AT&T will NOT grandfather in my 200MB plan.

OP it sounds like you have a definitive answer. I migrated three phones to a business account last year. I'm not upgrading any of them to the iPhone 5 so I didn't run into this issue. However, next time the sales guy rolls around I'll bring this up.

It's a small office with 6 mobile phones.

Two AT&T stores, management included, won't let me keep the 200MB plan. It's 3GB or nothing.

The AT&T small business support for our account (Premiere account, "enterprise", multiple marketing terms the have used in reference to it) also say 3GB only.

The AT&T lady on phone support said I could migrate the account to being billed in my own name (Individual/personal) and upgrade to the 300MB account. An extra $120 a year, but not bad. Just a major hassle for billing and management of the account, and still twice the data I actually need.

An unlocked phone would cost $350 more, but save $180/year every year after the break even point...for many years to come, but now I know this is not an option since the iPhone 4 sim won't fit the iPhone 5.

It boils down to these massive corporations expecting everyone to give them $1000 a year, regardless of the quality or quantity of service rendered. AT&T makes even Comcast look good.

----------

I also forgot to repeat for those who missed it, the Apple Store online won't allow an order stating:
"Account type not supported."
"We're sorry. The AT&T account you have is a business account. Please contact your company's telecom manager or AT&T account manager to complete your iPhone purchase."

Why not buy the unlocked phone and go to an AT&T store and buy a nano SIM for $20? Nano SIM is a standard SIM card that more than just Apple is going to use, so they can't just change your account due to you buying a SIM card.

The other thing you can do is just DIY convert the Micro SIM to Nano SIM:
http://www.idownloadblog.com/2012/09/14/convert-micro-sim-iphone-5-compatible-nano-sim/

There are other options out there as well, but I don't see a reason not to just buy unlocked and get another SIM/Convert your current SIM.

Very creative! That route also leaves the phone open to ditching AT&T at any time (if T-Mobile is any less abusive).

It sounds like poster is using a business account... anyone know if AT&T treats those differently?

I know I for one didn't even have a choice of switching plans when I bought my 5, it was my current (unlimited) plan and that was it.

(I ordered through Apple.com).

Yes, they do. I have a FAN account through my university, and the only data plan options I have for the iPhone are the 2GB/5GB options, and they are listed as 'Enterprise data plan' and each cost $15 more than the equivalent personal data plans.

AT&T did not require me to change my data plan in order to get the FAN discount, so I am still on the 4GB+tethering plan, but if I were to switch away from it, I can't get it or the 300mb plan back.

I just upgraded my phone to a 5 and also kept the current data plan, so in that case, my account is different from the OPs, but I wouldn't be surprised if true, full on business (or small business) accounts have different choices and different forced options when upgrading.

If at first (2nd, 3rd...) you don't succeed...

I'm on the phone now with a different business division rep. Although she says she can't let me keep the 200MB plan, she says she can get me the 300MB plan that is $5/month more. This is good news if nothing goes wrong. She says she'll have to adjust the plan on setup. She also says she sees other business accounts who have already been tweaked to get 300MB plans despite the 3GB plan "requirement". Thanks to many of you for your suggestions! :)

When it arrives (2-weeks likely) I call "key contacts" to activate it and refer to todays date for the notes. The moment I activate it, she will apply any tweaks if needed to get the 300MB plan attached.

I am so rarely outside of Wi-fi that I don't need the extra 100MB, but I don't have lobbyists or any power in the matter. I can't stand the principal of forced charges and eliminating smaller packages just to milk us, but this minimal up-charge should at least get me through two more years.

Brutus - Apologies I have not read the entire thread however while I was on the phone with AT&T they were able to do a Premier upgrade keeping my existing 200Mb plan. Not sure if it helps or not - just a FYI.

Update

So, I got the phone. I activated the phone. Guess what? The AT&T support lady on the other end of my call took a few minutes and had seemingly no trouble keeping the 200MB/month plan for the iPhone 5 on our small business account. Sure would have saved me some calls, commutes, hours to have known this from day 1, but all is well that ends well (sort of).
Thank you to the posters who gave me the tenacity to keep asking! :)

I hope I have as good as luck as YOU Brutusfly! I have a small business plan as well with 5 phones on the plan and they auto-changed me to the 300MB plan without saying anything. I just called customer service at 800-331-0500. The rep said that option is no longer available for the iPhone5 and he had to create a support request to see if it can be manually added back on. I won't know the resolution for a projected 2 weeks. Frustrating! By chance, what number did you call for support if you have record of that?

Thanks for posting your experience in this thread: it gave me a place to start at least to know others have had success reversing the change!

I haven't upgraded to iphone5 yet but we did some changes a couple months ago and I just got notice that I went over my 200MB plan. One of those changes was supposed to be putting me on a 300MB plan.

Anyone know what is the price difference?

$15 a month and $20 a month.

Thanks--that's not bad. I rarely use Internet on my phone as I can all day at work on a PC and when I get home on a PC but somehow went over my 200MB. AT&T was going to charge me $15 for another 200mb for going over, but I called and they ended up being cool about it and since it was first time I went over They waived it!

Sorry, I deleted my notes that had the number in it. It was probably the typical number for our small business.
I almost told them I'd take the 300MB to get a bit of headroom, but for the same $10 two months of 300MB would cost I could exceed my 200MB by 1GB every-other month.

I have a FAN account through my work and I get all their regular plans. I can update through Apple too and everything works fine. It's exactly the same as regular, except I get 19% off and when I call customer service, they pick up immediately since it's a separate customer service line.

Nope. With an iPhone 5 I can't get anything less than the 3GB plan according to 3-different AT&T associates (one of them the manager).

Then they're lying to you to upsell you. I'm on a 300mb iPhone 5 plan for $20 a month... though I'm going to upgrade to 3gb cause I have a FAN account and it's only 24 dollars (4 more dollars for those who are math deficient) for a crapload more data... need to get a full time job first... I am so sick of temping. :(

At&t... we'll nickel and dime you until you threaten to leave us. Then we'll give you an incentive to sign another contract so we can do it all again. :p

19%? What an odd number. We've got 20%, mom works for Macy's.

Buy iPhone 5 off contract.
Cut current SIM Card.
**** AT&T.

You wouldn't even need to cut the SIM. You should be able to go in and just get a new SIM free of charge at an ATT Store. I've done it many times going from Standard Sim to MICRO sim and back to Standard SIM from switching phones the past year. Never been charged for anything once. Less they are doing something shady with the Nano-Sims since they are new.

That's the issue. They will not let him continue his current contract if he upgrades to the nanosim for the iPhone 5. If he does this clandestinely then he can continue on the contract with the iPhone 5.

I have a business premier account. See the below on how I upgraded the 300MB plan to 3GB for free:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/1462444/

 I use less than 150MB a month. AT&T insists I pay for 20-times that or I can't upgrade from iPhone 4. Crappy service for double the price. Twice today I was told I could keep the plan, only to be rejected later. These greedy mega-corps keep eliminating the lower plans! Trickle up economics!

I would wait and buy unlocked, but I can't even use my old micro-sim, right?

My question (and I'm sure a lot of others are wondering if it hasn't already been asked in the thread) is, why would you want to buy literally the most expensive and sought after smartphone in the WORLD and use less than 150mb of data a month?

Let that sit for a while.

Here's what you can do with the new iPhone:
Voice Navigated driving directions
Videochat
Netflix
Pandora
Email
Games (that require data)
Facebook
Weather
Banking
Shopping (Amazon, eBay, Newegg, etc)
News
Web
Google Earth
Movie apps
Youtube
Airline apps

And you want to pay $200 minimum, not including tax, so you can use < 150mb of data a month?

you CRAZZZZZZZZZZZY!

Why not just get a dumbphone? or keep you iphone 4 (still a very nice phone) and buy the new ipod touch! That way you will have a new multimedia device but won't be paying carrier contract prices.

That's the issue. They will not let him continue his current contract if he upgrades to the nanosim for the iPhone 5. If he does this clandestinely then he can continue on the contract with the iPhone 5.

I would only think that would happen if he upgraded. If he paid full price for the phone, AT&T doesn't count it as a contract extension and just a new phone on the line, which you can do. If you take the subsidy, that's a different question since to take the subsidy, you have to play by their game. If he is currently under contract, brings in a new phone unlocked unsubsidized weather it be an iPhone 5 or a GSIII and needs a SIM, they will give you a new SIM for your same plan as is since you sign a contract for the service, not the phone. If you are out of contract, then the games up, they don't have to do anything. In fact, if they wanted, they could terminate your line and tell you to go elsewhere since it's non-contract.

No, I'm not CRAZZZZY. I use many gigabytes a month. But....

I have this invisible field I'm blanketed in nearly everywhere I go. It's at work, it's at home, it's at the home stores, the office supply stores, some of my favorite restaurants...
It's called... Wi-Fi. My wife even lets me tether to her iPad using this mysterious, invisible, wall penetrating field! :p

Your best option is to look online at your account; you can still lose your old data-plan. CS agents can always let you keep the old one when you upgrade, but sometimes their system will eventually override it. I've noticed it can automatically grandfather in your old data plan put an expiration date on it a month or two out and then forcibly convert it to a LTE approved data plan. If your data plan does not have a expiration date on it you are probably fine.

Most work wifi's are either blocked or severely restricted. No office supply store near me has free wifi and i live in the Chicago suburbs. No restaurant I have visited in the last 6 months has free wifi (in suburbs or city of Chicago). And yeah, I used to have it at home until I stopped getting bent over by Comcast for $55/mo.

Using network data whenever you want > hoping you are at a wifi bubble (or "mysterious, invisible, wall penetrating field")

And the Verizon network gives me fast data EVERYWHERE near chicago. Of course if you live in a non-4g market you must use your primitive wifi bubbles :)

Me and my wife have a shared minute plan but individual data plans.

She has 200mb and we had no problem with the upgrade to iphone 5s

She works from home so has wifi all day she never uses her data plan. I'm sure there are people out there like her..
