United States?

Because WE stepped up and put OUR life on the line so you could have the ability to complain. How about you sign on the dotted line and THEN you can comment. Until then how about you just thank active duty personnel and veterans and move on with your life.

Sorry but our wars of choice have nothing to do with defending the constitution. It is however the oath taken when joined so I guess you're partially correct.

Cool. There is someone with brains and a heart in the right place working at ATT.:)
Not sure about the heart . But it appears AT&T is starting to worry about their future. Keeping the customers happy goes a long way towards customer retention !!

I don't blame them - I personally am only with AT&T right now because their speeds are much faster than Verizon's. When an LTE iPhone comes out (which may be as soon as this fall), the speed difference will no longer be an issue. I definitely plan to switch then because of VZW's greater coverage. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one.

Under that rationale, law enforcement officers should also get early unlocks.

Sorry but not even the same. Most LEO's go home every night to their family. A US service memeber on a year long deployment gets no such luxury.

there are plenty of people that work as travelers in this country. what about travel nurses who work 13 week assignments away from their families? don't see ATT giving them any handouts?

a lot of deployed service members work away from the field of battle...please don't tell me every deployed service member is at risk of being killed every day....

cops and firefighters gave up their lives in attempt to save those who were trapped in the towers on 9/11. no unlocked cell phones for their families or other service members. you soldiers think you are protecting lives. how ironic that you are the ones carrying the guns and shooting people.

Nice of ATT to finally do something nice for soldiers after screwing them around for years. When they suspend military members phone service, as required by law, when they are deployed, they also refuse to give the soldier the same plan back that he had before he left. Instead, they are forced to pick a newer, usually more expensive plan. Also a good way to get people off the unlimited data. Don't believe the hype. ATT is anything but soldier friendly.

I didn't say anything about being away from family ... I bet all those people you mention are still covered by AT&T service. Service members are not. THAT is the difference.

Soldiers with iPhones? That's pretty cool. People at my school can't even keep their iPhone screens alive over a little camping trip.

There's no reason to be condescending. I respect the men (and women for that matter) who serve our country. But I also respect the men and women who put their lives at risk right here at home too - especially since they're under appreciated by people who have similar mentalities to you.

There are deep cover LEOs who have to be away from their families for similarly long periods.

Don't try to make this about service and sacrifice - because it isn't ... When Soldiers deploy, they no longer have AT&T service, but they have the phone and the contract, so now AT&T will unlock their phone, so they can drop in a host-nation SIM and use their phone.

If you are not in the service, and are required to travel OUTSIDE the country for long periods of time, call AT&T, they may unlock your phone too ...

so they get to choose their service now. great! like i said, there are plenty of people here that do jobs that are just as important as protecting the country that would like an unlocked phone, especially in contract. does that mean i have to risk my life and time away from family in order to get my phone unlocked? i never realized how cheap life was in america until now.

You still don't understand ... being in the service does not automatically qualify you for an unlock ... you must get orders to deploy (which means you are about to be out of the country (and AT&T's coverage are) for a very long time) to have your phone unlocked.

I was not responding to you. "DroidRules" clearly is making it about service and sacrifice.

And I really doubt AT&T will unlock non-military peoples' phones. They do give you the opportunity to terminate your service w/o ETF if you have to move though.

ok thank you for the explanation. that makes sense. however, i still think att should do this for everyone. plenty of people travel outside the us for various reasons and for extended periods of time. i don't feel like the soldiers life is more important than my own, so we should get equal treatment.

Wow! AT&T must be in a good mood this week! Maybe later this week they will announce that all phones will sold by them will be unlocked :D

I meant to quote him as well ...

AT&T will unlock iPhones that are out of contract so, in your case there, they should unlock it as well.

point is every service member is deployed ATLEAST once during their contract and its is for a very LONG time, which can go on and off for quite a few years, varying on your contract. While people here put there lives at risk, it doesn't compare to the military, not even close.

Police and firefighters aren't in a foreign country where everyone hates them and is trying to kill them... and contrary to popular belief, not every hates cops
