I'm just going to go ahead and say that T-Mobile is the way to go. I left AT&T after the whole sponsored data crap. I refuse to support any company that doesn't support an open internet. With that being said if you need to go with one of these guys I'd go with AT&T.

There's a thought. Is it possible to get the device on contract and just pay the ETF after a month has passed and go back to the $15 line fee?

$199 upfront cost

$325 ETF

$36 activation fee

$25 add'l charge for 1 month

-------------------------

$585

Yes. You can break you're contract and pay the etf.

I'm just going to go ahead and say that T-Mobile is the way to go.

Unfortunately T-Mobile just doesn't have the coverage that AT&T or Verizon offer. Where I live, T-Mobile barely gets voice or data coverage at my home or work. AT&T and Verizon have LTE.

Actually, what I'm curious about is what if you want to still keep service but pay the ETF?

Last time I looked into this they wouldn't let you. I wanted to pay my ETF to end my contract just so I could unlock my iPhone 4s for international use. I couldn't end my contract without canceling my service according to several AT&T reps I spoke with on the phone.

verizon costs a little more but they have better voice and indoor coverage

This really depends on where you live.

My last job provided a Verizon phone. I had to stand by my window to get a signal.
I'm in the St. Louis area, so it's not like I'm in the middle of nowhere.

AT&T has the best coverage and now pricing where I'm at (I get 5 bars at home).
I was considering switching to T-Mobile, due to cheaper costs. Their high-frequencies (1700/1900/2100) are just terrible where I work (NO in-door coverage).

Since AT&T has dropped subsidies, my monthly bill is as cheap as it would have been with T-Mobile, but I get to keep my coverage!

Which is why I said if you have to go with these two guys I'd go with AT&T. They're speeds are fast and their voice calls sound better than Verizon. The minute you get coverage in your neighborhood is say leave.

I pay $70 for unlimited everything. I was getting discounts like crazy from AT&T with unlimted call and texts with 5GB data and paid $91. That was a lot of retention discounts. How is AT&T cheaper in anyway?

Yes T-Mobile can be a good choice - if you have good coverage where you need it. I switched from VZW to ATT (best choice for me) because TMob did not have good coverage at my home. ATT was the best signal inside the home; VZW and TM had no signal inside.

T-Mobile has a fantastic offer in their tablet data plans. You can get a TMob SIM card and sign up for a FREE data plan for a tablet with 200 MB/month. When you need more data (when traveling, for example), you can just sign up for more data when you need it. TMobile's data plans are great - good choices and low prices. Your needs for a table are different from those for a phone. For a tablet, you would obviously use WiFi at home - you really don't need cellular signal. If you are traveling to a city or built-up area, you would probably find good signal with TMobile.

I had AT&T, Verizon and Tmobile. I think Verizon was the worst of the 3. I have lived in NYC, Boston and in CT. I went from Verizon to AT&T and now T-Mboblie.

I saved like 20-30 bucks for switching from Verizon to T-moblie. I left because of the price, everyone I knew had AT&T so I could do a low minute plan. Verizon had a bunch of dead zones in my area in CT and in Boston. So I was able to leave w/o paying a fee.

AT&T is awesome in my area but being able to save 45 bucks a month gave me a reason to switch. T-Moblie isn't that bad. Defiantly not as good as AT&T but its not like the data is slower(I don't notice it) and there are a couple of places where the service is a bit more spotty.

The thing that is annoying is people take comments personally like you are insulting their kids or something. All 3 have their weaknesses and their pros. Also didn't like that Verizon phones don't work abroad and you can't use text and data at the same time.

Glad you have better coverage while saving money. Forgetting about SVD which IMO is overrated the verizon 5s is unlocked and will work every where.

In Verizons defense I had them 5 years ago so they could have potentially gotten better. I remember having Verizon for 4 years during High school and my girlfriend at the time had Cingular which I believe became AT&T and she couldn't get a signal unless she went to a window and stuck her head outside. People are making T-Mobile sound that ******.

Then had AT&T till like 2 months ago. I don't really see much of a difference but then again I am in major Cities. In NYC all 3 services suck tho. When my job make we go somewhere its usually a big city as well. I just think its funny how everyone bashes the company they don't use. The differences between them is pretty minimal.

You answered a different question than I asked. Clearly lower manhattan and the tunnels, where I used to work presents special challenges. And no matter what cell service is very dependent on the square inch of land you are on.

Having said all that while I frequent the big cities I frequent the great out of doors also. So I like verizon at least I have cell service in the middle of nowhere.

I have service with AT&T (postpaid), Verizon (prepaid) and T-Mobile (prepaid, mostly for trial) so I'm an equal opportunity basher. :p

There are holes in each carrier's service. For me, AT&T is good 95% of the time, Verizon 97% while T-Mobile is just 60-70% in the places where I need service.
