I was told to add a line, then order the phone and my 3gs would keep its upgrade for future use. Is this correct or can I only get the upgrade price if I upgrade my current phone?

If you add a line it won't affect the eligibility of another line.

You guys do not have to call AT&T or anything. Simply just take the 2 phones pull out the SIM cards and literally just switch them between phones. It will all register on AT&T's network eventually. I have never had to contact them to swap SIMs.

The only reason you MIGHT have to contact them is to add a data package to your line if it doesn't already have one since the online account manager might not register that you have an iPhone yet.

I swear, it is as simple as physically swapping SIMs.

The phone I'm upgrading is a 3GS which has the larger sim card, I'm using the upgrade from a line which is eligible and has an iPhone 4 on it already.

Gah!

I just called AT&T back again and got someone else and explained the situation and they told me that if I ordered an iPhone 4S under my brother's number, got it in my hand and then called AT&T so they can re-program the SIM that my brother's iPhone 3G would automatically die.

Damnit. Do I need to keep calling them back until 1 rep knows what they're talking about?

Apparently so.

But my brother has an iPhone 3G so he would need a new SIM to use my current iPhone 4.

I just don't want to buy the phone on his line, then take my iPhone 4 SIM and put it into the iPhone 4S and when I connect it to iTunes, my brother's 3G stops working or something.

I know I am being annoying everyone but I keep hearing 1029239 different things, especially from AT&T reps.

I edited my post about the micro-SIM. :)

Have your brother drop by an AT&T store and ask for a micro-SIM. That way he can put the micro-SIM into your iP4. You just take your micro-SIM and stick it in the 4s and you should be good to go!

I totally understand your frustration. You can call multiple reps and you will more than likely get multiple different answers, I've never understood that.

So... what I'm gauging from all of this is... it's possible to call ATT and perform the upgrade completely over the phone?

But.. their rep lines are down at 3am.. :/

But from my past swap upgrades, they had to do the swap before I got the phone, whenever I did it in the store. I had to go in, and they had to go on the computer and perform the upgrade and then give me the phone to activate with my SIM. Something along those lines.

Thanks everyone!

I took all the information here and called a 3RD rep just now who was great. Basically, she confirmed the easiest method.

I get the phone ordered by the eligible line and call AT&T before I activate it so they can switch the lines. Then I am good. I don't need to switch SIM's this way.

That's it. The first rep scared the **** out of me. Lol.

So basically this is exactly how the macrumors upgrade guide says.

Yup. :(

I just wanted to be 110% sure incase a new policy or something was created this year as opposed to when that guide was written.

Can't be too careful, especially with a $400 device.

Adding line to a single account?

I have a single line with the grandfathered unlimited data plan, I'm trying to add a line and then buy the iPhone for the second line, and only pay the extra 9.99 per month......

Any idea if this is possible?

I'm planning on doing an upgrade swap as well. I currently have an iPhone 4 and I'm grandfathered into unlimited data and the 5 dollar texting plan (200 msgs). Will doing an upgrade swap affect my unlimited plan and my 5 dollar texting plan at all?

Also, the phone whose upgrade I'm stealing is a dumbphone with no data plan or anything. I will have to add a data plan so that I can order the 4S using that lines number. After they do the swap will everything on the dumbphone account go back to the way it was and everything that I have on my iPhone 4 stay in place?

After reading the comments in this thread it appears to be YES, but I just want to make sure.
