That is pretty funny, I'll forward your instructions to my Grandmother (I hope you can see the humor in that). I guess I should thank you for taking some time to provide this "workaround," but my point is that DirectTV Now is apparently wanting people to register before they will openly offer this basic information.

Maybe I should add that I found most of this information even before they opened up the official website, so my concern isn't from a lack of knowing how to search for such information. Again, I'm not complaining that you can't FIND this information (even somewhere on the DirectTV Now website), the issue is that DirectTV Now is apparently "fishing" for customer information.

The customer rep I contacted was very polite and understanding, but his first response was that I should register because they are offering such great deals. When I declined to do that he said said he was sorry but the only way to see the listings was to register. That's their "official" policy. I suspect that might change pretty quickly if more people would push back or complain and I already have done that, directly to DirectTV (sorry, I could resist).

You said:
Can't believe it. DirectTV Now requires you to create an account with your name and email address before they will even show you the channels that are available with the service. ...

They should list the plans, costs, and channels openly. Are they trying to hide something?

This is wrong.

If you now want to change it to "they make it harder than it should be," that's a completely different point.

Well, playing around with it with voiceover on apple tv, and not good. Too much modality - gotta swipe up, then over to guide, and once on the guide the focus is on the channel labels, which are announced with unhelpful "button," then you have to swipe to get to the actual programs....

I'm feeling similar to your experience.

Hopefully, the upcoming ATV software release will help with the navigation.

The Direct TV Now experiment is in the right direction and I'll get comfortable with it in the next 90 days.

The offer with a free ATV was welcomed as I was ready to buy another one.

I wonder what impact this will do for more people embracing the Apple TV?

So there is no way ever you are going to be able log in with you "normal" Directv subscription here... I would love to have access to an Directv app on Apple TV. There is only mobile IOS and android apps available now.

I decided to try the three month trial to lock in the price. I am going to give the Apple TV to my inlaws for Christmas because they want one, so it ends up being essentially a 3 month free trial for me. I will see how much I use it and like it over the next three months and decide if I want to keep it. I also want to hear more about the DVR capability in those three months. I am on contract with Verizon for another year sadly. I figure I will just pay extra for awhile and then phase out the cable once the termination fee begins to become more manageable and if the features are good enough to phase in. I may eventually end up switching to the comcast X1 internet only deal that gives basic channel packages just for the sports and DVR, but that worries me because they tend to throttle during peak hours.

I'm in the same boat; I currently have Xfinity & Verizon. Once they can fix the VOD to include past seasons and a sports package, I'll cut Xfinity and maybe switch over to AT&T.

I was able to walk into an AT&T corporate store and walk out with an Apple TV which was nice. The odd part is that all of the sign up process in store is literally they just go to the website and hand you the iPad and let you sign up. Once it is completed they just verify that you signed up and then they sell you the apple tv with a promo code that makes it free. It was really painless.

Unfortunately I was so busy after I got it yesterday that I haven't really had a chance to play with it much but I am hoping to get it all set up today after work and really see how it is going to fit into my home theater setup.

I signed up for three months to try it out and get an AppleTV 4 for the bedroom. It costs less to buy the 3 month package with AppleTV than buying AppleTV by itself. Also, it locked me in for $35, so I can see how it progresses. I also have AT&T for my iPhone, so that is a bonus.

In my area, I don't get any local channels with the service, which will by a problem. I may get a Tivo or something to record OTA if I stick with Directv Now.

I am not that concerned with the lack of DVR if they can hold onto programs for a week. That was a bit hit and miss out of the gate, though. I was able to get several of the past shows of one program, but I could not get anything from The Walking Dead on demand (you can find stuff using their search engine), so I have to see if that continues. I don't want to go back to the days of having to be in front of the TV when my favorite shows are on.

The guide needs some work, too. Last night, I was surfing through the guide and would see "College Basketball Game" or "NBA Game" without any information.

Anyway, I will use it alongside my regular Directv for the next few months and see how it goes. I can cancel if it doesn't get better. It is too bad they are not holding onto the $35 for 100 channels for a while, though. It really feels like a beta service right now.

Signed up yesterday to get the deal on the apple TV. I come from PS VUE which is awesome. I decided i no longer needed PSVUE because i was not watching live programming. Most shows i was watching the next day to the exception of TWD which i watch on same night (not live) and sports. I came to find out a short while ago that my former TV provider login still has my profile active to login to the network apps. I still have Internet with them but i disco the TV portion more than 6 months ago. Well anyways i came to find out about this when i was trying to watch TV via CBS app. Where i'm at CBS has a deal with my provider where i dont need to use all access as i can sign up to stream from my provider. It only works with Iphone CBS app but you CAN do mirror to apple TV. Once i saw that it was working i then found out that all the networks i watch had an apple TV application and that my login worked for them. Sport channels have a live TV option so im 100% set with that and rabbit ears for local channels. Anyways just wanted to share that nifty loop hope.. hope it works for yall. And yes i know one day they will clean up the provisioning on my account but until then....

back to DirectTVTnow.
Cons
  • Interface is not as good as PS VUE. Funky how you get to Favorites.. they should make that more prominent
  • of course no cloud DVR
  • Side by side comparison with Watch TNT website and watching TNT in DirectTVNow had watchTNT 2-3 minutes ahead of time. People that watch sports live dont want notifications coming in 2-3 minutes before it happens. I've seen pirated shows more close to live time than this
Pros
  • the web interface defaults the sound to off. For those of us that accidentally have the volume high it allows us to adjust it first. The IOS app does the exact same thing and i love it. Hope they dont take it away.
  • has allot more channels than PSVUE
  • cheaper than VUE

PS Vue is still the winner in this war.

Anybody know the settings for the app? I have unlimited data, so no issues. But my lady friend does not. In the references I see "Stream with Mobile Data." It's turned off right now by default. Which is the correct setting for the data to not count against your bucket of data? I can't find the answer anywhere online.

I wish I knew this too. I have AT&T prepaid phone plan and the data being used by DTV Now is showing up in my total use for the month. Maybe AT&T discounts that usage at the end of the month. Or maybe prepaid plans such as mine are not included in the zero rating exemption. My app is set to "stream with mobile data" which I assume would be required for it to even work, but I haven't experimented with the "off" setting yet.

I believe its only post paid accounts that are included. I just checked my ATT mobile useage and it shows data free tv-DVT NOW.

Thanks. I've been reading about DirecTV Now all over the web and none of the reviews, etc. say that prepaid plans are not included in zero rating. But I had wondered from the beginning because it always seems prepaid people are treated like second class citizens.

It appears to be postpaid only.

Under the heading -- "Streaming included for AT&T wireless customers"

Small print --
[...] 1DIRECTV NOW customers and select wireless customers only. Available only in the U.S. (excludes Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands). Streaming does not count against your data allotments. Exclusions: App download may incur data usage/charges. Advertisements and non-streaming app activity may incur data usage. Eligible Wireless: Requires postpaid data service on eligible device. [...]

Similar to the user below me, my account however shows "sponsored data." I assume that is the free data that isn't being counted against my unlimited. I assume based on that, if "Stream with mobile data" is turned off (by default mind you) then it's the zero rating. If you turn it on, it will then use your actual bucket of data, whatever that may be. But again this is a guess based on my plan.

Hmm, when I get a chance, I'll try it with the default "off" setting to see if it still works on cellular and if there's any difference in data usage. Thanks.

Got my issue fixed thank god. Sucks I had to go through my bank though..

So anybody else have any luck with going into an ATT Corporate store, signing up, and walking out with an Apple Tv same Day?? Thanks

Had no issue other than the crew that was almost non-existant. Store was a ghost town, 1 person working the floor. 1 standing at a terminal typing away ignoring me as i was #1 on their wait list board. But I did get my apple tv after a 20 minute wait.

Just got off the phone with AT&T. If you are using the AT&T/DTV bundle for unlimited data, and you drop DTV for DTVnow, you will lose your bundle and be required to pick a standard data plan. That sucks.

That it does, When I change apartments, I will be able to dump at&t internet by moving a 1/2 mile down the road. Cannot wait to get this done. They are as bad as Comcast for Quality of service, but fiber is oh so close :>
