That has been the pattern in the past, but with 3 devices now using the same OS Apple may be deciding to change things so that iPhone hardware is no longer tied to iOS updates, like the iPad and iPod touch are.

My bigger problem with all of these rumors is that there doesn't seem to be much the iPhone 5 will offer over the 4. Why the long delay if it's only trivial?

I tend to agree with you, if the rumors are true that the iPhone 5 (or whatever you want to call it) is only a minor upgrade, camera and processor, why won't it be released in June/July? Guess that's why they are rumors, something just doesn't add up.

I don't think Apple would release a new iPhone (iPhone 5) in June while still running iOS 4.x, and considering that a beta of iOS 5.0 won't be released until at or around WWDC, and I also don't think that Apple would release new iPhone hardware with a beta OS, all signs seem to point to no new iPhone hardware at WWDC.
My question is what the hell has Apple been doing for the last year if all we're going to get is a refresh in September?

Does it hurt to wait 4 months? I mean. is your iphone useless after 1 year?
I know its your money, but it really doesnt hurt to wait with a 1 year old phone a few more months...

I used a normal phone for 4 years, I bet you could survive...

Just wait until a the new iPhone come out, if the money is really burning a hole in your pocket and you just have to have a new phone. I personally went for 2 years without a contract on my AT&T account prior to getting the iPhone 4 in October, basically making do with a series of used Nokia flip phones and Go phones because I didn't like any of regular phone enough to be on contract for 2 years. Once my fiance (then girlfriend) convinced me to upgrade by paying for the phone (I still pay for the bill), I jump on board into the smart phone/iPhone world and haven't looked back. I like the phone enough that I probably won't upgrade unless her brother breaks his phone and needs a new one or she buys me another one.

Just curious...How is it that you can switch between that many devices in such a short period of time? Are you getting them unsubsidized, buying them used on ebay etc???

Haha, I get that a lot! All of the above really. I get my devices unsubsidized, from upgrades, from trades, from Craigslist. I sell a lot of stuff too :)

Maybe they've got something bigger planned? Like T-Mobile and Sprint support that required extra time. Maybe they don't believe they'll be able to get enough components for a new product that would have high demand (rumours say that they can't secure enough components now for the current iPhone)?

My upgrade with AT&T is the first week in June. Everyone seems to be saying that the new iPhone will come out in September. Also looks like it won't be a major update either. I might have to look into Android because I don't see a point in getting the iPhone 4 the phone will be a year old at that point.

Anyone else in this boat?

Yes definitely look into Android. You will get better hardware does not matter what phone you choose. Plus the bennefits of running a free open source OS.

Iphone 4 is underpowered and the os is propietary.

All the rumors are stating the next iPhone, the iPhone4S is not going to have 4G LTE capabilities, nor the NFC ability. So it'll have possibly better cameras, the A5 processor... Yeah, more of a bump of last year's model than a full revolution. All the speculation is you will have to wait till at least 2012 to see an LTE iPhone. So no 4G for you if you stick with the iPhone between now and then.

There are a number of different Android devices out there that run on 4G, whether that is HSPA+ on ATT, WiMax on Sprint, or LTE on Verizon. Just keep in mind that nearly everyone is going to an LTE standard within the next few years, not just the United States.

Android is a different beast than iOS. There is fragmentation, and every manufacturer seems to want to skin Android and put on their own widgets. Samsung has the TouchWiz, Motorola has Blur, and HTC has SenseUI... Sure you can get stock Android on most of these units by rooting at the like, but you are kissing your warranty goodbye. And despite what people say, they are not the same thing. When you pick up someone else's iPhone, you have a pretty good idea that it will function nearly the same as your iPhone, unless you did some modifications to the software. Pick up three different Android handsets from different makers, and ... yeah. You'll see. I don't really perceive that as a bad thing, options are always good. Just be aware there will be an acclimation period for any new operating system.

How do you know its going to be trivial by any means?

Based on the rumors so far, the update seems to be nothing more than an incremental one with the possibilities of a new camera, A5 chip, and perhaps more storage.

If that really is all that Apple is planning to do, then a September refresh would be quite disappointing to many 3gs users who didn't upgrade to the 4 (in my case because white only became available a few weeks ago).

Of course the rumors could be all wrong and the update could in fact be quite substantial, but my comments are based only on the rumors as they are now.
